S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Whhhatttt??!! You guys don't think it's that great?! o_Oo_O Man, you all expectin' too high, lol. Gotta realize that TV programs do have budgets and do not always expect it to be as high quality/a lot of actions compare to movies (like The Avengers). And I'm not surprise. I knew it's always like that many years ago. However, I predict that this show, S.H.I.E.L.D., will continue to grow into a bigger universe and possible see some of members being involved in The Avengers II/III.

<---HUGE fan of Marvel characters. Probably explains why I love SHIELD. :)

Yup, it'll continue to get better. People seem to forget just how terrible a lot of popular show pilots were I guess. So yeah, it will just get better and better, especially once Joss is done with Avengers 2 and can come back to working on SHIELD full time (as he alluded to in his EW interview).

I'm a fan of Marvel characters as well, but just not much for the characters in this movie/show.

You don't need a huge budget to have a quality show, just competent writers and actors. The 1st episode was a bit boring if I'm totally honest.

Like what ? cause I'm thinking back on shows like Dexter, Breaking bad, Lost, Fringe, Sons of anarchy, Justified and they all had very good pilots. Even shows like Nikita, or to keep it more up to date. Blacklist had a pretty good pilot.

My expectations weren't even all that high, but for me the acting isn't there. They tried to hard for it to be funny. The effects were tolerable. The writing seemed wishy washy. The characters thus far seem very dull. I hope it grows and gets better but that was not a very good pilot, and great shows often have decent pilots.

I'm having a mix feeling toward this statement. Half of me agreed with it; other half disagreed. I think it's all about who you know (the writers) and your favorite actors/actresses, perhaps? Suppose there are couple of your favorite people being on a show with some poor writers, would you willing to watch it? The same can be said the other way around (poor actors/actresses with excellent writers). Although budgets do play a role to some degree, writers and who's playing on the screen are also important as well. I love Joss as a writer/director and I love the casts in SHIELD. This is one of the reason I've enjoyed watching it.

I do realize as well that not every show can please everyone for number of reasons and that's understandable. I just thought SHIELD did an excellent job last night and probably will continue to get better within the next few shows. It gives me a bigger perspective, in Marvel's World, about who are the workers at SHIELD and how they react/response toward super heroes/villains.

I love marvel and comic book stuff, I just think the production value was lacking..and will unfortunately lead the show into cancellation within a year.

I didn't love it either, but I'll probably keep watching for a few weeks to decide.

Much better than the atrocious Sleepy Hollow many of you were hyping though.

Well, if anyone was expecting tons of Avengers and other Marvel references, they will be supremely disappointed. This just feels like some sort of cops and robbers show set in the Marvel universe.

Was only the first episode and Joss Whedon's shows usually get better and better. I found it fast paced and enjoyed all the characters. Some of you mentioned "Arrow". I love "Arrow" but initially had only watched the first three or four episodes and thought it was a little bit flat, stopped watching it for awhile and finally went back and watched the rest and it got really, really interesting and good.

Heres hoping, but Joss Whedon's really good shows tend to get cancelled after a season or two :(

Oh, the flying car at the end was absolutely cringe worthy.

I've never read any Marvel comics but I got the impression that "Lola" is a collectible car from the origins of SHIELD (I believe they started in comics back in the late 60's). So in keeping with the lore of SHIELD it fits.

In issue #2-3 of Wolverine (5th series), Nick Fury rode a flying car that is similar to Phil's Lola a few months ago. :)

It's a reference to the first Captain America film where Howard Stark unveils it at the Stark Expo. Doesn't make it any less stupid. "Roads? where we're going we don't need roads". Ugh

Except you're wrong. The car in CA wasn't a corvette and it used maglevs, not jet engines.

I'm going to have to side with Smurfboy and say it's fan service for the old SHIELD comics.

I mean this show takes place in a universe where a billionaire has a metal suit that allows him to fly and destroy tanks and so forth, a god that can fly thanks to a magical hammer and a mild mannered scientist that turns into a 10 foot 800 pound green monster.

But a flying car is silly?

O.K....

There have been plenty of flying cars used by Shield over the years in the comics. I tied it to the Captain America movie because that's were most people would recognize the reference from. I'm not going to get into the semantics of what make and model it is due to there being a long list of various models used as flying cars by Shield. Doesn't make it any less stupid and down right corny for this tv show.

So if it's part of the established lore then how does it make it corny in this show?

Because what works in comics doesn't necessarily translate well to television. In this case, flying cars are f*cking stupid.

But a piece of alien tech in the shape of a centipede that when planted on a human arm to make them incredibly strong, amplified with a drug that makes people glow red and explode is fine. I agree, the car was cheesy. But this is a television show set in the same cinematic universe where a guy from Asgard flies about with a hammer and there's a guy who turns into a giant green rage monster. It's a Marvel TV show about a world full of super heroes and alien technology, you have to suspend your sense of disbelief when watching this stuff. It was also only the first episode, which traditionally have never been great in any TV show.
