Sony’s Bungie Layoffs Because Game Delays

And soon Sony will buy a new gaming developer for x $billions... it'll be an experience watching absolutely no critical media attention to this.

I can't help but think Bungie was a victim of its own success. They had this grand vision for Destiny, which many thought would never get off the ground (and it almost didn't).

The reality is, Destiny 2 was falling off due to a weak DLC combined with the perfect storm of a great gaming 2023. The past couple of years, D2 was my game because there wasn't enough to fill that space. This year? My playtime was way down this year before all this, and the numbers back up the same for most.

I think Sony jumped on the money train a day late and a dollar short, and they are at a series that was already ending. Now, there's no Destiny 3 on the horizon. You know they want that big Destiny live service money, but that's not going to last forever.

Sony buying them was an attempt to counter Bethesda and it may backfire big time.

I tried D1/D2 a few times could never get into them for long. Was a cool concept just not that fun to play for long.

Only tried the first and checked out very quickly. Remember the whole Peter Dinklage Voice Work drama.

It took years for Destiny 1 to be fun (and the story was always a hot mess). Then D2 launched and it was in an even worse state.

D1 took off with Taken King and later Rise of Iron.

I mean, the story ending of D1 is still a meme. "I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain".

Anyway, I think this is where Sony miscalculated. MS buys Activision and gets COD, which goes through ups and downs, but is a no-brainer money printer at the end of the day. Destiny on the other hand has had major ups and downs. When people stop playing, revenue plummets. Unlike COD, there's no new Destiny on the horizon. Just a live service that probably is at the end of its peak. I think the game will still exist for some time, but not like it was.

There blows the whistle

Today will be interesting. Thursdays is their weekly blog about what's going on with Destiny.

There's still been no official communications on any of this stuff. Do they stay silent and let everyone blow up? Or do they speak out and let everyone blow up anyway?

Bungie's update is super short, and doesn't even mention the Final Shape delay. Their website still says Feb 2024, which is really not a good look at all. They hint at the delay, but don't even say it.
