Sony’s Bungie Layoffs Because Game Delays

Not really Sony's fault on this one,

Internally, really no one is blaming Sony for this, even management. Some employees were told that if the Sony buyout did not happen, that with current Destiny 2 performance the studio itself would have been in jeopardy if they were still independent.

Also remember that Sony GAVE Bungie 1.2 billion in employee retention when they were acquired. This is squarely on Bungie management.

The Bungie Final Shape product page still says Feb 2024. They've known about the delay for some time and they still won't even update the date? Even just make it a generic 2024 or something?

That's just gross.

This is the reminder that the company you work for is not your family or friend.

Maybe they fired the person who does the updates?

Was never going to live up to the hype but they dropped the ball big time with Destiny.

Bungie died a long time a go. Pretty much as soon as they split from Xbox they died. While Destiny may have been popular and a financial success it has never lived up to the Bungie name.

But that 30 seconds of fun combat loop?

I think Destiny (and every other game like it) was doomed from the start. The idea of providing people with regular seasonal content, plus major yearly DLCs was just not sustainable. I mean, Bungie hired a bunch of people, and ultimately, Destiny had a couple of good seasons and a bunch of "meh" ones.

In modern gaming, you need to keep the content rolling, all while providing bug fixes and quality of life updates.

While I still think we'll see things like games with battle passes and "seasons", I don't think we'll ever see a true live service game again. Diablo 4 still seems to be trying, although I think even they've pushed back and realized that keeping people playing 1 game 24/7 isn't going to work. They've actually sped up leveling a ton and made it a realistic grind, rather than trying to keep people "stuck". Season 1 was stupid long, while season 2 is a very "casual" grind. I'm making easy progress while still mixing in other games.

Thanks to Destiny I always laugh when I hear a game has a 5+ year plan.

Destiny 2 is one of the worst games ever at being welcoming to new players or returning players. Its never really clear what quests you can do let alone what you are supposed to do

The game really lost any kind of point after awhile. They used to raise the power cap, but that stopped mostly along the way. Basically, you played a season, progressed some tiny story, and unlocked some gear. You'd run into power caps for stuff anyway, so even leveling up rarely mattered as everything just scaled anyway.

There was no overall point to any of it. Diablo 4 has players get to level 100, farm gear, and go kill some endgame bosses. The endgame isn't amazing, but what to do is pretty obvious. Destiny lacks any point like that.

It wasn't just new players, there was really no real progression. I've played since day 1 and I couldn't even tell you what the real thing to do was other than keep the story moving.

It is less about adding content and more about having good quality content that is fun.

You also need a progression system and loot system that people want to partake in. Most people don't mind grinding a piece of content if the reward is worth it, Like Fatebring was.

Like seriously, didn't Sony just buy Bungie?

They just released a press release for the new season and mention Final Shape still coming end of Feb. So, either their PR team didn't fix it (most likely) or there was no delay (or they were considering and changed their minds).

Bungie just officially announced the Final Shape delay. New date is June 4th.

Really scummy thing to do to wait before the new season.

Will destiny continue on as WOW has or will it go on until the next big thing?
Well they are changing the seasons to something else(most likely less content) and I don't think there will be any more expansions. So, it doesn't seem like it will be supported all that much.
