Sony: How to fumble a launch

I don't think ps4 was selling on games, hype of power and better ports. Nintendo 64, that is a good example of people buying a system for a game.

I know the games will be there, just hope they are less scripted this time.

X1 had a marginally stronger exclusive launch line up.
Both consoles exclusives were outshone by 3rd parties.
PS4 has a lower price that for many, outweighed Ryse and Forza.

I wouldn't call it a fumbled launch as much as a satisfactory one.

Not every launch can have a Halo or Mario 64, and the days of first party games destroying 3rd parties in quality are a memory.

me thinks you playing the wrong 1st party games

Both consoles sort of disappointed me with their launch. Sure I really enjoyed Killzone, and would have picked up Forza 5 had I gotten an X1 at launch, but otherwise meh. My thoughts on other games; PS4 has Knack but I'm waiting for a price drop, just like I would have waited for Ryse price drop on the X1. As for 3rd party titles, most of them I just don't care for anymore (AC) or would have purchased on PC (BF4). That said, the games will be coming. So while the PS4 has been better at collecting dust since the end of December, Infamous will be coming out next month and then soon MLB 14. After that the launch will be a distant memory and the great games will start showing up regularly.

Damn, the PS4 has turned into the original Wii in Viktor's house! Dat Wii U though. Mmm.

If Sony would have had a port of the last of us at launch, that would have been amazing. Oh well.

But Sony launches are always like this. They use the good will that they have built up over the years since their systems usually live up to their potential.

But I agree. With all the studios Sony has, there should have been more at launch. I think in their rush to market, they simply catered to the indies to fill the void. But even that is a slow build to this point.

Microsoft had to have the games at launch since the last couple of years have been bone dry. Their trick is to keep delivering them. Especially now that the X1 won't be the lead platform for third party games.

I agree with you somewhat. I would buy Knack and Killzone had I owned a PS4. I feel Driveclub getting delayed was a major blow but it should be a much better now it's got more time in development. Sony's major issue was focusing a lot on the PS3 in 2013, some of the games like GT6 and Beyond should have been moved to PS4. GT6's sales haven't been great and that's cause no one in Europe is seeking PS3 games now, we're all saving up for PS4's or waiting for more games. The other issue for me was keeping the Japanese devs whose output is dismal and getting rid of Sony Liverpool and Incognito; surely they would of had a PS4 game in development? I just think they should have moved devs onto PS4 quicker. Did we need God of War Ascension? No get that team on PS4 development. The development transition could have been managed better by Sony's first party and I'm sure Sony would agree in hindsight.

imo every console launch since Dreamcast has looked puny in comparison. Need to consider there is fewer studios and much longer development time compared to generations past.

That list is depressing. -_-

Infamous - sweet
The Order - sweet
Drive Club - I don't care
Carmageddon - lol
Planetside 2 - I could play it on pc right now if I gave a damn
MLB 14 - lol baseball

I am sad faced. The only 2 awesome games on that list don't even have multiplayer. qq

Looks like summer will be slow... unless Watch Dogs comes out then.

Yeah, summers are always a bit down when it comes to game releases. Still I figure of few of those '2014' titles are gonna land, like Drive Club and probably Diablo III, as well as a few Indies. Also, my list if far from complete.

Didn't a rep from Sony say recently that there are over 100 games scheduled to come out for the PS4 in 2014? I know a lot of those will be small indie games but I think if we have over 100 choices in a year we'll all likely be able to find more than a couple things that we like.

That list doesn't do much for me either. I should be looking forward to games like Murdered: Soul Suspect and The Evil Within but I don't like horror stuff. I really wish Destiny was coming out sooner. I'm looking forward to that and I guess Watch Dogs.

Infamous - Yawn
The Order - Yawn
Drive Club - Awesome
carmagedden - Never heard of it?
Planetside 2 - Yawn
MLB 14 - Awesome

First post pretty much nails it.

Plenty of games for a launch and plenty more just around the corner. I've still not had enough time to play Contrast or either of the FtP titles. Or finish trophy hunting in Resogun.

Can't please everyone with every genre of game.

I bet you loved Ryse though huh.

Yeah Kvally. How dare you not show any interest in Sony exclusives that you don't have any interest in.

Only Hissatsu is allowed to do that.

For the record, I enjoyed Ryse. Pretty decent launch game.

I just find it funny that he has zero interest in the 2 high profile 3rd person action games coming out this year on ps4 but I know he likes Ryse. Ryse is one of my favorite games and I love the 3rd person action genre so of course I'm interested in infamous and The Order. I figure anyone who is into 3rd person action games would at least give them a try.

Maybe he couldn't get into the first two games? The Order could be great or mediocre. SP game with no online or co op. A lot of questions about that game still.

I'm looking forward to the Order and InFamous if that helps.

I've never even played the other infamous games as I never had a ps3. I still debate wether or not I should get a ps3 but it's hard to justify when I just spent 500 for an xb1 and 400 for a ps4. As for The Order, I dislike the setting but I'm willing to put that aside and give it a try. Not like there is much else to choose from! lol

PSP and Vita both had great launch software

also, I don't know about Infamous 2, but I liked Infamous 1 for its more focused parts inside the open world. That is why I liked the game so much and I think maybe Infamous 2 was missing that? if so, I'd assume part 3 is missing that as well..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't understand how creating the fastest selling console in the history of all video games is a fumble.

Because, I said the software was a fumble. "I don't know how a team in a sport can have a fumble when they are winning 400 to 0". Come on guys, a fumble means just that, you make a mistake or create a mistake on something. Yes, sony won the game but they did havea fumble.

MS obviously fumbled their pre launch and has been recovering from that one for quite a while. The problem is that sony had everything in their favor and they fumbled the one part they were trying to focus on. And, maybe they are focusing on that fumble, they just didn't plan for launch as good as they should. When you are working on something you should always have back up plans for when things go wrong.

Sony's original plans for launch were solid, yes. Those plans didn't work out and they didn't really have any solid back up plans. It seems their original plan was to have Order in march, infamous and drive club for 2013 titles. That would make sense and is a great plan, but they didn't have any back up plans for when those games had the chance of not meeting their expected dates. Everything has been pushed back 6 months to a year.

This is the likely situation in my eyes.

It's not bad for games to be pushed back that aren't ready, but again... this is where sony should have had games that were certain to hit launch date in the pipeline (games we already named) last of us port, etc

The same could have been said about Ryse, pre-release. Somehow I feel that if I had the gumption to search his posts I'd see a lot of positive, dare I say "fanboyish" hype being posted by the poster in question.

As for the topic at hand. I didn't read much but I did catch mention of no RPG's and I'm not being defensive of the PS4 here, but I'd honestly like to know.

Has any console ever launched with a good RPG? I'd be willing to bet handhelds may have, but consoles?

Not that I know of. Although I'm surprised MS didn't plan Fable Anniversary for the X1. They really should have in my opinion. Dare I say, make it exclusive to the X1 as a matter of fact. I'm also a bit surprised that Square Enix didn't try to get Sony or MS support for Lightning Returns on either console.

I would say actual launch day was decent really. I would give some of you that, but December, Jan. and Feb. have not been that great. It seems they purposely didn't release anything for those dates, but I can't imagine why it would be a bad idea to release a big game a month after launch when people are really looking for a big new game.

PS3 is a much better option as of today than PS4/ONE/Wii U combined honestly. WIth some of the Japanese games hitting this year especially.
