Thanks guys. Going to try some more tonight.

So...is it OK that I killed the merchant in Undead Burg...by accident? I was able to get pass the demon, so I'm not too worried about fire bombs. Let me know if this was a huge mistake, because I could probably re-roll this without losing too much time.

Yeah, I'm thinking of re-rolling. Really didn't mean to do it and he has some beneficial things that I could really use this early. No big deal.

If you re-roll it should only take you about 45 minutes to get back there now that you know the ropes. If you do accidentally end up hitting a merchant or NPC in the future - try to run away without killing them. There's a character you meet after defeating the gargoyles that will reset their behavior.

I was wondering about that. I tried to rest at the bonfire in hopes it would chill him out, but that didn't work. This was a good tutorial for me.

Never practice your sword swings in front of a merchant.

Grimmy, every person you talk to can be killed by you. Remember this. To actually gather every item in the game, it is actually best to slay them all eventually. You should have gotten the Uchigatana from that Merchant. No need to restart, that is a great weapon to use.

If you do restart, try the Knight (for armor, and I think he starts with a broad sword, tower shield and knight armor). That could be the skeleton for your Paladin.

Or, use this as your blanket playthrough (where you learn everything) and then your next toon you can do a more 'complete' run. I know you may be thinking "My next playthrough?!".. believe me. You think you will just play once and then once the game makes complete sense to you, you will want to play again.

It also depends on how you play the game - some people are completionists, some are min-maxers, others roleplay. I don't kill any merchants because I tend to role-play myself in games, even if it means missing out on key items. Another strategy is to wait until just before the final boss, then kill any npc's who may carry unique items so you can bring them into new game + (where all the npcs will be revived).

Been plugging away and finally had the nerve to go after Havel. However, he fell off the cliff and I lost the ring. :(

Hmm, in some cases you can reload or go back, and the items will be near the cliff where the guy fell off. However, I don't know what the rules are for this or how often it works.

If you lose Havel's Ring, well it sucks. If you like wearing heavy armor, that's an awesome ring. And there are a lot of heavy armors in the game.

Finished the game on Level 1 today which was a goal of mine before DkS2 comes out.

Positives
+Beating the game on level 1
+Using weapons i rarely give a second thought to normally- Light crossbow i used a ton, Hand Ax is much better than i thought. Re-enforced club i used alot too. I used battle axes early until i tried the hand ax.

Neutral
I ended up using NPCs for S&O, and Gwyn (was ready to finish the game at that point). I thought only using NPCs for two fights wasn't bad.

The Four Kings took me quite a few deaths to beat. Gwyn and the Centipede were the other two that took some tries. Otherwise it was a bit easier than i thought it would be. Granted i have beaten this game 30-40 times so nothing was a surprise but the lack of character leveling and using some different weapons.

Negatives
-I didn't do the DLC, i didn't think i could get by Manus on level 1.
-When i did try to summon a real player no one was around. Older game and being level 1 i am sure its not the most popular combination for seeking summons.

I was a bit bummed last night and stopped playing. Feel better this morning. I've convinced myself, I can speed run back to where I was. Going to restart once more.

The ring isn't that big of a deal to start over if thats why you're doing that. Although if you're still really early in the game, like Undead burg, than you can get back to that place very fast.

Hey Grimmy,

I enjoy reading about your experiences in DS. Please keep us posted. Man you've got me wanting to play again.

Congrats Krause on the level 1 play through! Holy crap that sounds hard.

Cheat! Lol, just kidding. The O&S fight is not one of my favorites. There are camera and lock on issues, not to mention that you can get screwed by their random patterns.

I didn't have much trouble with Gwyn though. He was a pushover compared to King Allant from Demon's Souls. I had to go full hyper mode and not take a hit to beat him...

I didn't do the dlc at level 1 either. It seemed like it would be very difficult due to the aggressiveness of the bosses.

Now you can do a sl1 Demon's Souls run!

I always kill smog first and then trap ornstein behind a pillar. He is so stupid.

Really? In Hyper mode what weapon were you equipped with? I didn't do a crit build my first playthrough, but on the second and third, it took about 7-9 shots to drop him with my Sticky Bow.

Who is playing the Dark Souls 2 beta tonight?

Well, being level 1 limited my weapon selection. Here is what I used.

dragon long sword +5 (two handed due to lack of strength...)
clever rat's ring (for hyper mode)
morion blade, off hand (for hyper mode)
soul ray (for interrupting his area blast)

It was tricky two-handing a weapon and switching to a catalyst quickly when needed. I also had to get good at dodging since any hit would kill me outright or with second chance it would ruin hyper mode, so I didn't use second chance.

That was it. My other weapon was a magic weapon. Maybe the crescent falchion? I can't remember. I posted my full equipment when I did my Demon's Souls soul level 1 run in either this thread or back in the Dark Souls thread at TXB.

I got into it. Overall i enjoyed it quite a bit.

Raniok,

I did not beta test to answer your question. I watched a few minutes of someone on twitch streaming their time in the game.

Does anyone know if From Software has said anything about giving the players the ability to send game invites to friends?

It was fun, I am looking forward to the agility attribute.

I wonder if that will be a bit overpowered as it seemed really effective. I will admit i dumped a fair amount of points into it. I guess until we can try all the combinations it will be hard to say for sure. Did you try jumping? I had the hardest time regardless if i set it at L3 or O.

I'm not talking about Level 1 playthrough.

Oh, well in that case he's not that difficult. At least not when you get the hang of him. I would still consider Allant more of a challenge than Gwyn though who can be parried and punished too easily.

I cheated the first time I beat Gwyn. I used one of those rock formations in his boss room so he got caught up against it and every time he swung his sword, it would arc over my head. lolololol

They haven't said anything nor was that option apparent in the game. I think it is still the same style of invites but maybe they created a more dynamic backend? I saw so many summon signs, now I don't know if that has to do with people wanting to coop to test the Network or if they have changed the way matchmaking works.

I had not tried jumping. My friend said that he had the same issue (it wasn't very responsive) jumping. I was busy reading the menus and dragging mobs (11-2am beta test.. bah I have sleep to do lol). I did try a few classes to see the new weapon animations and how items have changed.

I wonder if they added the Agility attribute to get rid of the flip ring. Or maybe they'll add a multitude of rings that change your evasion. My favorite classes are light armored based with curved weapons and bows. Even pumping only 8 points into Agility, I saw a noticeable difference as you said with my evasion, item use and shield readying. This is going to be a fantastic revision to the Souls Saga.

I agree with Allant being more of a challenge. I do think his fight is slower paced compared to that spastic fool that Gwyn is. Not only can you parry Gwyn quite easily, but he can be stun locked with Great Combustion. What a joker haha. Damnit, now I want to play Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. hahaha

That isn't cheating. From has always designed their games with ways to trick the AI and make it your bish. As I said above, I trap Ornstein behind a pillar and just plink away with arrows as he desperately swings his lance around.

I thought I'd share the news that Havel died last night and I'm now sporting his ring. It really wasn't that big of a deal starting over.

Yeah, I think I started over as well. On my first playthrough I cheezed havel by having him chase me off the stairs a few times. The falling damage with all his armor ended up killing him after 3 or 4 drops. On my second character it was just backstab city.

I still cheesed him but did it through the door below the tower.

I hope everyone is doing great! I haven't been here in a while. It is great to see everyone still playing Dark Souls. I haven't played in a while. I am currently playing Marvel Heroes and World of Warcraft. This will sound very weird and stupid to most people -- even though I am excited for Dark Souls 2, I am so utterly attached to Dark Souls 1's world and bosses that I am having a tough time getting too excited if you know what I mean. I am not ready to leave Dark Souls 1 behind :( I am a moron...i know.
