The Interviews Of Phil Spencer - To P3 And Beyond

100%

Unless he is playing the long game that I don't see, he needs to get the stepping. I like the older guys when they were more aggressive. None of this plays nice with others. Like the ABK deal, he should just say f*** it and give nothing away. Look what SONY did to them on this deal, Do you see them playing nice?
Long game? lol.

He only got funding like 4 years ago.

seriously people.

Yes. Nobody disputes you need good games. Not Phil, not I.

How can Phil be great for XBox one minute and after a lackluster release, people are asking for a resignation? It's a poorly received title. Move on. I stopped following politic stuff because it was exhausting listening to complaint after complaint. Now it seem to bleed over into my games. Just the constant bitching and moaning is so tiring.

Because everybody ignores what has been done.

And Phil caves in and does these interviews when this happens. One of my favorite parts of the interview is when he mentioned that 2023 started with a well received first party game, Hi-Fi Rush, as well as another well received (but less talked about) Age of Empires 2 for Xbox....which has garnered even more players than Hi-Fi Rush. Minecraft Legends as a 7, and charted very well. Then they get a title that is rated a 6, and now Xbox is closing shop. The fact that first party wise, Forza Motorsport 8 (after a 6 or 7 year hiatus), Starfield, Age of Empires 4 have yet to still release this year. That is 6 first party games this year, compared to 1 in 2022 with Pentiment.

I don't think he should go but there should be some heat. Its not really just one title when people have been waiting years for them to get it together.

They are really going to have a lot riding on Starfield.

Takes years to make games.

Why do people put that much stake in what a corporate executive says about the product to video game fanatics during an interview? Yes, Spencer is a nice guy. He's not going to go over the numbers and inside corporate discussions with some self-important video game dudes.

Probably the fact it was also heavily marketed played into that. Hifi rush was a stealth drop that turned out to be surprisingly good and Age of Empires 2 DE was a port of a 2019 PC game with a niche audience. This is the first next gen only Xbox first party that seems to cater more to the general gaming population with hype behind it due to the higher expectations of an already one year delay.

The game missed internal goals as per Phil so they know it is not up to par. Next step now is to patch things up and hope for a recovery or move on to the next which would be Starfield / Forza .

Doesn't matter if it was on Windows PC (MS said their platform is PC and Xbox) first in 2019. It's first party, and Phil says it's doing really well, with more players than Hi-Fi Rush. 3 million players in Minecraft Legends already as well.

Redfall could have been awesome if they had made it single player only and narrative focused. They could have stuck with VoidEngine or CryEngine and really made something special.

I assume the drawings for the cutscenes was their art direction choice. Which is fine. But I would have preferred it to be acted out. I assume not hiring actors, and modeling all these characters saved them a boat load of money. Maybe make it a $39.99 game? It says 12.5 hours for the main story to beat according to the website.

You weren't listening. Since Sony and Nintendo are so synonymous with hardware, Xbox won't be able to make a dent in specifically the hardware space against them. This is precisely why they went the subscription route and are playing to their strengths now.

As he mentioned, no one's going to sell their PS5 for Starfield, no matter how good it is. He's right!
I didn't say that they would sell more than Sony or Nintendo though just that great games would sell more hardware which is a fact. Give people good content and they will buy your product, you don't have to be number one I've been saying that for years here (so have many others) you can be successful and not have to be number one. The number one stuff is just for console war fodder, as long as you are making a significant amount more than you are spending things should be good.

People who buy an xbox would be far more likely to spend money on that ecosystem than someone who is just subscribing through PC or playing through the cloud on their tv. They are also more likely to stay with the service long term as long as the content pipeline is consistent which I think even the most hardcore xbox fan would have to admit it hasn't been so far.

Without high quality day one games being released on a fairly regular basis GP just becomes a glorified back catalogue rental service. Releasing games on time is hard, everyone has delays at some point but the fact that they've had so few AAA first party games released since 1st party games releasing day one on GP became a thing about 5 years ago is bad.

Why would anyone expect them to sell their PS5 though? it would just get more people to buy his product even if it is as a secondary console, I don't think anyone other than fanboys on twitter have been saying people were going to dump their PS5's for Series X.

Most people are not multi console owners though.

my problem is how Bethesda didn't catch this or decide to ignore it. Phil is to blame but that is because he is a target. The developers who let this game go should get the heat and be put on the spot.

Buggy games shouldn't be a thing especially on console where they have set specs but for some reason they are becoming more and more frequent. It's unfortunate but just about everyone including Sony and MS (both should be held to a higher standard) have been letting games go before they were ready this gen and it needs to stop.

It is funny reading this and seeing the bleeders of blue totally ignore reality.

Lets look at Nintendo: Once a huge player, were still putting out consistent quality titles, but couldn't out console Playstation. Even the new Xbox console matched Nintendo. What did Nintendo do, they stopped trying to out console and started trying new things and went from 25 million units sold to 100+ million units sold.

The whole, console has set hardware so bugs shouldn't be acceptable, which is hilarious, totally ignores that Xbox isn't just the console, it is PC too.

And just for some perspective: Xbox has released more quality games from their studios this gen than any previous gen after 3 years. Only 2 games thus far have been poor out of something like 16 games. In 2021 Xbox was the best publisher with the highest aggregate critic score ever.

So yeah, things are looking better, brighter, and moving in the direction.

I think Phil is amazing. He manages to be the only non-politician that manages to keep performing badly year after year & still keep his job.

On a serious note. It's bogus how someone in this position thinks studios you bought should develop games how they want (obviously not include games they are already in development).

You need to set the sales, financial goals, timeframe, & criteria for games you expected from them. And they can think about & propose to you what they are developing, & negotiate the terms. You do not let them do whatever F they want. That defeats the purpose of buying a studio.

If you want creative freedom, stay independent.

On the flip side. Why buy studios if you expect them to change ways as soon as you bought them. You bought them for being them in the first place.

They definitely can if the game's mass appeal is large enough and the game is really good. If Starfield gets a 9+ rating you bet Xbox will gain more in console sales, game sales and Gamepass subs.

They might still be third but if you make a few more of these games at that scale, suddenly the whole picture will shift.
