The Interviews Of Phil Spencer - To P3 And Beyond

They definitely can if the game's mass appeal is large enough and the game is really good. If Starfield gets a 9+ rating you bet Xbox will gain more in console sales, game sales and Gamepass subs.

They might still be third but if you make a few more of these games at that scale, suddenly the whole picture will shift.
He said buy the Xbox and sell their PS5. He’s not talking about selling more systems, he’s talking about changing your primary ecosystem when you already have a huge digital library on PlayStation..

Not to mention most only buy 1 system.

Plus, the economy issues.

That doesn't matter to me. If I see great games on another system, I will go on that other platform to play it. I won't stay on one platform just to avoid playing amazing games on others. That mindset just doesn't make sense to me.

So you would give up years worth of a digital content and subscriptions for a game on a different console?

Huge doubt.

You don't have to give up to go on another platform. Many people have gaming PCs already or multiple consoles. We read about it all the time where people main one console and get another as a side piece whether that be a XSS or a Switch or a PS5 digital. It's all intertwined these days. As long as the platform has enough of the games you want to play, the gamers will come.

But that was the question he was asked and he said gamers aren't going to LEAVE PS for Xbox no matter how many games they release.

Those days are gone and Spencer is 100% right. This isn't like the early gens when everyone's catalogue started from scratch.

He's not right about the games IMO. As a major gaming console competitor, if it's not all about having amazing and great games then what are you even focusing on? Are you a fan of the money they make ? Their business ledger ?

If MS had what Sony had and put them all on Gamepass, it will definitely change the console share and market share.

This guy nails it.

No one who has10 odd years worth of investment is going to just straight up give that up.
It's not just the games now days it's the services that come with those consoles as well.

You don't have to give anything up. Why is it always so extreme that you either have one or the other? That's the old expiring mindset of 2 generations ago. Many people explore other platforms as long as the games are there.

It has ALWAYS been about the games. Always. Everything else is second tier.

Not really, some people just invest in games they may be familiar with and stick to it because simplicity and comfort….like I’m sure that’s a big number for the switch population. My brother and my partner only have that cos it’s what they grew up with, granted my partner grew up in the same land, shoot near their hq too lol

That’s kinda the reason why I only have an iPhone, iPad and Mac, and the cross-compatibility of apps like clip studio, adobe, etc.

Most gamers are casual gamers. They aren't like us.

Most don't....and it is even harder to sway them now we have digital libraries.

You are trying to over simply things.

Hell, I'm a hardcore gamer. I spend a stupid amount of time a year playing games. I knew coming into this gen that PS5 would have the best games at launch and yet I still got an XSS first, know why?

Wasn't because it was cheaper or easier to find. It was because 1.) I had hundreds of digital games on Xbox (PS4 I used discs mostly) and 2.)Xbox is where my friends are.

If you buy both systems you aren’t making huge gains in market share. His point was that to really catch up people would have to choose Xbox over PlayStation, which won’t happen.

That is why Xbox One did the most damage of them all. Once the PS4 got its storefront gathered, it was pretty much done. The only thing Microsoft can do is keep doing this for Xbox and Windows, hoping they can catch the new generation of gamers.

Sony just wants to make sure that the Content won't leave PS that is why they are fighting against this merger.

Xbox needs to leave that nice guy crap out and be very aggressive and tell people "Oh well" if want to play that game get an Xbox.

I have friends that are PC main gamers and have a switch to supplement, no PS or Xbox and they bought into the Gamepass because I convinced them to and also because they had the MP games we wanted to play together like Back 4 Blood (was fun for a run through once) , Halo Infinite coop (delay but here finally) and Redfall (haven't had a chance to play together yet). That's as simple as it is really.

Most gamers are casual gamers. They aren't like us.

Most really care about the games and if their friends are on it and want to play on that platform, they will join them.

1) you can use your PS4 discs in the PS5 (disc version) but I guess you wanted all digital only?

2) This is a big part of it. And how did you and all of your friends get into the Xbox ecosystem in the first place? Let me guess, it was a game that you all wanted to play together. And it was most likely an exclusive ?

But you are gaining. It's not going to be an overnight thing. It will take a generation or two but if you keep pumping out one great exclusive after another, you will reap the rewards whether that be financially or through market share. Everytime someone buys an Xbox console, you are gaining. And how do you entice someone to buy one? Great exclusive games that they cannot find anywhere else. Same reason why Sony and Nintendo have been so successful, their first party brings game experiences you cannot find on other platforms.

Why do people put that much stake in what a corporate executive says about the product to video game fanatics during an interview? Yes, Spencer is a nice guy. He's not going to go over the numbers and inside corporate discussions with some self-important video game dudes.
Like anything else with a face that people see as the face some side with, like sports, other entertainment, eating out, politics or other stuff….. that and I don’t think he’s allowed to talk numbers, and if he did most would go over others head so he have to make or use analogies or like “explain it to me if I were a five year old”

On the flip side. Why buy studios if you expect them to change ways as soon as you bought them. You bought them for being them in the first place.
I know this sounds obvious, but they likely bought them for content more than anything else, with a subscription service as your main model you need to a constant flow of new content to keep it viable. MS is too hands off, in a way that's a good thing because you don't want suits interfering with creative but at the same time you need to get stuff out on time and someone needs to crack the whip.

1.) Don't keep discs. Very few do.

2.) And again, you over simplify. Back then we didn't have a huge collection of games. This isn't the 90's .

You can over simplify all you want but it doesn't change how the complexity of the consumer has grown over the last decade.

Casual gamers wont on mass forgo their library just because a game is hyped up, hype they wont even see. Even hardcore gamers are less likely to...especially in an era where the worlds economy is fragile at best.

The complexity of the consumer is not so complicated. If you have enough good games, gamers will come. I can't stress that enough. If a long time owner of PlayStation sees so many great exclusives they are missing out on, they will buy a XSS, XSX or PC to play them.

Like me. I started with Super Nintendo because of Mario and Zelda. Went to PS1 for Final Fantasy 7 and whole bunch of burned discs back then. Skipped the PS2/Xbox era, because I had my PC. Owned the PS3 first because of familiarity of owning first PlayStation. Got the 360 after seeing their great exclusives like Gears, Halo, Condemned, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, PGR . Got the PS4 first, didn't like Kinect so no X1. Exclusives were good on the PS4 throughout the gen because Sony learned from their PS3 mistakes. Finally got an X1 because at the time, I was pretty maxed out on Destiny in PS4 so my friends community there (WRECKnation, iAM, Math Class, BombSquadKittens) persuaded me to get the X1 to regrind everything and play there.

Now for this gen, PS5 only because Destiny moved to PC which is where I excelled more than console in terms of aiming and the PVP scene. So far nothing from Xbox is persuading me to get the XSX but that doesn't mean there won't be. If Starfield is good enough, other games are good enough I might just bite.

TLDR, the games and the friends/community are what will make me buy the console. Everything else is secondary. Which is why the great exclusives or games comment didn't make sense to me. As a gamer, if it's not the games that attract you first and foremost then I don't know what else is supposed to. Friends can but there has to be games you are interested in first and foremost.

You just don't listen. THE MAJORITY ARE NOT LIKE US!!!

Your last paragraph also ignored the obvious: Playstation and Nintendo will both still have great games. So using your logic, the majority are going to own 3 consoles. That just isn't happening.

It doesn't make sense to you because you keep thinking of it and addressing it out of context.

What investment do people have in xbox if they go through game pass for all of their games? they can just give that up any time since they don't "own" any of it.

He's right that they'll never outsell PlayStation globally but that doesn't mean that a constant flow of great games won't increase xbox's market share. It's a false dichotomy, they can still be successful in the gaming space without outselling PlayStation or whatever Nintendo's next console is.

That whole line about people not selling their PS5's was just dumb, you don't have to sell a PS5 to get a Series X, not everyone can afford to buy both consoles at the same time but over time they may want to buy an xbox as well if you give them enough reason to.

Is there proof to show otherwise? I think more and more gamers are multiplatform these days. Just going by what I see and read around.

Heck, do a poll right in this very forum. I bet there are a lot more multiplatform owners than you think.

Found a NPD Analysis that over half of US gamers are multiplatform back in 2018

Ownership of multiple game consoles is up too. The share of all players ages 13 to 74 who play console games is about the same in 2021 as in 2019—36 percent vs. 33 percent—however, the density of ownership is considerably higher. Hub found that in 2019, just a quarter of console gamers owned both a PlayStation and an Xbox but in 2020, more than a third of respondents said they own both.

Edit: found a better study

Detailed PC & console gamer demographic and persona analysis: In the last six months, two out of three gamers played on a PC or console and 72% of PC and/or console players used at least two platforms. The market also became more equitable in 2022, with women gamers accounting for 40% of the total PC and console player base.

You just posted my proof. Thanks.

And again, for the sixth f***ing time: People on this forum are not representative of the masses.

More context.

Look at the next few years for Xbox and this is only what we know about. Dont worry about the stated release frames.

Name a generation where Xbox had more games coming in a two 'n' a half year span? This doesn't even include a Gears of War, or Halo, or STALKER 2, and there are at minimum another 6 games to be announced.

This is what I mean about Phil's work being on the cusp of fruition.
