The Xbox Onesie

I don't know where else to put this.

Apparently ReCore, the game attached to the CGI trailer where the dog blows himself up to protect his female owner in that desert cave, has been in development for 14 months. It's scheduled to come out Q1 2016. That's not even two years of development time.

It also looks like a pretty small team is developing it. Armature Studios is a 30 man studio.

Something is extremely fishy about this game. It's either not coming out when they said it would, or it's going to be a fairly standard, small scale game that doesn't require a ton of guesswork.

This stinks.

I hope not man. cause i read in this Reddit post

That it's going to be an action-adventure. This project should be given some time to develop. Really don't believe Spring 2016 is going to happen and that is fine.

Doubt it but would be cool especially if it worked better than they did on the 360.

Just to let you know only some original Xbox games work on the 360. I highly doubt MS will do it but it would be awesome though.

If they gave me a way to play Ninja Gaiden Black and Chaos Theory, I'd be all over that. Didn't they have direct downloads of original Xbox games on the 360?

Maybe we should wait till the first gameplay is shown before we start panicking, eh?

Honestly not seeing all the supposed "excitement" over this game. If anything many have said they are intrigued by it.

Maybe we should let people feel the way they want to feel about a game?

Hmmm, just found out that Cup Head and that awesome looking indie game Ashen are forever exclusives.

If you guys haven seen Ashen yet, well.... get on it!

So, I haven't seen a ton of power and gap discussions out of E3. Which is nice. From what we've seen at E3 though, how is the XB1 holding up to it's promises. Game wise it's obvious that MS is hitting it's stride this year, which makes sense being it's third season. The line up is impressive. The indie games are there. So a lot of the 1st year negatives have been addressed.

I haven't heard a lot about the cloud this year and it's effect on the games. I'm sure it's still in use, just not as big of a focus this year?? I'm sure they wanted to focus on the games, since they have ton and there is less of a need to play defense this year. I was just wondering how it was advancing.

Graphically do you think are we seeing the level that MS promised they could hit? Not really interested in a comparison, more is the XB1 hitting the mark MS claimed.

Pretty sure Halo 5 uses the Cloud for its Warzone A.I. There big cloud game seems to be Crackdown, so I expect to hear more about that at Gamescom.

As for graphics and living up to promises, I think that will be next year. I think once DX12 hits late this year you might see the collaboration of Cloud & DX12 having a significant impact on first party titles.

Found this interesting: Xbox One version of next MGS to be 1080p @60fps. BOOM!! (not that I care. No plans to purchase this title...)

Xbox One doesn't do 1080p, fact.

Microsoft - Power of the cloud (but don't tell anyone) - GameOnDaily

Just when you thought it was safe to discuss the weather

Microsoft’s E3 conference was pretty good, wasn’t it? Some big games to look forward to this year and beyond, with the usual suspects leading the charge (Halo, Gears, Forza), supplemented by some well established 3rd party IPs like Tomb Raiderand new properties like Rare’s pirate thing. All topped off with the announcement of Backward Compatibility. Now watch that conference again, and count how many times Phil Spencer and co referenced “The Cloud”. Don’t actually watch it again, because I can just tell you that the answer is “zero”. In fact I think the team may even deliberately avoid words that rhyme with “cloud“, just in case someone weak of hearing thinks they heard the word and starts a riot.

Well he has more charisma than Don Mattrick

This isn’t a big E3 revelation, and I am sure a lot of you have already picked up on the fact that Microsoft totally dropped “cloud” from the PR vocabulary at around about the time Phil Spencer took charge. Thanks to the disastrous early marketing pitch from Don Mattrick and the team making absurd promises about multiplying the power of every home console and enabling telekinesis, plus the general public loathing they garnered for their always-online plans, “Power of the cloud” became a laughing stock and the memes are not hard to find. These days Microsoft’s PR team go out of their way to avoid the term and downplay the significance of the feature, with only occasional references to “dedicated servers”, or attributing features to the more nebulous “Xbox Live”.

it is common knowledge that PR talk rarely aligns with reality

“We definitely never said the cloud would make your console 3x more powerful”

As PR goes, Microsoft have done well to help us forget all about the cloud and concentrate on the games. However, it is common knowledge that PR talk rarely aligns with reality. Let’s take a look at some Microsoft announcements to see if the Xbox One really has been set on a new path, or if the forecast is still cloudy:

Microsoft’s flagship title is a prime candidate for “power of the cloud!” banners, even if they won’t admit it.

Spot the cloud. That’s right, it is hosting the game!

Microsoft kicked off the conference with a grand unveiling of Halo 5’s multiplayer “Warzone” mode. 2 teams of spartans facing off against each other on maps far larger than we’ve seen before, populated with AI minions and bosses. Every multiplayer game, Warzone or otherwise, takes place on dedicated servers. Clearly Microsoft’s flagship title is a prime candidate for “power of the cloud!” banners, even if they won’t admit it.

Looks like my Drivatard at work

Next up is Forza 6. Drivatars make their return, and the races feature 24players. It’s relatively simplistic in terms of remote hosting and data crunching, but Microsoft were certainly happy to attribute Forza 5’s Drivatars to “big data” enabled by the cloud. Again, not a peep about it this time.

I am not convinced that the player working the rigging here can really be enjoying the game.

Rare’s ambitious looking swashbucklingadventure Sea of Thieves is a wide open online multiplayer experience, and it certainly doesn’t smell like a peer-to-peer setup. In fact it looks like a prime example of the kind of experience Microsoft used to promise at every opportunity when they first unveiled the Xbox One.

it certainly doesn’t smell like a peer-to-peer setup

Even Backward Compatibility offered some opportunity to talk up the relevance of the cloud as the new binary code for our Xbox 360 games is downloaded to the console. Downloading might not be the most extravagant use a server has ever seen, but you can bet if “cloud” was fashionable it would have been touted.

Cortana lives on, thanks to the power of the cloud

Now you may be reading this and thinking “yeah big deal, all of those things can be achieved on any dedicated server”. I am not trying to convince you of anything different. Seriously, I am not trying to sway anyone’s opinion on Microsoft or their precious cloud. I just want to discuss their behaviour and the industry in general. Look at Sony‘s own conference for the sake of contrast: Final Fantasy VII, Shenmue 3, Horizon, The Last Guardian, The Uncharted Collection, Uncharted 4. These titles carry a distinctly single player flavour. Sure, Uncharted 4 and maybe Horizon will feature some mode of multiplayer gameplay, but leveraging Playstation Network doesn’t seem to be the focus.

Maybe single player games are much more your thing

But when Sony talk about the Cloud everyone thinks it’s great! Hypocrites!

Maybe that is one key reason you favour Sony’s conference over Microsoft’s. Maybe single player games are much more your thing. Still, I find it really interesting to observe that Microsoft are still plugging away with Azure, and have themselves a tangible opportunity to distinguish their offerings from their direct competitor, yet they will not speak a word of it. They must consider the damage done by Don Mattrick’s campaign to be too heavy and too negative to risk a repeat performance.

What do you think of Microsoft’s descreet cloud behavour?

Crackdown. I’m all out of comments.

Gamescom is right around the corner, and we are expecting to see more of Crackdown at the show. That is a game that fans have already pinned as the grand showcase for the cloud, the game that will deliver on all of those initial big promises with destruction on a level never before experienced. Not even Phil Spencer’s silver tongue can convince people to forget it so I look forward to seeing if he maintains his intent to dance around using the word. I love a good lynching, so I will have my pitchfork at the ready in the hope he slips up.

That's kind of sad actually. It was obvious the were talking about absolutely nothing but games. I'd love to know how many times the word was spoken in the presentation. I would have liked to see more Win10 on X1 info in their presentation. It was clear they were avoiding words like TV, Kinect, etc. They even seemed to want little to do with the super popular multiplats.

I am not getting my hopes up, especially when there's no confirmation from Kojima so far on it. Actually i am just gonna assume it will be like Ground Zeroes and while i do not like it one bit that games are still gonna be 720p nowadays, some games, it's not the end of the world. That's not to say this news wouldn't be awesome if true though.

Getting past the smoke and mirrors, what this E3 did was reveal that MS is entering their prime as a publisher and platform. They have never had this good a handle on console gaming. Their 1st and 2nd party exclusives are diverse. Nice variety between big and small games. Nice variety between single and multiplayer. XBL is going next gen and doing stuff that's never been done before. Their controller is going next gen with the Elite. Their UI is going next gen. Preview program and Mods are significant additions to the ecosystem. Rare is back. This is the best implementation and most beneficial backwards compatibility on any console ever. I don't see gaps between this Fall and Winter of 2016.

Best of all, this all starts between soon and now. Don't have to wait 18 months to 2 years to see if they can deliver on the hype and exclusives. It's a contrast to the competition.
