I think we're really doing ourselves a disservice by not examining girlfriends (or boyfriends or cucumberfriends) as a service. Well, not that I could do much with that what with being married and all, but here I am looking out for you.
Sasquatch, if you don't get the point of the question, then I'll just move on. You are stating what I think is the obvious -- that games with SP and MP will appeal to more people than games with just one of those modes. I think we can file that one under "no kidding."
Some people love cucumbers. I mean really love them.I think we're really doing ourselves a disservice by not examining girlfriends (or boyfriends or cucumberfriends) as a service. Well, not that I could do much with that what with being married and all, but here I am looking out for you.
Well of course it's obvious, so why such sudden outrage? Why is this now a problem a month before E3? I can guess....
When Apple shipped the Iphone with a camera, GPS and MP3/4 player, I don't think Samsung, Google and Blackberry (lol) engineers sat around saying "God damn, that Iphone sold a s*** load, how can we make our phones better to counter the popularity of such a multifaceted device with unparalelled functionality" when the easiest answer is just to add cameras, GPS and media players.
The easiest way for campaigns to survive is simply add multiplayer...or make 150 hour campaigns.
Yup, GAF might have a lot of flaws but one thing they're good for is news, understanding trends, and tangible evidence. Not much multiplayer talk at all over there. Halo and Gears threads dry up quickly while the more story based game threads carry on. Hell, even here i tried to keep the Gears 4 thread alive with a post every now and then but to no avail.
Apparently nobody at Union even plays Gears, but are quick to defend that multiplayer is king. If you don't even care about your console's flagship game then who are you trying to fool? I don't know though, the people that play multiplayer don't post on forums because most of them are casual gamers anyway. Pick up and play a few rounds of Call of Duty or Battlefield.
SP as awesome as it is, GTA 5 has sold in the top 5 for YEARS. And I guarantee that's because of the MP and user generated content along with a consistent level of Developer support and updates. Halo 5 is the same way.Ouch!
I guess you could argue the SP portion of GTA is a big factor in its success. I realize MP is huge, but GTA wouldn't be GTA without its SP. Would SP be a big factor in Madden, NBA, and FIFA? I don't play enough sports games to know how many people play them SP.
Sasquatch, if you don't get the point of the question, then I'll just move on. You are stating what I think is the obvious -- that games with SP and MP will appeal to more people than games with just one of those modes. I think we can file that one under "no kidding."
Anyhow, to return to the question (what moves more units/revenue, MP or SP), here's how I'd break out that chart:
MP-only: Overwatch
MP-dominant:
Call of Duty- Infinite Warfare
Battlefield 1
Call of Duty- Black Ops
50/50:
NBA 2K
Madden
GTA V
FIFA 17
The Division (?)
SP-dominant: (none)
SP-only: Final Fantasy 15
So, as a crude sort of generalization, it looks like MP moves more unit/revenue than SP, although it's not as unbalanced as it looked initially. There are a lot of games that are about 50/50. But still, the overall list is skewed toward the MP component (based mostly on CoDs and Battlefield).
Yeah, that's from the same interview if I recall. Again, it's people seeing what they want to see. That sentence should make it abundantly clear, and yet...Pretty self explanatory:
"As an industry, I want to make sure both narrative-driven single-player games and service-based games have the opportunity to succeed. I think that’s critical for us.”
Doesn't get any more clear cut than that.
That is great news, and exactly what gamers have wanted to hear. Add to that, they want to make even greater investments in first party, as well as their new SP ip's that they have debuted. I love that they have put more resources into creating, developing and researching single player games on top of multiplayer. If you look at the success they have had with Ori, Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, Recore and Quantum Break, there is a clear vision in Phil's head about the importance of single player and game services. He has even stated numerous times that he is a single player gamer, and that is his passion that he wants to bring to Xbox. He loves that Sony has done well in that arena, and can see the justification for some of those ips.
So with MS focusing on Single Player as well as Games as a service and multiplayer, I think that should continue to keep the Xbox brand successful. It really is too bad that you have a select number of people in the world selectively read interviews and taking words out of context to create drama and hits.
Phil has made a lot of promises in the past 3 years, and I love that he is delivering on them.
Well of course it's obvious, so why such sudden outrage? Why is this now a problem a month before E3? I can guess.....
Eh, any bone to pick at this point.
The hardware argument doesn't exist anymore, so it HAD to shift to something else. After the DF spec expositions there were literally game sites complaining about "Who really needs a console this strong when all we want to do is just play games?" I mean this was something that we all here accurately predicted more than a month ago. The New Narrative Is Games. So the need to double down on the number of exclusives MS lacks becomes the new vehicle for driving critical overview against the Xbox One.
Soooo big surprise. Right?

Was it? Or was it "the difference isn't so big that it's a deal breaker" when we'd hear about how pathetically weak it was? 'Cuz thats what it was for me.Well that was the Union's preferred narrative when the generation started

GAF loves their Graphics Threads. As much as people preach Gameplay over Graphics, they sure do talk a LOT more about the pretty ones. I won't separate myself from that either.
I think this whole topic is overblown and Hyperbolic. Way too much speculation and even projection. Doom and Gloom as usual.
Doesn't get any more clear cut than that.
Narrative differs for everyone. Controller is my biggest differentiator for multiplats. I'd play on PS4 Slim over Scorpio if controllers were reversed. Honestly people need to stop being so offended by other people's consumer preferences.
My observation is that it's odd that niche exclusives have suddenly become the most important part about a console to the mainstream. In the span of a few weeks, Xbox gamers will have Prey, Little Nightmares, The Surge and Forza Hot Wheels. Before that there was Ghost Recon, Mass Effect and Halo Wars. Bunch of single player games in that mix.
The "there's no games" messaging is absolutely idiotic and a lot of people have exposed themself trying to contain other people's excitement by creating the most arbitrary changing standards.
Agreed, but it's something that's so obvious that it doesn't need to be said. Can you imagine Sony coming out and saying this last gen but hinting they can't compete in multiplayer? How many more 360's would have been sold? Because right now, Phil just sold some PS4's with these comments. There's no reason to say it. You either do it or you don't. People want to know what the direction of the Xbox brand is. This didn't help clear that up at all. People should have known from day one this was the direction though. Less single player games, more service based games when it comes to exclusives. They've always relied heavily on third party and third party exclusive deals to deliver those single player games while prioritizing multiplayer with their first party studios.
Great video for anyone with an open mind. This guy has 1 million gamerscore, so i'd think people would value his opinion here. No offense Kvally, but i took a look at your profile and you only have 40,000 gamerscore in 14 years. You're not exactly a big gamer like the people who are questioning Microsoft's direction. If you play casually, then obviously Xbox is the best place to play. Not saying it's more casual than PS4 but come on. At this point, it's as pick up and play as it gets with their portfolio of exclusive games on offer.
Sorry but you have no say whether I am a big gamer or not. Having owned and played nearly every console starting in the 70s with pong and on PC since TRS 80 and Commodore 64 you have NO IDEA how big of a gamer I am so I would not comment on that again in the future. Achievement whores don't make one a big gamer.
Move on.
Like I said you have no clue. Carry on.It's okay to admit when you're wrong Kvally. Maybe more Xbox and less System Wars and you'd see why people are concerned with Microsoft's direction. It's not some grand conspiracy that you and others are making it out to be. Not everyone owns every console like you. People bought an Xbox expecting the blockbuster games Microsoft hypes up every year and they have the right to voice their opinion.
No hard feelings.

WTF! Gamerscore? Really?
Meh he has gone crazy today. I am too busy playing and enjoying games. Playing Gears 4, Horizon Zero Dawn and Cities Skylines Xbox One edition right now and haven't paid any attention to achievements. Just playing game after game.WTF! Gamerscore? Really?
I've been gaming since Atari. Owned high end PCs during two generations. Nintendo, Sega Master System, Genesis, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, N64, OG Xbox, GameCube, 360, Wii...and now Xbox One and PS Pro.
My gamerscore is under 20K and I've had the same XBL account since it launched day 1. Being an achievment whore has no relation to how much of a gamer you are. Some of us ignore achievements.
In fact I'd argue that the reason my gamerscore is lower is that after years of binging on single player games, most linear, story driven single player campaigns are pretty stale in terms of gameplay and you don't get a lot of achievements playing online.
I spread my gaming in 14 years between Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Wii, PSP, 3DS and PC. I don't focus all my gaming on one device. If I could only play on one though it would be on Xbox for the better games better online and better controller. You seem to be missing the point. As with this topic, and why people are concerned. To you guys, it's just a conspiracy because you get what you want out of Xbox, and you own every console. No big deal, you'll get your fix elsewhere from other consoles if Xbox isn't getting it done.
Not everyone has that luxury. There are people who bought an Xbox One for specific games, for the reason that they believed it had or would have the best overall library of games. Gamerscore just shows how much you play your games, and if you have 40k in 14 years, you don't play very many games. So obviously you wouldn't have the knowledge for this topic given that you don't have the experience.
It's like asking a plumber to fix a car. Obviously Microsoft's current single player offerings are more than enough for someone who only completes 2-3 games a year. You don't apply to the discussion, but please continue to tell others how they should feel about it.
Meh he has gone crazy today
But they didn't flop. Not really. Just addressing the elephant in the room. We're all going in circles about how we should feel about the topic and how it's just some console war nonsense and there's no real concern. Given the facts, every Xbox One single player experience outside of Halo and Gears has flopped this gen in sales and then going off these comments from Phil one can only wonder what the future holds. We're not getting any sequels to the games that flopped apparently and games are being canceled. So where is the money going? I don't think it's unreasonable to question a company's motives who's about to become the first trillion dollar company.
Trust me fellas, i'm not trying to question your heart as a gamer. Only your motives. If you barely play the few games that are on offer to begin with, how can we use that as a sample size to say that it's just a conspiracy? There are people out there who bought an Xbox for single player games believe it or not and they're simply wondering what's next for the brand. It's all valid concern, and anyone who payed $299, or especially $499 at launch has every right to voice that concern. Please stop trying to label everyone as a conspiracy theorist when these topics come up. A topic, that Microsoft started themselves.
I'm not labeling anyone
