Official Thread VR Headset

I wondered if anyone adds on an additional headset with mic to their Oculus?

So far, I'm very pleased with the Oculus Rift S. The only issue I have is some games seem to stutter or frame drop just a little bit in animation like the zombies in Arizona Sunshine. Yet, moving around in VR Chat there are no issues so I'm wondering if this issue is specific to some games. It may have to do with my CPU. Otherwise, the graphics all look great.

I'm curious about VR Chat which is why I wondered if a headset with a better mic might be a good idea. Real headphones for music based games like Synth Rider might be a good idea to.

I know some people plug in their own headphones for better sound quality. There are vids on YouTube.

i think I saw that video and one of his big recommendations was the Skull Candy Crush. However, that one seems to only be headphones and no mic even though as he suggests it probably plays music great.

Probably best to ask on reddit Oculus. I see posts regarding the headphones all the time.

Wow, the screen door effect seems to have been pretty much eliminated in the Reverb G2. The image quality looks amazing in this footage filmed through the headset. Can’t wait to see what Sony come up with for PSVR 2

I just had to watch this again. This is clearly a step towards Microsoft gearing up to get into the consumer game, IMO.

They seem to be now partnering with both Valve and Oculus, and actually have about the same stake in Facebook that Sony has in Epic Games (1.3 vs 1.4%). If they were waiting for the iron to heat up, I think now's definitely the time. I looked at Bill Stillwell's LinkedIn: Here's what it says:

Principal Program Manager - Mixed Reality
Mar 2020 – Present 5 months
Principal Program Manager on the Mixed Reality team at Microsoft

• Engaging with development teams to bring content to market through deep technical relationships with partners, while also driving deep engagement with engineering teams to bring forward customer requirements into our hardware and services solutions. Includes growing existing product offerings from small to large scale deployments.

• Driving deep technical engagement and on-boarding for Mixed Reality HW and services, including launching v1 products into nascent markets. Includes driving a partner portfolio strategy by working across marketing, sales, product management, engineering and the commercialization team. Also responsible for partnering with Telco’s and driving technical enablement.

Just a reminder that he went from leading the Xbox BC program to leading the xCloud program. Now he's at WMR... Starting to get something else off the ground. "launching v1 products into nascent markets"

nascent

HP Reverb G2 vs Oculus Rift S vs Valve Index through the lens comparison.

I watched this on my projector last night, and the Reverb G2 pretty much destroys these other 2 headsets, even if not as wide as Index. Amazing, as the colors and resolution almost make everything look real!

I setup full body tracking following a tutorial and 3rd party Driver Mod for the XBox One Kinect to us it with PC and Steam VR. It's crazy to move and track the whole avatar.

It has the same limitations of the Kinect having to face forward of course, but it's cheaper than hundreds of dollars in HTC Vive trackers.

I'm not sure if this works in all games, but I tested it in VR Chat. Also, not sure how beneficial it is when gaming, but it was a cool project to work on.

In a perfect world, MS would have kept post-360 Kinect as an option, and never bundled it with XBOne in the first place. It should have been a slow burn, and regularly found its way into the VR world as a body tracker. It already did full body tracking 10 years ago (7 for XBOne), and VR still definitely still needs that now. Microsoft is often just really bad at timing! They had the right product at the wrong time, IMO. At least they made use of it in Hololens, but I don't believe they can use it for much more than hand tracking and object identification, from the inside-out version... Maybe if you bounced it off a mirror? Still, Kinect is a pretty simple solution to a rather complex problem that didn't really exist so much until after they killed it.

The Reverb G2 clarity is amazing.

I Love Tyriel's VR vids.... This is the power of collaboration, IMO. HP/Valve/Microsoft. Brand new image panel, researched by HP. The optics and speakers are from Valve, the inside out-tracking is via Microsoft, with further collaboration with HP and other partners by adding additional sensors. I just wish they were IR lights like Oculus, this time. I'm guessing that Oculus has a patent on the IR controllers, and they were not part of this collaboration, sadly.

...and why IR is better IMO is #1 controller battery life is way better than with white lights. #2 not distracting, since they are not visible to the human eye.

Facebook VRAR box spotted out in the wild. Wonder what it could be? Oculus Connect is coming up on the 16th September

When they hit true 8k, the porn world will really be revolutionized.

I read this in the comments. Not necessarily about screen resolution but the chip is capable of this

Standalone with an 8K 60fps playback. Looks like we have a new VR porn king, ladies and gentlemen.

That would be the perfect VR porn machine.

The rate that Oculus is advancing the Quest hardware is INSANE! Quest 2 is a BEAST!

And therein lies the Facebook dilemma... I wish it wasn't Facebook that was the one pushing VR so hard. They are quite literally the IOI from Ready Player One, and I feel like they are being so irresponsible to our changing society right now.

I'm excited about this new Quest 2, and there should be more information at Oculus Facebook Connect on Wednesday. I would be more excited though, if Zuckerberg would make a bold decision to end this information segmentation problem. [/rant]

That said, there was all this hype for years about VR, and I wasn't very compelled by that. Thankfully, as a result, we didn't waste any money on it. Equally, there was an enormous amount of hype around movement to the cloud for interactive entertainment distribution.

Well, R☆ did publish LA Noire: the VR case files...

Still, I'm not sure what this opinion even means, other than there wasn't enough of a profitability line before... OK... what about next year? What about in 3 years? VR is growing by leaps and bounds right now. Quest 2 is going to sell console numbers if it really releases at $300/$400. Current gen Quests were selling for like $1K on Ebay last week, since they've been sold out on and off for almost a year! When PSVR2 comes out, it could take off, as well.

I still think that there's a big chance to see Oculus Quest 2 wirelessly compatible with Xbox Series S|X at some point. If Microsoft would let some existing headset be compatible, they could possibly have a huge head start over Sony, allowing them to catch up and then some.

that’s my hope, for the latter, since ms and facebook seem to be in a new polygamous relationship
