What game wins 'Best Graphics of 2014'?

This looks amazing. Not pretty good, and no way is it obvious that it falls short of anything.

When you're system doesn't use all the pixels of your 1080p TV it is a blurry mess that a calculator could render where have you been? This is the same microscope used to point and laugh @ Ryse since launch. ps4 titles can't be exempt from the same scrutiny otherwise a person would be biased right?

Don't ask me about these rules I'm just applying them across the board. Why 720p is considered high def and amazing last gen and 900p is a blurry mess?
Well The Order 1886 does have a higher practical resolution than Ryse so...

we'll see, can anyone answer if indeed the black bars are present through the gameplay or just the cutscenes? How many pixels they take up?

They're present through the whole game and Ready at Dawn has said they're aiming for a 1080p equivalent within those frames.

Its the same effect as a 1080p bluray that uses em.
Unfortunately I think the whole game uses them for that cinematic effect.

It is quite clear they are using the black bars to get framerates to keep 30fps consistent. That's not up for debate.

oh.. I'm sorry.. did you not read that it wasn't up for debate? :)

There is no other reason to force black bars in the game without any option to turn them off, but I'm sure you are going to come up with something.. so let's hear it

It is an artistic direction you couldn't possibly understand.

Its more CINEMATIC!!!

Movies have black bars as the aspect ratio is different from TV. There is no reason for a game to have the black bars. Common sense tell you they did this to reduce amount of pixel to render, so the visuals can get a bit of a boost.

Have you read anything that the developers have said about it? the game was designed around that aspect ratio.

Its sad because we are just starting this console generation and having to make huge compromises like that already.

As far as best graphics of 2014 I'd give it to inFamous.

What's sad is he's making an assumption and saying it's fact.

If it is well received/reviewed then we hope all future titles will have black bars since that will be the cool new hotness right?

Not sure you are just trying to be funny or serious.

Crytek is a leading engine maker, it has as much interests in selling Ryse, as the engine itself. Obviously they have a clear edge when it comes to visuals. Have no doubt, that, as good as Ryse looks good on X1, it will looks better on PS4, & it does look better on good PC.

The same reason why Gears 1 blown everything away when it launched in 2007. Quality of tools & talent of developers play a huge part also. Just look at Konami PES vs Fifa15 on X1. You can't get 2 games that are closer in resources than sport titles, yet one looks significantly better than the others.

Visual fidelity is a combination of hardware capabilities & developer's capabilities & art direction.

This post has too much common sense not to give a +1.

Ryse on X1 would've taken 2013 IMO if they could've made it 1080p.

KZ: SF still has it topped with Ryse coming in 2nd.

I guess those indie titles that look like 8 bit games do it because the consoles can't handle higher fidelity graphics right? couldn't be because that was the vision of the developer.

Did SF win any awards like Ryse did for visuals?
