Who's going all digital next gen?

I'm already all digital on comp through steam, but still have all disc games on consoles. There's a reason for that. My 360 only has a 20 gig hd, so can't fit any games on it and my PS 3 has 120 gigs on it which is bigger but still small. However, the main reason is there has been no price advantage of going digital this gen and the games are just as expensive as retail games. Hopefully that changes next gen and with bigger hds in them, I can see myself buying more digital games on them.

I honestly don't see the prices going down, outside of sales of course. Dev's/pub's have been wanting to raise the price for a while now. They are getting very expensive to make and there's a lot of risk involved - most games will never sell like GTA or COD.

Thing is, I paid $90 - $100 for SNES games... over 20 yrs ago! Consumers have spoken though, and that is why it hasn't gone up. That is also why things like dlc and promoting DD have been such a focus lately. It gives them a way to earn some more cash without boosting the initial price.

I really want to go all digital, but feel like I am getting ripped off when there is no monetary advantage in doing so. I can't wait until console makers get out of bed with retailers and can offer a more pc-centric experience. I actually thought MS initial policy was at least a step forward, albeit flawed ill-represented.

you know all they have to do is send a patch and you can download all your games, Steam have the same thing as well where even if they company goes down they will send the last patch so you can have the game in any way you want.

MS isn't Valve. MS is a publicly held company that has to answer to stockholders. Valve does not. MS has a long way to go before they have the same level of trust as Valve. Their marketplace and prices aren't similar nor are they reactive to the market like Valve's-- see the 5 buck dl for Darth Vader on live for SC4. And they have their own walled garden that offers no competition like Steam does. And keep in mind Valve did not earn that trust over night.

You do know you can have it all downloaded so they cant flick a switch and make your games go away.

And if I own them on disc, I never have to wonder or worry if they will or if I downloaded everything or forgot something. All digital and I do have those concerns. I don't let other people or third partys have any say over anything I paid good money for. (I have no idea why anyone would want to add a third party to the equation anyway, but that is me) And I don't trust large multinational corporations to do what is right for me. I prefer to keep all options in my hands and not relent them to a corporation that cares little for me beyond what amount of cash they can divorce me from in a generation.

MS doesn't set DLC prices though, that is an issue with the publisher.

But why haven't they been working with those publishers to bring those games down in price to reflect the marketplace when both retail and Steam recognize such trends and react appropriately? End of the day it is their marketplace -- they make all the rules and have heavy influence. It reflects poorly on them and the publisher to be so slow to react. Why aren't retail and Steam so slow to react to the marketplace and why is MS?

Are you sure about the publisher setting prices? I thought MS set prices for things on marketplace. I remember Epic wanted to give away the first map pack for Gears of War for free and MS would not let them. They were forced to find a sponsor to pay for the giveaway.

No. The games cost far more than at retail. No competition means even higher prices. Slow depreciation of price. A single 50gb Blu-Ray is more than most peoples entire monthly download limit (here in the UK anyway). I don't own the game, only a license and can't decide for myself without permissions from 3rd parties what I can do with it. I'll stick with discs as long as they are available, for those reasons.

GTA 5 cost me £33 and I can lend it or sell it to whoever I like. GTA 5 on XBL costs £50 and can't be lent or resold. It's obvious what is the best deal for me.

Well, for GoW Microsoft was the publisher :p

And that $5 SC4 DLC is the same price on PSN, publishers post MSRP. Steam is like walmart and pretty much bullied publishers into lower prices, Retail gets away with it because they claim competition and hardships from digital markets. Sony/MS are closed systems so publishers don't need to lower the price, there is nowhere else to get it. Is it good? No, but MS/Sony doesn't have leverage in this case to help the prices go down..and publishers are greedy.

This is interesting. They guy who claims to have gotten his Xbox preorder early from Target was able to download the update and view the store. All his videos have been taken down by MS so I don't think it is completely made up. Anyway - he has been tweeting download sizes for those interested in going all digital - these are for XBO but I am sure PS4 will be similar downloads.

You can start planning how to reach your monthly ISP caps now :(

Ghosts 39 GB
Madden 25 12 GB
NBA 2k14 43 GB
NBA Live 14 9 GB
Forza Motorsport 5: 31 GB
Ryse: Son of Rome 34 GB
LocoCycle 13 GB
Dead Rising 3: 19 GB
Fifa 14 is 8 GB
Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag 20 GB
Just Dance 2014 is 22 GB
Skylander SWAP Force 15 GB
Zumba Fitness World Party 24 GB

The other interesting fact - either EA is far better at compressing/optimizing its game sizes OR its 'next gen' games are barely updated ports of their current gen name sakes.

I thought the same thing when reading the list you posted. Having been following the Madden coverage. I tend to lean toward the latter based on the Madden coverage to this point.

Ive decided to go all digital. *Struts around like a jackass
Its more expensive but I feel like Im taking advantage more of the features of the new consoles. And Im not one to trade my games anyway.

If day the EA ones are the standard up ports. Those sizes aren't really much larger than a few of this gens biggest games...

I gathered that EA is using the same yet pre-compression resource from current gen game and is running them on Ignite engine, but I could be wrong. I'd really like to see how Frostbite games - Battlefield 4 and NFS Rivals - would fare.

Good luck with that fellas. No way in hell will you find me downloading any games that are clocking in close to 50 gigs. That's a huge chunk of my download cap.

I want to go all digital this gen but damn MS doesn't have digital day one titles for 360. Holding off on a next gen system is going to be painful.

Nope. Buying phsical copies whenever possible.
RROD +DMR issues + multiple console sharing issues this gen, have shown me the "all digital" future doesn't benefit me in any way.
