I really hope that more people from Microsoft that are in the know like Albert Penello
continue to respond to these rumors and assumptions that are all over the place that
because currently the ps5 dev kits are higher performing than Scarlett's that means the
Ps5 is going to be way more powerful than Scarlett . Once the final dev kits are out with final soc
and memory for both systems then it will be certain which will have the performance edge. I intend on
buying both systems for exclusives and enjoy both regardless of final spec.

Panello is with MS anymore, dono why (maybe some old tweet), he’s at Amazon now (it’s in his profile).

It is fanboy rhetoric because you are acting like it's going to matter that much. Again the power differential will basically be all on paper next gen, neither one is going to be able to add enough power over the other to make a difference. The reason it mattered with the X1 and PS4 was Sony had over a 30% power advantage, most of their games were 1080p while MS was asking people to pay $100 more for an X1 where basically all of the games in the first few years were 720p to 900p. As long as they are close to each other next gen neither one is going to be hurt commercially.

Sony can't afford a huge power gap either because PlayStation is basically all that company has going for them, MS has money coming in from all kind of other areas while Sony has modest amounts coming in from a few places but PlayStation is their bread and butter and they can't afford to lose that. Again they are both going to get the best thing they can from AMD that will be workable in a console at the price point they are shooting for which is likely $499 for both.

Disagree.
MS always had better performing HW until the PS4 - XB1 launch. Part of the appeal of the Xbox Brand is Console HW superiority and this is important to the Xbox Fanbase. Sony on the other hand does very well with weaker HW.
Early PS2 had worse looking games than Dreamcast and still killed DC in sales even after launching a year later at $100 more per unit. Even comparing OG Xbox to PS2 where OGXB had games that looked a Gen ahead of the PS2 version, the PS2 still outsold the OGXB. 90% of PS3 games ran worse than their 360 counterparts even though 360 launched a year before and at $200 cheaper than PS3 yet the PS3 and 360 were neck and neck though the 360 had a full year head start.

Bottom line is its far more important for Xbox to have the HW superiority than for PlayStation.

Yes I knew he is no longer with Microsoft. I meant to say ex Microsoft and current Xbox team people that would know about all this.

Too late. Preorder cancelled.

Absolutely, especially after the disastrous X1 launch, where that power difference was one of the main talking points.

Sony will be fine either way, and so will Nintendo, but MS needs to have the power advantage right from the start this time around.

MS didn't always have stronger hardware, they had that with the original Xbox which launched a year after the PS2 and then the X1X, PS3 was technically more powerful than the 360 it just wasn't designed well enough for devs to actually access that power, the 360 was a more balanced console it wasn't more powerful.

The bottom line is they are both launching at the same time, they are both likely going to be looking to sell at the same price point, they are both using the same vendor for their CPU/GPU and they are both going to be limited by what AMD can accomplish by the time these consoles launch. Power isn't going to be the sales point next gen, hell if you listen to DF they are talking like both consoles will be under 10TF on paper but we'll get more out of them than we would if an equivalent 10TF version of the Pro/X1X GPU was put in. MS will always claim they are the best place to play power advantage or not, they'll talk up game pass and XBLG like they always do and that'll be their selling point, either company having a 10% advantage in some way isn't going to mean a thing next gen.

You can't really compare that launch with this one, they won't be hitting sub 1080p anymore, they won't be sticking a hated peripheral in the box and asking you to pay $100 more for a console that can't even hit full HD because they wanted to include Kinect which had already died a slow death on the 360. That was just a poorly planned out thing all the way around, people knew it was weaker and more expensive because Kinect was included, they also knew that MS had basically s*** the bed on new IP's and seemed to be lazily coasting on their big 4 without wanting to introduce anything new . None of that will happen next gen, they'll be on par regardless of who has a minimal spec advantage they'll both be hitting the same resolutions, higher framerates etc and will likely be the same price.

This is where I agree with JinCA. Power talking is not going to be the factor anymore, there has to be something that will separate them from each other and from the Hardware standpoint they look almost neck to neck.

The big difference is the online structure where this is the PlayStation weakest part of that department. MS got it right the first time right off the back in 2002 and been killing it to this day. Also, SONY joins MS cloud solution proves even more that SONY for how great they did and the hardware they sold which it doesn't sell a lot still don't have the funding to do cloud.

Service and what package is going to be the big factor from here on out. This is why MS feels good about this because they are their field that they are superior over SONY.

But who knows.

Oh I agree that basically performance will be the same, and at the end of the day, it’s what the devs do with it. And I agree that power was one of the only issues with the X1 launch.

But I still say it ended up being one of the biggest issues throughout most of the early part of the gen. Hell, that’s how we got the X1X, and exactly how it’s been marketed: 6 >4 and all that.

And there are already huge threads about supposed X vs PS5 dev kit specs wherein people are arguing over potential power differences, which is one reason AP even chimed in at all.

I’m just saying on paper MS can’t afford to lose ‘power’ as a talking point next gen. It’s too big of a point, and it matters to a lot of gamers, especially those MS ‘won back’ with the 1X.

If it’s stronger on paper, we’ll hear about lack of games again, but if it’s not, IMO it’s going to be the beginning of this gen all over again.

I get what you are saying but the power difference won't really show this time, with the X1 it was easy to see because you were seeing a lot of 720p games, they'll likely all be 4K all around next gen. Personally I'd rather see faux K and blow out the graphics more but that's just me :) I also don't think MS won back many people with the One X, I believe that was mostly just X1 buyers who upgraded, I think people like me who had skipped on xbox until then are in the minority, last I read the X1X is selling about 20% of total xbox sales so it really hasn't done a whole lot to ignite anything.

The 720P wasn't a power issue, it was a software tools issue.

It's undoubtedly selfish of me, but hey nobody is perfect. For the most part I just want both systems to be on par with each other, because that should decrease the chance of Xbox costing more than A PS5. But if any of the two are gonna be stronger I just hope it's Xbox because I really intend to stay with it since I have all my friends in party chat, I prefer the controller SO much over the DS4, and in general I just want to stick with their ecosystem.

But if those comparison videos show up from DF, and they will, of games like Cyberpunk for example and the PS5 has significantly better draw distance, loading times, LOD etc, I'm gonna be disliking it. We had that crap at the start of this generation and I was so glad when X came out.

All that being said, no matter who of the two comes out on top, I bet the differences will not be that big . Definitely not gonna see a repeat of X and Pro and for sure as hell not X1 and PS4.

They are reasons I got an X1 this gen....not doing it again. Xbox lost me with this shockingly bad generation, time for them to earn my money now.

Will be getting a PS5 first and then see how Xbox is doing a couple years in.

I hope Xbox has the graphical advantage. I think the industry dynamics just works better that way.

Xbox = Power
Sony= 1st party beasts
Nintendo= Nintendo

Xbox needs some kind of edge to be competitive.

There won't be much of a different between the two systems. Xbox will have gamepass and PS5 will have better exclusives and thats about the end of the differences and over time they may even match up on both.

Even with the new studios though? I don't think we should underestimate some of these studios, like The Initiative, Playground Studio #2 working on that open world RPG, Obsidian etc.

Sony absolutely is king now when it comes to amazing exclusives, but MS has a very good chance of changing the game, for themselves that is. Next gen has the potential to be something special.

Apparently Reiner clarified that he wasn't just talking about the PS5 devkits but that developers were given target specs, which is why developers can say it's more powerful?

That is why I said over time they could match them but the next few years? That is unrealistic as Sony has some of the best studios that exist. If Microsoft is going to develop their studios to something similar it isn't going to happen overnight
