The 720P wasn't a power issue, it was a software tools issue.

When you are still having a bunch of 900p games yeah it's a power issue too, yes the software improved over time and they were able to get more games up to 1080p but that wouldn't have been so hard had the GPU matched the one in the PS4.

I hope Xbox has the graphical advantage. I think the industry dynamics just works better that way.

Xbox = Power
Sony= 1st party beasts
Nintendo= Nintendo

Xbox needs some kind of edge to be competitive.

MS is a service based company, that's where their perceived advantage will probably be. They'll be pushing game pass hard and talking cloud services etc. If you can't see the power differential it doesn't really matter.

Yes, it would. The initial issue that caused an influx of 720P would still be a big problem.

Not saying there isn't a power difference. Just saying that 720p games had nothing to do with that difference.

Apparently Reiner clarified that he wasn't just talking about the PS5 devkits but that developers were given target specs, which is why developers can say it's more powerful?

For as much as everyone talks about how well trusted that guy is he really did everyone a disservice by saying anything. Because after that he then said I know more, but will not speak about it and then started to kind of change and clarify some things. Just shut your f***ing mouth at this point.

I’m watching GAF and ERA post reddit “leaks” on a daily and people start speculating on those rumors for pages and people start saying wild s***.

IMO I am thinking Sony’s dev kits are further along and have more RAM currently than the Microsoft’s. Who knows is MS even have proper kits out yet. But as we know RAM amount is one of the few things you can change late in the game.

The Game Informer writer knew exactly what he was doing. At any rate based on what MS and Sony have said we have the following:

Sony
Zen 2
Navi
Some sort of custom solid state drive solution
Softer language on ray tracing implementation

MS
Zen 2
Navi
Some sort custom solid state drive solution
Stronger language on ray tracing implementation

Sony may well have the more “powerful” console with their approach (focusing their APU on brute force) while MS has the more “advanced” console by having a more custom APU build with hardware ray tracing acceleration. Both can claim victory in the end if true.

This is where I agree with JinCA. Power talking is not going to be the factor anymore, there has to be something that will separate them from each other and from the Hardware standpoint they look almost neck to neck.
.
Agree, thinking if they might get an edge with some kind of peripheral? Something like a motion sensing camera of sorts, and perhaps a console targeted on media/tv ?

True, but by the time Xbox had caught up, the PR damage was already done.

Yeah but power wasn't the only issue, lack of new IP for the last few years of the prior generation, pricing, focusing on NFL and tv integration during the reveal, the whole DRM issue, forcing Kinect and having something some feared would be spying on them etc. They failed on virtually every front, that's why to this day they are well behind where the 360 was at this point in it's lifecycle. They have done things to improve no doubt about it but focusing on power as their main flaw at launch doesn't truly describe what a royal f*** up the whole thing was and why it was so hard to recover.

MS need to win on all fronts if the end game here is to go back to the 360 days. They don’t have the fan base like Sony does to carry a narrative. When this generation started MS had more games. Quality is another discussion, but Sony was bone dry for a couple years so what was the narrative? More powerful console, best place to play 3rd parties, and it was the Indy darling box.

Fast forward to Xbox One X and power doesn’t matter anymore. It’s about First party titles that look and play great. It’s all about goalpost moving from both bases to fit what the talking points currently are for said company. With Sony having the much larger base MS has to take as many talking points away from Sony.

Most powerful
Best and more first party games (all these new studios will help)
Most diverse line up of games

To me what MS has to do the most is use their legacy IP’s to bring people back to the brand. Stop waiting 3-4 years to bring back one old IP. Sony and Nintendo are soo good at hyping the industry with their old IP’s and bringing back favorites. MS has given us Battletoads, PD, and KI in the past 7 years.

If they are going to deliver on all that its going to take awhile. People are going to set unrealistic standards if they expect The Initiative to be Naughty Dog right out of the gate.

Keep in mind while that revealing back in 2013 was terrible and hurt them, it is no where the same level damage compare how Sony PS3 era with their online Infrastructure was breached.

That is still in people's mind to this day.

That is like me saying the RROD is still in people's mind. I don't think anyone cares anymore.

RROD effect is nowhere as damaging as the online Infrastructure, not even close.

Damaged to who though? Just like RROD it had no real impact on their ability to sell consoles and just like RROD it really sucked at the time and now nobody cares.

Sorry, but no....

Goalposts aren't moving...well your's are, but the complaint about Xbox all gen has been the same, you make out like it is just power but that was only part of the problem and complaint. MS gave everybody the perception that Xbox is no longer a game.console but a media box. Even right now at the end of the generation the exclusive games front is shocking, terrible.

Goal posts haven't moved. Xbox simply hasn't sorted all the issues and thus the perception and complaint 5 years later is still basically the same.

Going out and buying a bunch of AA game studios is not going to instantly win over the masses. Xbox is going to have to work really hard next gen to change perception and show these aquired game studios are worth buying the hardware.

Did you read what I posted? I said it’s goalpost moving from both sides to fit the narrative their favorite company is pushing.

And you can’t honestly sit here and tell me that leading up to this gen it was all power talk. Because the entire debate was 900p vs 1080p and 40 percent more powerful. Everything after that was just the cherry on top.

And what I said is true. Anything either of these companies push is what we turnaround and use as ammunition to go after one another. Microsoft had most of us on here talking about the cloud making up a portion of the 40 percent gap in the beginning. When Sony was pushing indie games PS fans thought it was the greatest thing and Ms fans were saying they weren’t really games. That’s goalpost moving at its finest and to think it’s hasn't happened and continues to happen daily is just ignorant.

I don’t even think thats what they want to deliver. But that’s what people want. MS wants to sell their 30-50 million consoles while having 30-50 million people signed up for game pass because it’s available on every platform possible.

I don't know a single person that talks about that and being that the PS4 is going to end up being the second best selling console of all time it would seem that nobody cares enough about it to not buy a console, hell Sony even started charging for PSN and people pay for the service, they made more money off of just PSN last year (including the game store) than MS made on ALL of Xbox for the year and more than Nintendo made for the whole year as well.

Not saying that at all. What I am saying is Xbox's problems are far bigger than some internet console war bulls***.

The whole power to games wasn't moving goalposts either, the game issue came first and started last gen.

All I'm saying is if Xbox doesn't have a significant HW advantage they will be dead in the water.
The PS brand is much bigger World wide which means MS will have an uphill battle where it will need every talking point and advantage it can get.
If PS5 has the better HW and 1st party then its over before it even starts...

Being the #2 player in a huge growing industry is a great place to be. Being #1 or go home is console war talk. I can think of a handful of Silicon Valley super titans who would love to be in the position MS is in gaming.

There can only be one :p

https://www.businessinsider.com.au/xbox-future-project-scarlett-phil-spencer-interview-2019-6

“Last year we said consoles, and we’ve shipped a console and we’ve now detailed another console. I think that’s plural,” Spencer said.

“Technically that is plural,” Spencer said with a laugh after I pushed him on the technicality he invoked. “Right now,” he said, “we’re focused on Project Scarlett and what we put on stage.”

Is that really going to help? X1X is significantly more powerful and doesn't seem to have helped much.

All of this is pointless anyway.Microsoft don't give sales figures anymore so we wont really know what is going on.

They won't be able to have a significant HW advantage unless they delay the launch for over a year, they can have all the money in the world but AMD is only capable of so much and MS has to face the same issues Sony does when it comes to heating, pricing and power draw. MS won't be dead in the water if they aren't more powerful, there can be more than one successful brand, McDonalds sells far more product than Burger King but they both have existed in the same market for years.

MS is in it to try to make money (as they all are) they aren't in it for bragging rights, yeah being number one will mean they make more money but at the end of the day if they are able to bring in enough money to make a decent profit that should be fine. They will never be what Sony is globally in the games market, they've had 3 generations and haven't made inroads in most of Europe or Japan, if anything they've gone backwards. Xbox fans need to realize their console will never be number one globally in sales, that doesn't mean that xbox can't be successful, if MS didn't think they could make money with it they wouldn't bother with it.

Doesn't have to be a flat power advantage. The hardware accellerated ray tracing could be that advantage--if it is in Scarlet. Especially if PS5 is software based and very limited because of it.

I have seen rumours that the PS5 will cost $800(extremely unlikely) so perhaps the hardware advantage could be in perceived value.

Yeah that price isn't happening lol also the ray tracing is going to be limited on both consoles, if AMD can't even include it in their GPU's coming out this year and their "vision map" shows it for "select lighting effects" next year it doesn't sound like the consoles are going to be able to use it in the same way some people are talking about. Matt at resetera who works in the industry and would know more than any of us said they are both using hardware ray tracing.

Honestly, AMD doesn't seem interested in onboard ray tracing at all. Which is why MS were apparently so heavily involved. Don't think you can use AMD as a guide here.

I hope Matt is right, but i'll go with official info...both are doing RT but Sony's method is unknown and MS is hardware.
