Big profits always bring the feels....

Welcome to Microsoft's 75th, Quaterquell... May the odds be ever in your favor.

I hate the way that they're reporting numbers now. Just don't tell us anything, instead of fluffing the numbers.

Straight cash homie. If you're Microsoft, hardware sold really doesn't matter. They make money hand over fist.

Right because people laughing @ MS but forget they are a software company. That is where they make the break, not hardware. This is why you don't see Sony posting these kind of numbers.

Microsoft posted hardware numbers all of last gen. So did they just recently become a software company?

Hardware, smardware.

48 million monthly active Xbox Live users!

Check out the growth.

Based on there latest earnings reports, software no longer is their bread and butter Their cloud infrastructure has surpassed their software in net profit.

I'm going to becareful how I answer this....
Last gen they always posted software which it was their software attached rate.

Hardware is something MS could care less, its the software, services, and now their cloud.

Again MS is miles ahead of Sony.

MS posted hardware last gen and the only thing MS is ahead of Sony is the size of their wallet.
The only product more known then the PS that MS makes its windows and its full of problems.

They very much talked about 360s sold all last gen. Only reason they don't mention hardware sold this gen is because it is significantly worse than the ps4 when compared. If Microsoft and Sony switched sides, guarantee Microsoft would be talking about Xbox ones sold.

MS never announced software attach rate. Not that it would explain why they started up a new trend of announcing monthly and quarterly Xbox Live online service subscriptions nor explain why they stopped announcing Xboxes sold this generation.

announcing monthly and quarterly Xbox Live online service subscriptions

They didn't do that either. Monthly active users is simply unique gamertag profiles that have signed in to Xbox Live (as a Gold or free member) from any device that allows you to do that.

The 48 million in a quarter is not a measure of the number of paying Gold subscribers. It has been postulated that the big jump in number this quarter was also affected by the deferment of Windows 10 metrics reporting to the same quarter. So some of those 'new' users could be Windows 10 users signing into the Xbox app on a W10 device as well, rather than new Xbox hardware users .

The interesting thing will be the 360 install base user drop off and how that affects the numbers. It's difficult to split because of the variable that one device can be home to multiple Xbox Live profiles and accounts. However, if a user on 360 upgrades to an Xbox One then its the same user and profile, not a new Xbox Live customer or a plus one to that metric if they have been recently active on their previous console. Of course, as the gen goes on there will be new Xbox Live profiles created and used attached to new Xbox hardware sales, but I wonder how much growth they will see in that metric particularly as it was largely static for last year despite selling millions of new Xboxes. I could see a slightly lower MAU number next quarter if the Windows 10 profile theory is true.

I never said Microsoft was announcing active XBL Gold memberships. I never mentioned paid subscription either. So if you are just putting words in my mouth. That's not nice. :(

Huge jump in Q2. I'm sure that made some people very happy.

You guys can say what you want. Microsoft doesn't move the goalposts. They are the goalpost. They call the shots. They're industry leaders in every way. I'm sure Microsoft could buy Sony, Nintendo, and Apple just for s***s and giggles tomorrow if they really wanted to. When you're the best in the world at what you do, the sky's the limit.

To be fair, you did use the word "subscriptions", which may be the source of his confusion.

Anyways, I would suspect that the change in emphasis to Xbox Live stats is simply due to the fact that those numbers are more relevant than straight-forward hardware numbers. This is because consoles are much than just a box, they are more of a service. In the case of Xbox Live, it's a service that goes across several platforms.

So Microsoft is now accumulating negative Xbox One sales. All hail the Doom Box!

Those were 2 million Windows Phone users that signed into the Xbox app by accident so don't count.

46 million unique users signed into Xbox Live last quarter. That's a lot, that's like the entire population of Spain.

Gaming revenue increased $64 million or 4%, primarily due to higher revenue from Xbox Live and video games, offset in part by lower Xbox hardware revenue. Xbox Live revenue increased 22%, driven by higher revenue per transaction and volumes of transactions, as well as growth in subscribers. Video games revenue grew 9%, driven by the sales of Minecraft. Xbox hardware revenue decreased 26%, mainly due to a decline in Xbox 360 console volume and lower prices of Xbox One consoles sold.

Ashamed of your current tag?

Were you gutted that Lisa Simpson was taken by 2003?

Sick of being made fun of because you picked a now out of date and uncool pop culture reference?

Well, oh boy, your luck might be in! 1 MILLION gamertags are going to be recycled so you have a chance to drop that embarrassing moniker on XBL you currently wear for something fresh and old.
