“It was clearly a bit more complicated to extract the maximum power from the Xbox One when you’re trying to do that. I think eSRAM is easy to use. The only problem is…Part of the problem is that it’s just a little bit too small to output 1080p within that size. It’s such a small size within there that we can’t do everything in 1080p with that little buffer of super-fast RAM."

So is it an issue that can be fixed with future SDK updates, extra 8% GPU usage?

Or is 1080p couldn't be hard to hit with graphics-intensive games?

It seems Microsoft botched the design all around. But Im sure it will have its share of amazing looking games.

I don't think Microsoft 'botched the design' at all. I think they made what they were aiming for. They had TV, apps, & services in mind when designing the Xbox One. If they had gaming in mind, that's what they would have aimed for, a beastly gaming box. That isn't their agenda anymore.

But misterxmedia (aka puresoul) says there is really a secret second layer that hasn't yet been revealed and therefore there is really 128MB of esram. Yes, he really posted that last week.

The extra esram in hiding in the clouds.

I still think Sony was super lucky to have 8GB of GDDR5. Microsoft went with GDDR3 because it was the only sure way to get 8GB of it in a console. I read an article that the PS4 was originally only 4GB of GDDR5 until some unexpected development paved way for the final 8GB we have in the release console. In all honesty, Sony played it risky and was balls to the wall. Sony almost gave Microsoft the RAM advantage, that is if Sony couldn't have made the jump to 8GB.

They say that they will comfortably have 1080P with no concerns as due to latest SDK. So that sort of undoes the first section of the article quoted in the thread, eh?

Also, this was already posted and discussed in the Xbox forum.

So, amidst all the dumb s***. Has anyone ever confirmed the 8gb of NAND couldn't be used for gaming?

Maybe to hold data that doesn't change much, but you typically do not want things that get rewritten lots in memory like that as it has a certain number of times it can be accessed before failure that is much shorter than SSD.

Which makes sense. I just remember listening to some keynotes about the possibilities of utilizing NAND for elements inside the space that didn't change much. Not that I have any feeling that's possible with the One. They've just never really explained it to the T. Hints of the OS, video,... nothing really concrete. (Except Devs have no access) I'm still curious if they can shut down metro, for intensive games. Barebones, straight to the game and the services...when done, boot up to the OS.

Yeah I guess that's true. I just wish the GPU wasn't so gimped.

That would mean no snapping, no quick swapping, no background apps, basically you would take away half of what the xbox one is trying to accomplish, right ? We have seen already though how MS is reducing kinect resources and freeing them up for devs. I wouldn't be surprised if the OS gets similar treatment down the road.

I would say its the ddr 3 that is the biggest issue.

Really? I can't really fault Microsoft for that situation though. 8GB is more than what most thought we would get.

GPU just seems like something that they should have been closer to the competition on. Or at least make the esram big enough for what they needed.

You can fault them though. I mean they new DDR3 wasn't good enough which is why they added esram. Yes, 8GB in total is great, but only 5GB is for games ( right ? or has that changed) and this is much closer to what many expected ( 4GB).

This is the smallest jump consoles have ever seen, and one of , if not THE longest time gap between generations. This generation is just a disappointment plain and simple. Not that I personally care much, I abandoned that sinking ship after games like Crysis came about.

That being said, being late in this stage these consoles should be harnessing the power of a GeForce Titan and a CPU the equivalent processing power of an i7 CPU.

Good points guys.

At least Ryse gives me hope that the thing can pump out nice visuals. I'm not a super graphics where though. Some of Wii U's upcoming games look awesome to me. Maria Kart, Bayonetta and Xenogears.

Errr....no. Unless you want your console burning down your home ? putting uber powerful stuff like the TITAN and i7's is great in theory, but how you going to effectively cool that in such small boxes with poor air flow, limited ventilation, and very small fans ? Not to mention cost of such a thing.

This is the point of diminishing returns. It was always coming, and should have been expected.

Yah. There is the snag right there.

What should make you happy though is that all the big boys, Intel, Nividia, and AMD are all on a power conservation trip. Who knows what marvels will occur during this gen

Cough steambox cough. I dunno about a titan but we should have atleast got something on par with an i7 and a 780

my point is steam boxes are pretty much console form factor and have a lot beefier specs. They manage to keep those cool enough so why can't sony and ms? I'm definitely not for making excuses for these companies thats for damn sure.
