The Dark Souls Thread! v2.0

The capra demon is generally regarded as one of the most annoying fights (for all the reasons you mentioned). The others are not so bad, but some are hard in other ways. Most of them are not too bad though. There are a few that may frustrate you quite a bit, but not because of a bullsh!t small room with a cheap fight.

If you are getting really frustrated with any one part or boss, just post here and let us know. We can generally see what you are doing wrong or if you are making things harder for yourself than they should be.

Good to know man. Very glad to hear there won't be fights exactly like this. I noticed that after the hounds were dead, and not blocking my path anymore, the demon really wasn't too bad. But that;s easy talking for me when i was on that ledge firing off soul arrows at him, haha.

I think i'd like some general advice. I am a Pyromancer and most of the times i was using the Knight Shield + Uchigatana sword and switched it up with Fireball. Now that i also have Soul Arrows, i might be starting to lean more towards magic, but no doubt i will encounter plenty of enemies that i best simply kill with sword. To upgrade my Fireball and Soul Arrows.....how do i do that? Do i simply do that by levelling up a certain stat?

Also, so far i've mostly been levelling my vitality and endurance, and sometimes strength, dexterity and intelligence to be able to wield a certain weapon/spell. Is this wise? Should i keep on levelling my vitality and endurance? And then about armor....i am still using the Pyro's default tattered cloth robe, but i have reinforced it. I did find several armors that provide me a better Physdef, but are far from poison resistant. What is generally the best thing to do...keep using this armor or should i switch it up with some others now and then too?

It sounds like you are on the right path. I'll give some general advice based on what you mentioned.

Vitality and endurance are always useful. I'd take them up to maybe 40 eventually, but 20 is good for now. Put stats where you need them the most. If you keep dying in one hit, upgrade vitality. If you keep running out of endurance, then upgrade that. Listen to your character.

To upgrade the pyromancy flame, you need to free the trainer. Luckily, he is right in the next area after the capra demon, so you can go there now. He is in the depths which is left of the capra demon area. Hint: do NOT attack the barrels when freeing him. Instead, roll through him so you don't accidentally hit him. Then, he will go back to firelink, and you can pay souls to upgrade your pyromancy flame which upgrades all pyromancy spells. He also sells spells. There are other trainers later.

To upgrade spells like soul arrow, this needs intelligence. Also, this is a lowly sorcerer spell. You can buy better ones later. Did you free the first sorcerer trainer in undead burg? He should be back at firelink to sell more spells. Be warned that the slower spells are harder to use during boss fights. Generally, if it says "heavy" it is slow. I like the spell "great soul arrow", personally.

Armors are important. Only worry about poison if you are actually being poisoned. There are not many areas in the game where you can be poisoned, and you can farm for grass to cure it in the forest anyway. To be honest, if you are going to get poisoned, you probably can't avoid it anyway, so don't worry about it. Get some good armor and upgrade it. Also, if you have not killed Havel in undead burg, do that now so you can wear his ring which lets you wear heavier armors and maintain good roll speed. You can also find some good armor sets in the forest area.

The knight shield and uchigatana are both good. The uchigatana is a dexterity weapon, so upgrade dex if you want more damage, or you can make it lightning/fire/whatever later. You may find other weapons or shields that you like more later. But these will get you through the game if you upgrade them all the way. Of course, half the fun is trying out different weapons, especially since this is your first run through the game.

Yep, i rescued that sorcerer and i also bought the heavy soul arrow from him. Sounds like i should have bought the great soul arrow from him then, ah well. I quit playing yesterday after i wrote the message, cause it was 4 am then and that meant it was time to catch some sleep. I'm going back to the game now and i will keep in mind what you told me,. Thanks man.

Is there a way to increase weapon durability? My Uchigatana has only 80.

Good to know man. I have travelled through the Depths, not a very nice place and boy...do you have to be careful with those frog like creatures. Anyway, i rescued the pyromancer trainer and i can now train my fireball spell, but i can also buy the fire orb which improves upon the fireball. What to do now? Do both? I mean it doesn't replace it, right? So i might as well choose em both.

Oh i was wrong..i didn't upgrade fireball, i upgraded pyromancy flame, which is the glove. So this automatically improves combustion and the likes as well? Also...how do i increase the number of fireballs i can shoot? Last thing for now....i increase casting speed by upping dexterity, right?

You can have as many spells/pyro as you have attunement slots. So, let's say you buy 2 copies of fireball and 1 fire orb. If you have 3 attunement slots, you could have fireball, fireball, and fire orb all at the same time. Of course, you could also equip fireball and soul arrow, or any combination. You would just need to switch between the pyro glove and the sorcerer's catalyst.

Upgrading the pyro glove upgrades all "offensive" spells. I don't think it upgrades passive spells such as iron flesh or flash sweat or like poison spells. Beware also, that iron flesh was severely nerfed in a patch, so it's not so great now.

Actually, there have been a lot of patches, so if anything I say is wrong, please correct me. Just don't believe anything that someone said if they didn't do proper testing!

Anyway, I would not recommend increasing dexterity just for faster spell casting unless you actually want to go down the dexterity path. If you are using dexterity weapons and can use the points, then go ahead, but there are plenty of other valuable stats to worry about.

Well, so far i have been using the Uchigatana a lot and that one is B, so that means dexterity if i remember correctly. But since my vitality and endurance are at 20, i'll probably be upping those two the most for the time being. Anyway....i have included a picture of something, i don't know what it means, but it shows this icon under my stamina bar..and for some reason when i hold left analog stick up, nomally i would run right away, but my character first slow walks for like 5 seconds and then goes into a run, it also doesn't always register when i press the B button to run. Am i cursed or something? I did use the purging stone after i was cursed and poisoned by those weird frog creatures. Anyway...here's the pic, that icon shouldn't be there:

Are you wearing the ring of the evil eye that you found in the sewers? That's probably what the icon is.

In regards to run speed, what is your equip load? I think in this game, you need to stay below 50 percent. All cursing does is affect your health, so that's not it.

lulz so I had my first encounter with an invading player as a black phantoms. I was busy doing something else and when I returned to the game there was a fog gate so I was confused. I was in 1-2 and the guy was just killing the dragon. He ran back to the beginning of that area and found me and just ran past so I followed. He helped me kill everyone up to the boss fight and dropped a bunch of healing items before leaving.

Yep, that's it man. The ring. It is a good thing then. :)

Today was a good day when i tcame to Dark Souls. I finished the Gaping Dragon on my first try, did not look at any guides. He looked menacing, but he wasn't too challenging, so that was good. It still felt damn awesome when i killed him, cause as soon as i saw that huge ass area, i just knew some big fight would take place there and i already began biting my nails, lol. Blighttown now, at the bonfire there. Yeah...i have been loving these hours of Dark Souls today. And goddamn is this game addictive.

I had someone invade me too. It showed the message in red letters i believe, and i was at the merchant right before entering Blighttown in the Depths. This motherf***er went after me though and killed me. I don't get it though. Was this a real player? How is that possible when i was in party chat? Online function is disabled then.

You can tell if it is an actual player invader by the name usually. There is only one npc invader that I can think of, though my memory is hazy. I'm not sure how party chat works. I had the game on PS3 and never used anything like that. I have it on PC too, but it used GFWL when I played it, and the online was f*cked.

Have fun in blighttown, btw. ;)

I think i am done in Blighttown. Murdered Quelaag and completely explored it. I have a small problem though. I spoke to the pyromancer at Firelink Shrine and i said 'yes' to a question of his. After i came back from a trip to Undead Burg he was gone. So i looked it up on Google and this is how it is supposed to be. Problem is...i needed him to level my Pyrmancy flame to +10 or so, otherwise Quelana the pyro merchant in Blighttown won't appear. Which is true....i have Pyro flame at +9, and she is not there. Who can i go to to level up my pyro flame?

EDIT

Nevermind all this. The guy next to Quelaag's sister does that as well. :)

I just finished 4 - 2 in Demon's. The Old King was not hard with the Thief Ring. I think the reason why I was having so much trouble with this level was I was pushing too hard . . . Too fast. That is the kiss of death in any Souls game. I don't know how much treasure or loot I'm missing because if something looks too hard to get then I move on. I'll pick it up on a subsequent play through. I also just got Second Chance!

Off to the Tower of Latria!

Ok, just finished 3 - 1 Tower of Latria. I thought the music, boss, and atmosphere for the level was really good. I enjoyed it. I saved Sage Freke as well. What is it with these powerful wizards getting jailed? I only had to fight Fool's Idiot twice before I figured it out lol.

Lastly, just got started on 3 -2 and now I know what everybody is talking about regarding atmosphere. It is quite memorable.

The boss of 3-2 is one of the 3 hardest bosses in Demon's Souls. It's that platform you can get knocked off of that's the main problem. Watch to make sure he doesn't knock you off.

Will do Godsmack. I quit playing 3 - 2 when I fell off a ledge. It was a good reminder to take my time again. And is that a heart in the tower? I'll give the boss in this level a go and I have no idea where I'm going to next.

Good man. You've already beaten my point in dark souls. I got stuck on boss battle and never got back to finishing it.

I actually just realized that something I said earlier was wrong. I said I only remembered one npc invader, but there are at least 3. One guy named Kirk will invade in at least 3 areas, and there's a guy named leroy. Of course, you have to be in human form to see them. Kirk first invades in the Depths, so you may not have seen it. If you kill these npc invaders, you can get items. If you kill Kirk three times, you get some special armor, though it may be too late if you missed the first one, but it's no big deal.

Oh but i have to be honest, i did not finish her off by myself. I saw a summon sign and i decided to do it. So a NPC phantom helped me to destroy her. :)

Right now i have to go to Sen's Fortress ( i am not gonna lie...to be sure i take the 'right' path, i use Gamepressure's guide to this game. Only for the path, nothing else. Unless i get completely stuck on a boss fight) and after the things i heard about Sen's Fortress and it's Ornstein fight....i am not looking forward to that much, lol,

Yeah, yesterday in Blighttown i saw this guy coming after me..clearly not a normal enemy. I killed him too. By the way...how do these summon signs work? So far the only times i was able to summon a phantom was before the gargoyle fight and Quelaag. The fight against the Butterfly i didn't see one...but i was human. I ask this because if the Ornstein battle really proves to be indeed crazy annoying and challenging...i hope i can count on a phantom to help me out.

There are several areas where you can summon an NPC. Solaire will help you in several spots, including Ornstein and Smough when you get to Anor Londo, his sign is on the stairway on the left side in front of the boss area. Then, there's a witch you can summon for the butterfly fight (which you already did I guess). Her sign is kinda hidden under the stairs. Iron Tarkus can be summoned in Sen's Fortress. He'll be in the lone tower just right of the boss fog gate. There are some more, but I'm straining my brain to remember these.

Those are just the NPCs. You can summon humans in various areas as well, though you need to keep in mind soul level. So, if you are in an area where everyone is around soul level 30, and you are soul level 70 or something, you can expect to have to wait longer to see signs pop up. Generally, people will either put their signs in two places. If they want to do the entire level with you, they will put their sign by the bonfire. If all they want to do is the boss, they will put it right in front of the boss door. There are some areas where you cannot place a summon sign, so test to see if you can place your sign to know.

NPC signs are always there, though they are sometimes hard to see. Human signs come and go, so be patient. Also, keep in mind that bosses get more health when you summon people, so pray they don't die on you or you're going to have an even harder fight.

I must say that i find it a damn cool system in this game. There's something really cool about seeing these messages on the ground, people warning you for stuff or trolling you and what not. The summoning stuff is really nice too, just a goddamn shame it's all unavailable when i am in party chat. And most of the time during my gaming sessions, especially in the evenings...i am in party chat with several of my friends. Basically i will be missing out on the online stuff, unless i play the game more during the day.

Anyway, i have another question...it's a rather long one though, so i'll put it in spoiler

Ok, so here's the deal.

I am a Pyromancer, level 43 and story wise i am going to Sen's Fortress now. I've been using the Tattered cloth robe for a long part of my playthrough so far and in Blighttown i found the Crimson Robe which i have worn for a while now and also upgraded to +2. But the thing is..i am a bit tired of seeing this outfit on my character all the time, and so i want to change it to something else. Right now in my inventory i have the Knight armor, Elite knight armor and Brigand armor. Elite armor is the one stat-wise that is most close to my Crimson robe and it looks damn cool too.

Stats of my Crimson robe are:

Physdef 38.1
Strike. 41.9
Slash 38.1
Thrust 38.1
Magdef 39.3
Firedef. 22.6
Litngdef. 28.6
Poise. 0.0 (but while wearing Wolf Ring is fine for poise)
Bleed resist 22.9
Poison resist 22.9
Curse resist 22.9

Elite knight armor:

Physdef 39.0
Strike 37.8
Slash 45.2
Thrust 39
Magdef 17
Firedef 18
Litngdef 15
Poise 20
Bleed resist 23
Poison resist 16
curst resist 0

Now most of these stats get much higher of course with a bit of levelling and i can level the Elite armor up 3 times now. It probably still won't give me as good Magdef as the robe does, but hey. But one thing i wonder about is...equipment load.

When i have my Crimson robe on and it's waistcloth, Elite knight gauntlets, Gargoyle helmet, Wolf ring..my equipment load is: 24.6/62.0

When i have the full Elite armor on and Havel's ring, it is: 36.8/93.0

What i loved about the robe and default Pyro clothing is how fast the character is, i tested this out with the Elite armor on and with Havel's ring to improve equipment load and the guy seems quite fast. So yeah..basically..would this be a wise decision? An equipment load of 36.8/93.0 is not too bad, right?

Anyway, the big plus about the robe obviously is the Magdef, but how much will i need that for the upcoming locations?

Oh and also...

I have been using the Crystal Shield ever since the Depths, but now i found out i can't even upgrade it. So i should get rid of this asap. I do have the Knight shield, is that a fine shield to continue with?

wtf in Demon's Souls I was invaded again as soon as I started a level. The hit boxes are beyond horrible wtf? The guy had a two handed sword and I was to his side and still getting hit by him. Bulls***

Well, under 50 percent equip load will get you a decent roll. This is what I usually aim for. There are some mega heavy armors in the game, and if you're using heavy weapons and a heavy shield with that, you can even do the fat roll with good success.

If you are a fan of dodging rather than blocking, then you can either stay below 50 or stay below 25 percent. There are multiple roll speeds in this game. There is also a ring that let's you do a ninja flip roll, but I don't know if it's been patched or not. It's in the forest, and you have to kill an npc to get it, which may or may not be a good idea at this point.

Anyway, If you want to try a very heavy armor, there is the stone armor set deep in the forest. You may need to go to the lower forest first and then work your way up (past the hydra) if you have not paid Andre the 20k souls to unlock the door.

Some more heavy armor can be bought in Sen's Fortress from the merchant there. He also sells a tower shield I believe. And again in Anor Londo there are some nice equipment sets again.

If you want a new shield, well there are really heavy shields or medium shields. Some drop from enemies, some are bought from merchants. There was an Eagle shield in upper Blighttown which is a large shield, but it's wooden so it doesn't block 100 percent, but it is nice.

There's a hidden merchant in Firelink that sells boss armors. You should return to him every now and then when you beat a boss to see if he has anything new. He's under the bridge.

As far as magic defense goes, there are maybe 2 or 3 upcoming areas where it might be important, but it's not a deal breaker. You will probably get better stuff eventually anyway, so don't worry about it until you are really struggling.

wtf in Demon's Souls I was invaded again as soon as I started a level. The hit boxes are beyond horrible wtf? The guy had a two handed sword and I was to his side and still getting hit by him. Bulls***

Some of the weapons have a very big swing arc, but there are also times when lag makes you get hit when you shouldn't. I can't say for sure which it was without seeing it, but just keep it in mind.

Woohoo. Dark Souls 2 has been beaten. That last boss fight. Goddamn. Now for some grinding and murder and then its on to NG+

I'd guess lag then because most of his attacks were somewhat slow overhead downward strikes. Unfortunately I had the wrong shield equipped so after a couple blocks I was out of stamina and figured I could just side step his attacks. I got him down to half health at least. Don't really understand the point of being in body form if I will just be attacked constantly. I'll take my chances with the cling ring in soul form.

Any advice for the Vendrick battle ? Have the old giants souls. Can't seem to avoid his attacks though. And he hits big.

He's that undead king right? I had a pattern going where he had trouble hitting me, but I've only done it once, so my memory is hazy. There is a spot you can get where he has a harder time hitting you. Or maybe it just made it easier to dodge. I can't remember. But spend some time experimenting with positioning, like being near one leg vs the other, being a certain distance away, rolling at a specific time, baiting him into certain attacks. I'm sure you can get a grove going.

It's a long ass fight even with all the giant souls. I wasn't crazy about it. A long fight where you get killed quickly is no fun if you ask me. It's just tedious.
