Middle-Earth Shadow Of Mordor Discussion

I might pick this game up down the road when I see it cheap, but a few questions for you guys:

- After you beat the game, is there anything to do? Does the game totally end? Or can you keep going and finish off anything you didn't do?
- It seems there's designated hot spot areas. Do enemies respawn in an area? Or is that area cleared for good?
- Are there random small scale fights throughout the land?
- For any of you who beat the game, how long did it take? Did you focus mainly on the main quest or does that time also include you clearing out most stuff. In Fallout 3, I played that game for probably 40 hours clearing out random buildings, but the main quest could probably be beaten in less than half that time if you really just bee-lined the main quest

As you can see, I'm trying to gauge the content/replay value of this game. Thanks!

I'm just curious, I've done the Vendetta quests a couple of times, does the player whose death I have avenged get a notification? I thought I saw something pop up that indicated someone avenged my death but it was quick and I was in the middle of a battle and didn't get to read what it actually said. I got an achievement the first time I did it.

My 1 and only compliant about the game is that you could get dragged into a minor battle with a few Uurks and then you have 2 war-chiefs 30 orcs with a mixture of shields an spears and the numbers can keep growing, even if you manage to take down a large number of them, there is a steady stream of them coming towards you from a nearby fort, getting high on ledges or making a run for it are your best options when this happens.
That's part of what makes the game so great. You need to use tactics and plan so that you do not get swarmed. And yeah, sometimes things will not go as planned and things can get out of hand quickly and you will need to run. I've found that good recconasaince before engagement really pans out.

Yes. You can keep on playing to finish the leftovers a la GTA.

Warchiefs and captains can be cleared however, Orcs will always be there. You can clear an area of Orc grunts but if you stray too far away and return you'll find them replaced. But it is done in a manner that isn't really bothersome (at least to me). Plus, the fact that the fighting gameplay is just awesome and DELICIOUS will make you want to encounter as many enemies as you can!
Also, warchiefs and captains will remain dead until you A) Pass the time or B) You die.

- Are there random small scale fights throughout the land?
Yes. Random fights and then some. Sometimes Orc captains even hunt you down depending on the captain's classification. Like i once was hunted by this Orc with the nick name (The Hunter) and he primarily used spears -- Very cool it was.

For me, it took 20 hours to finish at 73% completion rate. I tried to do as much as I can with the side missions and artifacts/ithildin marks. I managed to do 80% now after collecting both and finishing the bow/dagger/sword quests. I will not bother with the mini challenges (for ex: hunt 5 flying creatures or rats).

What I really loved is the random encounters. I have had instances where I ran into 3 captains with their goons all together out in the wilderness. Usually, you'll find captains in forts or in a designated area. But it is completely normal to run into one while strolling outside. This game is just ace through and through! I'm genuinely excited for my second playthrough, that's how good this game is (to me at least!)

I think MosquitoSmasher got confused because at the beginning of the video, it said 1080p as of patch so he assumed it meant it got res upgrade. Gamespot probably meant 1080p upscaled for the X1. I didn't get a chance to watch the video until now but I can see the X1 version is a bit blurrier from my eyes.

Yep. They didn't say upscaled or anything...they had text saying..1080p with day one patch.

Ah well, resolution wise it's not a big deal. I was actually seeing my friend play it on X1 before seeing that Gamespot video. I already thought...''Wow...this is 720p?'' when i saw it on X1 at my friend's, but it eventually turned out to be 900p. Resolution wise barely any noticeable difference. Bit of a shame about low shadows and less foliage though. Definitely makes me 'affraid' for GTA V on X1 in those regards.

Thanks Rez! Much appreciated! I'll look into getting this game later in the year as your answers cover my concerns. I should be able to score this game for $40 during holiday deals.

i kinda hate the nemesis system.. it gives me no sense of satisfaction or progress! its constant rotation...

also nothing is more annoying then having 3 captains fight you at the same time.. while doing other missions.

Those are two things I would consider a plus in this game.

really? you enjoy having endless amount of enemies with no end game.. whats the point?

Absolutely although I'd disagree there is no end game. Fighting the orc army is the end game. I got this one or and brought him right up to warchief under my control. I then used him as my hit man to take out any warchief or captain I wanted, without me ever having to do anything. It's great fun.

I ran into 3 captains while doing a mission last night too. I spent the next hour luring them away from other orcs and picking them off. It was a rewarding feeling.

I think without the nemesis system, this game would feel like a lot of other open world games, meaning it wouldn't now hold a special place in my heart.

This game shouldn't be missed by anyone. Don't wait until it drops in price, we need to show these publishers/developers that we support good games. I can't believe I've already put in over 20 hours and I'm not even half way done.

I ran into an Orc captain who has my number. His Warchief didn't give me as much trouble as he did.

I like how They don't just appear there too. If you stick around, you can watch them walk in from some direction or another.

I think it's a great way to make you care about a situation where it would just be an endless procession of faceless enemies that just feel like AI. At least the Nemesis System adds a personality, as well as a feeling that you are part of a more existing world. The feeling of accomplishment/satisfaction comes because your enemy is unique and identifiable. It's understandable that A new captain would take the others place because it an army. One guy won't take out a whole army, but making it personal affords a more invested play session, imo.

Yes, running into 3 captains sucks, but I like that even if I smoke a ton of baddies, and if I don't pay attention to the combat situation, I can still be overwhelmed. Little by little, the life bar shrinks until the next thing you know- you are doing the little QTE to save you butt. Then it's run time!

I also really like that they have the strengths and weaknesses. Awesome way to "force" the player to think about how they need to approach a situation. Great stuff.

I'm low on dough, so I don't own the game (yet), but my Brother came to town, and he had it. Loved what I played. I feel bad because I didn't want him to leave because he'd take his game with him, lol, not because he's my brother ;)

Yep. I always scan an area for captains and mark them out onto the map before going in. Still get caught by surprise the odd time as well. Just adds to the whole game to have your detailed plan fall apart because a random captain turns up from a hunt at the worst moment.

i dont feel nemesis system adds personality at all.. all it has is weakness and strengths which are just randomly generated.

but yeah if you feel like it adds alot to the game then dont let me hamper it

I was baffled at one captain coming alive from death like 3 times, and I didn't even notice it in the last two instances. I be like, wait, didn't I kill this guy? And then I killed him with a combat takedown. Later when I hunted down a warchief, I accidentally killed some orc (didn't even know it was that captain), and the game suddenly states I killed that one - again! lol, fun stuff though.

The game is fun but I don't think I can sit on hours doing the same type of thing over and over again. More fun in short sessions for me personally.

It's weird to think that this game wasn't even close to being on my radar until the reviews came out, and now it may end up being my favorite game of the year. I hope not though, hopefully we get some great games this fall.

thinking about picking this up, hear the combat is too easy. is that the case?

Yes and no. You can easily get over run but one and one is easy enough. The combat is excellent though. Those execution moves..... Damn....

Theres a captain(now warchief) in my game that is an absolute beast. He's killed 3 other captains and a warchief. His stats are fvcking unbeleiveable. I'm not sure if his stats are a glitch or what. He's only killed me once, but he did it in like 4 seconds. He is invulnerable to everything but combat finishers, but good luck with that. Duel swords, he's basically a beefed up berserker, his swords do bleed damage and he has a damage modifier to boot. It's literally 2 hits, one hit takes 3/4 of my life, with no second chance.

I had a captain like that, pretty much invulnerable to everything and had fast regeneration. I ended up catching him by a campfire eventually and took him down with 2 arrows, one to the fire to make it go boom immediately followed by a shot to the back. It was a satisfying kill, but for awhile I had no idea how I was going to be able to kill him.

That's what makes this game sound so awesome. The fact that you can't hack away at every enemy but instead need to find some alternative means to dispatch him. And the combat looks very Batmanish makes me want it more. But I must control my impulsive nature and wait because there are some games coming soon that I want. I just hope I can continue to hold out.

This game is definitely worth playing, but you're not going to miss much if you wait for a price drop. It's certainly cool to be able to avenge the deaths of your friends list, but nothing essential.

Just picked this game up yesterday and it's heaps of fun, played about 4 hours and only got through a couple missions it's fun just taking on strongholds and getting onto a bridge and just slashing them off and throwing them off. Had a battle with 3 captains and it was freaking intense especially when all the orcs came into the fray too. The combat and stealth is super fun and i can't wait to unlock some certain combat abilities.
