Is this the game from that indie developer in The UK that had their office virtually wiped out in a flood?
Yep. It's good to see they haven't been stopped much. It was nice to see him in stage too; you could tell he was very appreciative about the opportunity to be given center stage like that, it looked like he was about to explode into tears of joy at any moment.
I'll be picking this game up for sure, it looks great.
If it were a Bioware-sized team, you'd get all that. But with 4 guys?
I guarantee there are going to be people who complain and gripe that the game doesn't have X or Y. I think it's really important to keep the tiny size of the dev team in mind. Four guys. We need to keep our expectations realistic. It's easy to get carried away in the grand scope, imagine the possibilities ... in reality, it's going to be limited in a hundred different ways. It has to be.
I agree 100%.
I'd be curious to see if this was still a four man team. Did they mention the current size of the team at the presser?
Still among the best indie games shown out there, but watching the vids, you can explore space and planets. You can dogfight and fight on the ground. Random generated type stuff.
But it has an empty feeling so far. I'm assuming the game will have missions, maybe an overarching storyline, character leveling etc......????
I don't think so. I could be wrong, but I think the game is pure sand box ala Minecraft.
Can anyone else confirm/deny?
Yeah perms death is intriguing. Only one shot at the game, it seems otherwise you start from square one?
A Gamespot live stage demo
I'm kind of speechless after watching that.
It is impressive.
I do have a concern though...with no real mission structure or specific objectives, I fear it may get repetitive and boring rather quickly. I know all the worlds are different, but if what you end up doing in those worlds is pretty much the same thing, then that will not be good.
It would be a shame if that happened.
Minecraft says hello.
Sure Minecraft has an end game now, and overall has vague objectives like to build a shelter and collect resources, but other than that, you are free to do whatever you want. This sounds very like that. Collect resources, improve your suit/ship, travel further... or don't. Fight... or don't. The thing I can't quite grasp is the concept of how the game is infinite. I don't see how this is possible given that hardware has finite resources. Surely the game can only expend so far before it hits some processing wall for example.
Never played it, or have a want to. but, doesn't minecraft revolve around the idea of building ? While the process may be the same it is the creation that keeps it interesting. That is not the case with No Mans Sky.
As for being infinite, not sure. With there being no load times and everything being seemless, I can only assume it uses the RAM in some clever way.
Yes, building is the core idea of Minecraft but you don't have to. Traveling seems to be the core idea of No Mans Sky, but again, you don't have to. Anyway.. your original comment was on "no real mission structure or specific objectives"
As I said... Minecraft has no real missions or objectives and in that regard is very similar to that the creator of No Mans Sky was trying to explain. It's just as nebulous a concept as as Minecraft seems to be and thats one of the biggest selling games in history.
There has to be some sort of dedicated servers here. The idea of everyone starting on the outer ring of a galaxy and being aware of each other, and potentially never finding each other can't really be supported without some kind of server infrastructure. This is probably an always online game as well, at least in the way Dark Souls is anyway.
I understand the explanation. I understand you play it how ever you want to play. My fear is it not having enough meat to it to sustain the sort of playtime a game like this warrants. Will their be enough cool random events. How far and varied are the weapons, abilities, ships and armour upgrades/creation. How big of an impact will trade routes have on your overall game universe.
When I think of something like Borderlands which had the ridiculous weapon counts, it sounded awesome. In reality though I found it rather weak. Most guns were very similar with small differences. Which in the end got boring and annoying. Now that was just one aspect of that game.
The scope of the game is just so massive. Is hard to comprehend how you fill this infinite world with constant interesting things to do.
