Cool user review from reddit on Megaton Rainfall PSVR

So as a kid I had this slew of games I'd play. Simple, mostly. Point and click adventures. Some puzzle solving games. But then there were a few special games that were so unique and cool that even though I never played them much, they still made a big impression on me.

One of those games was called "Magic Carpet". It was an odd FPS DOS game where you fly around an Aladdin type world shooting at strange creatures from your magic carpet. I never got gud at it, and never really learned to play the story, but everything about it imprinted itself on my mind. The music, the sounds, the graphics, the play-style. But I never thought I'd really come across another game like it, and it didn't bother me.

Then I found Megaton Rainfall. My mind has been exploding all night. It's so similar, while at the same time being completely new and different. You fly around as a sort of "super hero". More like a strange, cosmic entity. Your job is to save humans. But here's where this "new kind of nostalgia" comes into play.

This game has a VERY similar play-style to Magic Carpet, however, since it exists in 2017 instead of the 90s, it's NEXT LEVEL s***. I am able to fly all over the world, seamlessly, without load screens or animations. At a moment's notice I can climb beyond Earth's atmosphere, dash across its surface, and then dive back down wherever I please, going all the way to ground level to the point you can see plants and stuff. But it get's even crazier. You can fly to other planets. Seamlessly, and then dive down onto their surfaces, including gas giants like Jupiter. You can fly through Staturn's rings, either along the top or in them! You can get down to the surface level of the Sun. But it gets even crazier. You can explore other solar systems in the Milky Way. TONS OF THEM. Some have multiple stars, planets, moons. You can find amazing clusters of stars. You can park yourself on Azathoth's throne. BUT IT GET'S EVEN CRAZIER. You can leave the f***ing Milky Way, and drift out into the pure void of nothingness between the galaxies. You can travel to other galaxies. Dive into their turbulent clouds of stars and systems. Over and over, all over the place.

Sure, the planets get to be pretty similar as you explore more and more, but that's true to life to an extent. It doesn't dampen the mind-boggling effect it has on me. Outer space blows my mind, and now with VR, I can actually drift amongst the stars.

The thing about this is, it's basically me re-living my childhood but in the future. I'm playing Magic Carpet for the first time, except in this weird alternate reality I live in, instead of flying a magic carpet across earth, I'm flying myself across galaxies.

VR has so much in store for us, it's ridiculous. This game feels so huge. The thrill of zipping across city skylines, then blasting up into space, you can actually feel yourself rising out of the Earth's atmosphere. It's insane. If you're wanting a fun game that has some skillful arcade style gameplay, but also want to explore all of existence, get this game. Video games are fun to me again, this is great.

I concur with his conclusion, video games are fun and exciting again with stuff like this. No matter how good the visuals are, looking at a TV screen its difficult to top the feeling of being IN the game.

VR seems to be taking it up to the next level rather quickly, within a year. First it was just brief experiences that seemed crafted mostly just to show off VR capabilities, rather than to build a good game. Now we are getting full-length games that can stand on their own, as games. That's promising.

I didn't realize Doom VR wasn't looking all that good. I hadn't paid much attention to it. I'll probably take that one off my list. I think I'll take Thumper off, too. It looks/sounds intense, but I'm no good at rhythm games.

I'm going to add to my list Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and the Star Wars Battlefront VR game.

Do you play most of your VR games standing or seated?

Doom looks great to me? Good choices with until dawn(It's free atm) and star wars while short is pretty great.

Most games you can sit or stand, to me as a general rule if I'm using the moves, I stand. Standing seems to intensify immersion more too, but might increase chance of nausea.

Put some of the strapped weights on your arms and this would be a serious workout, looks pretty fun too

Anybody play the demo free PSVR "Demo Disc 2" download? I finally get what Moss is about, and I liked it a whole lot. So far, I've played through that, Rez Infinite, Thumper, and Job Simulator. All of those were pretty fun. Thumper is so weird, but in a good way. Job Simulator is very funny... It's really an odd feeling, playing Rez again after all this time, but this is clearly the way it was originally envisioned. It's like "ohhhhhh, this makes so much sense now!". To think that this thing started off as a Dreamcast game...

Full list, for anyone who's counting:
  • BattleZone
  • Dino Frontier
  • EVE: Valkyrie
  • Fantastic Contraption
  • Job Simulator
  • Moss
  • Raw Data
  • Rez Infinite
  • Starblood Arena
  • Star Child
  • The Persistence
  • Thumper
  • Tiny Trax

My gf really like Moss, but I haven't played it. She's really picky too so it must be something special. I played Raw Data, Star Child and they were both pretty decent. Haven't tried the others yet.

Abdiel (BB insider at era):

"PSVR sold out of what inventory we had at quite a few of our stores. The deals on it, and the continued demos we've been doing have helped make it that much more accessible to people. Not to mention the new big ticket games like Skyrim offering serious, long term experiences to dive into. We didn't have tons of inventory to start with though, Sony seemed to have set realistic expectations on it, and even once we sold out, it isn't like we had tons of people asking, only a few."

Posting this in both threads. This is such an incredible game in vr.

Pretty informative post. I tend to agree, some are worse than others for sure.

UK Black Friday data:

PSVR headset sales are huge this week, on a par with launch week (wk 41/2016) and this week is the equivalent of the past 18 weeks of PSVR sell-through.

As you may have heard, there were 1 million VR units shipped in Q3. Here's how that breaks down:

From interview with Eric Lempel, Head of PS Network, senior VP:

"The segment closed with CNBC asking Lempel about virtual reality and its impact on the company going forward, and he was pretty adamant that the PlayStation VR would continue to be a staple in the Sony lineup, noting that consumers are drawn to “big, immersive games” like Resident Evil 7 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR. Lempel went on to say that he thinks the company is “just scratching the surface” when it comes to virtual reality, which should be music to any PSVR owners ears."

Massive increase. I'm betting by this time next year PSVR will have 5 million sold at least

This holiday ought to put it over 2 million, although we'll have to wait until Sony releases their numbers in Jan. to know for sure.

I'm betting 4 million by the end of next year. Maybe that's a little conservative, but I don't see this market growing too rapidly.

I think Skyrim will continue to push units through the spring, then we have Doom this week too. I expect huge announcements at E3 too, either Fallout 3 or 4. I'm fine with either, I'd rather have 3 though.

I'd love to see Fallout 3 in VR. That would be worth replaying. Not 4. I couldn't even play that once. Although I guess that's coming to PSVR next year (?). All the crafting bulls*** in Fallout 4 really put me off.

Yeah it looks like 4 is coming no matter what I think. The crafting did get old but I still enjoyed it.

I have a hunch that Fallout 4 VR was held off for 1 year exclusivity with Microsoft. See comments from the Scorpio reveal. Whether or not that is still on the table at this point is anyone's guess.
