Sony and MS working on PS4.5 and XboxOne.5?

Huge pinch of salt but according to these guys source the PS4K will launch this year $399 (not set in stone). More power but not native 4k (obviously).
The interesting part to me is they say they've spoke to a dev who is developing a game specifically for the more powerful console. It will be shown at E3 and releasing Q2 2017.

I wonder if the updated consoles are more about VR than 4K?

Stable 1080p/60 with 4K movie playback/ streaming.

It could benefit the PSVR by using a downsampled resolution. This is what a lot of games on PCVR are doing. That's why the Rift games will be pushing 400 million pixels per second.
The resolution is 1200 × 2160 @90 fps = 233 million pixels per second.
Because of down sampling they're pushing nearly double the pixels.

Looks like Sony may beat Microsoft to the punch once again.

If I was MS I'd probably let Sony go first so that you can make sure that you have a more powerful revision and let them take some of the early hate.

I would be shocked if we see a new PS4 or Xbox this year. Most likely next. Unless PSVR is really struggling on the current box.... :(

Just a reminder for those who forgot what it was really like. High end cards were pulling +60fps at 4x times the resolution of the Xbox 360. Console makers were never packing $1000 worth of hardware into $300 machines.

360's GPU isn't on that list

The only way this won't kill either companies gaming brand is if BOTH release a upgraded console. This midish gen upgrade is telling me Sony plans on making this gen last longer then 5 years .
I now am going to have to trade up and get one.Not the new Xbox of course being I have a PC.

I still say this is a load of bs. Both consoles are selling great, and still have a long way to go to even get some good market saturation. Lots of people I know are still on last gen. 4k TVs aren't exactly in everyone's homes yet. I don't own one and won't for some time.

My guess would be both companies starting to look to next gen. I could see this gen not lasting as long as we thought as both consoles are pretty under-powered. Even then, games still look great and I don't like it but a steady 30fps is playable as long as it is steady.

We saw the slim versions of last gen consoles about 3-4 years after the original models released. Late 2016/early 2017 for new models is pretty believable.

Then those people can buy and/or stick to the original PS4. It sounds like the PS4.5 will simply be an option for people who want a better version of the PS4 -- similar to iPhone 6S vs. iPhone 6. The PS4 will more than likely be the cheaper option while the PS4.5 is $100-200 more expensive.

Not point for Sony to start next gen so early when the PS4 is selling great. If anything, this move will be extending the PS4 as a brand via two products instead of just one.

I'm sure MS got some word and/or hints about Sony doing this so I'm sure MS will respond with a "Xbox One.5" too -- if anything MS should have an easier time with this as they are already moving to an ecosystem push; the ability to play games across various Windows 10 devices.

Console gaming being "one box over 6+ years" is outdated in comparison to other modern tech. Making things "new model every 3-4 years" while still keeping the convenience of consoles there (no add-on parts, easy to plug in and play) will be brining in the best of both worlds in my opinion -- just as long as there's full and easy game compatibility + transferring.

I just though of something. Why buy an Xbox One.5 when the PS4 is already released??

Slim models, sure, but not ones that actually perform better. That's a whole different ballgame.

4K TV's are selling great...as fast if not faster than 1080p sets did initially.

Yes, they are pushing 4K at stores and why not as it is forward thinking and the cost has come down dramatically. Yet still the available 4K content is minimal and no way game devs need to push for 4K output when you have such a low % of homes with a capable TV set in their home...

when someone thinks there mobile 970m is the same as a desktop 970 I don't take much they say serious when it comes to tech talk... Anywayz I being a tech fan know 4k has been selling surprisingly well but I will play the lack of knowledge google game like you.

Consoles that run Triple A games in 4k won't be seen until 2020 at the earliest. You will likely be playing Hexic 4k in the next year or 2 but that is the best you will see. Even Val's links had at best a 50% saturation base of people with 4k TV's by 2020 and my links had the estimates even further down the road. It was hard enough to push HD onto people and consoles actually helped get those numbers up back then. 4k is a MUCH harder sell than 720p was because many people just don't see a difference unless they have 55" or larger sets and are sitting close enough. In fact, by the time 4k gets a foothold we will already be onto 8k or something.

Resolution is becoming more and more irrelevant. It gets to a point people don't notice or care.

Just like BR vs DVD.

DVDs come around and everyone is buying them like crazy. I think most people out there even have multiple DVD machines. A big jump in visual quality and all the digital perks that a tape cannot give (chapter select, bonus features, closed caption etc...). And that's despite people having PS2 and XB which played DVDs to start with. People still wanted dedicated DVD players.

BR comes out. The res, visuals and audio are better. But where's all the people running out and replacing their DVD machines? Some people have. I got a new BR home theatre set up. But I'm sure many people out there never bothered with a BR player.

Same goes for TVs. People went out and replaced their bog boxy CRT or projection TV with a 720p or 1080i or 1080p tv. Goes hand and hand with digital cable and lats gen game machines.

4k TVs are out and costs are reasonable. 4k TVs are $1,000-2,000 (CDN). Just a matter of time when they hit that $600-800 range. People had no problem spending $1,000+ on HD tvs, but where's all the people replacing them with a 4k $1,000+ TV?

I know nobody who is gabbing about 4k TVs or itching to replace their plasma or LED.

And where's all the 4k content? How much media and TV channels are 4k? There's tons of nicely priced TVs that can handle it, so where's all the media to catch up to the TVs?

Yep, I didn't buy Blu Ray until players were dirt cheap <$100. I've got a 47 inch TV and I sit pretty far back. I really don't have room for much bigger. I can barely tell the difference between BR and DVD. If you came in and swapped my BR disks would I notice? Maybe. Not for sure.

If people are demanding 4k gaming, why are PS4/X1s flying off the shelves? This gen doesn't even guarantee 1080p.

People here tend to confuse the die hards with the masses.

I'm surprised at the jump to 4k. TV tech has evolved faster than the media. I don't think cable HD tv is even 1080p yet. So I guess they are bypassing 1080p for 4k?

I have Rogers cable (Canada's biggest cable tv network), and HD tv is 1080i. And there is exactly one 4k channel. A 4k promotional channel called Channel 999, which is a mishmash of 4k programs and the occasional 4k sporting event.

I wonder how much more DX12 capable an updated X1 would be?

Would console games be similar to PC games with the base X1 being equivalent to low settings?

I never said it was the same. I simply said that people were making similar arguments back in 2005 about HD gaming and how "few people owned an HD TV". If anything, I would go as far as to say that there's more people who own a 4K TV now in comparison to the number of people who had an HDTV back in 2004/2005.

After seeing a decent amount of footage in 4K, I would take a 40" 4K TV.

I would have chosen the 65" 2+ years ago.
I will get a 4k tv eventually, but the difference isn't as perceptively close. 1080p is still a very sharp image. Diminishing returns and all that. I honestly would rather devs focus on newer, more acurate rendering and physics tech than 4k. It's an unnecessary sacrifice of power.

. New movies have been coming out all the time, like The Walk, which simply has to be experienced that way! Wow, quite a ride! .
Hahahhaa! At first I thought "The Walk" was that movie with Reese Witherspoon acting as a feral lost in the woods! Couldn't imagine that needing to be 3D. :D

Ha, no that probably doesn't really deserve a 3D version. The movie I was referring to, is the one where a Frenchman (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of tightrope walking across the twin towers in the USA. Very cool and realistic effects for a very true, yet amazing story. The movie has one of the most creative uses of 3D to engage storytelling that I have ever seen. Another interesting note, that there is also a VR experience for the movie.

If memory serves, I don't think the HDMI format used by both consoles can support 4k. But I get where you're coming from.

Not only that, if they did, they'd be catering to a vast minority. There simply isn't enough 4k screens in home to justify a mass market appeal in 2016.

Now, I'm off to google some numbers about 4k tv sales.

You're right, they cannot. They do not have HDMI 2.0 nor HDCP 2.2.
