Multi-Platform Star Wars: Battlefront, putting the fun back into online shooters.

I didn't like the beta much either. The game has faults that have been mentioned, but it is still just plain fun.

I mean, running around with a Star Wars blaster shooting people? Yeah. Sign me up.

I've been playing it on early access. Its very enjoyable. They've made a good tweaks since the beta as well. The weapon/gear unlock order is different now. Snipers have been moved to around level 30 (used to be 3). There are less turrets at the rebel base on Hoth as well. That uber blaster everyone used in the beta has been nerfed but it doesn't matter because there is already a new uber blaster that everyone is using.

Can't wait for this to come out NEXT WEEK! Only problem is I'm up to my eyes in Fallout 4. Still, I'll find some time to give this a go, and even if I don't it'll still be there when I'm ready for it.

Never heard of the game to be perfectly honest but I might as well make the most of EA Access (not that I don't already) and download it, I will give it a go on Sunday night when the Wife is away.

Didn't like the beta much, but downloading the EA Access trial. I'll test it on the weekend. Maybe the final game is noticeably better.

Game doesn't seem to faring too well in reviews.

I read the Gamespot review --7/10--and to me it sounds like a COD game. Poor maps, boring game modes for the most part, and an unlock system that isn't really worth anything outside of a few key items.

The game always looked like style over substance, and my very brief time with the BETA echoed that sentiment, and now reviews seem to be echoing it too.

The game is great. It really feels like Star Wars which is all I was hoping for. I think a 7/10 is a fair score. My biggest complaint is that there is only 4 maps. I know a new one is coming for free soon enough, but even then, 5 maps is pretty poor.

I love the game, it's got tight controls, great performance and is the best looking FPS on consoles so far, quite an accomplishment considering it's a multiplat.

The beta grew on me But I was concerned about longevity and then I like what i heard about the season pass plus I got a bunch of friends who are getting this so I ordered the Vader Bundle. 7/10 from GS is like a 9 elsewhere.

But its a multi-plat that doesn't have last gen in mind :)
The sooner the 3rd party/devs let last gen die the sooner this gens visuals improve.

I know I will eventually get bored of this, but so far it is just too much fun. I'm running across Hoth trying to get to a turret with laser fire everywhere and I'm hooked.

Oh hay! This comes out today! Can't wait to get home, rip this open, install the sheit out of it, and then play some Fallout 4.

I found Fallout to be seriously lacking in Star Wars content. It is almost like the game had nothing to do with Star Wars at all? :tounge:

The Force is certainly not strong with that one.

Anyone elses downloads seem to be faster these days? I bought TR, and it installed, literally, like in ten minutes. How'd it go for SWB?
Fallout 4 was surprisingly fast for me as well.

Yikes, game is getting crushed by the reviews. That is a bummer, such a waste.

Installed ready to go. Wasn't that hyped but found the Beta to be fun. It isn't going to be my go to mp game but will be great to play in between Halo and Battlefield for some mindless fun.

Sounds like wait for the next game from the reviews.
Yup, I have read a few now and it is a stinker. But I think they at least have the foundation for a new one now, so we could probably see a decent release in two years.

It's a save your money release now.

Any examples of these reviews? The game is tons of fun. I've been playing since Friday. Is it deep? Innovative? Setting the bar for future FPS games? Nope. It is just plain fun.

Also, the game works 100% out of the box, which should not give them any special credit but in today's world is a rare thing.

Sometimes, keeping things simple is ok. I've put 10 hours into it already and so far am far from bored. Will I be playing this for months and months? Probably not. Still I don't see how this is much different from the other generic shooters coming out.

Beneath all this grandeur, however, are shallow experiences. Maps look fantastic, yes, but they lack focused design. Endor's undergrowth lends cosmetic appeal, but not much cover. Hoth's barren fields impart a sense of distance, but few creative sight lines.

However, just as many of Battlefront's modes feel uninspired, or even poorly designed. Blast and Cargo are slight variations on team deathmatch and capture the flag, respectively, and are only exciting for several matches. After that, I had seen what felt like every possible scenario take place. Hero Hunt--in which a team of soldiers hunts down a Jedi, Sith, or bounty hunter--is imbalanced to the point of being frustrating. I grew tired of firing endless blaster rounds at Boba Fett right before he killed me with a wrist rocket--over, and over, and over. Battlefront has a depth of game modes, but only a few have much depth.

Battlefront's combat can be monotonous. By and large, it consists of medium range gunfights where opponents hold the trigger for two seconds and hope they're the one left standing. Getting shot from a distance, on the other hand, often meant sprinting in another direction, rather than seeking nearby cover and planning a counterattack. There's not much thought in modes outside of Walker Assault, and I seldom felt as if I was impacting battles, or as if my skill played any wider purpose.

Aside from a few standout items such as the jump jet--which lets you leap across the map and into the fray--these unlocks don't change how you play in the long run. Trait cards, which grant you perks like radar masking or explosive damage resistance, are the most valuable options, and acquiring them felt worthwhile. They changed how I thought about my equipment loadouts: how they played into the current game mode, how they would help me in the long run, and how I might consider maps in a different way. Approaching Trait cards in the progression list offered me more incentive to play. They're gems in an otherwise bland array of abilities.

Battlefront doesn't go much deeper than its ambitious surface appeal

That's just totally false and puzzling. The difference between fighting on the barren Hoth vs Endor is huge. On Hoth, you will be desperately searching for cover while Endor has tons of cover and hiding places.

The spawns on Walker Assault do kind of suck. It seems that people even in a few days seemed to figure them out. But of course anyone who has played a BF game know the fun of that. Hopefully they can tweak that along with the partner spawn to make it better. But yes, you can get spawn-owned at times if your team sucks.

The medium range engagement criticism is puzzling too. Having played the past Dark Forces games, blasters are meant to have a spread. You aren't supposed to snipe people with a short range gun from across the map like COD. Yeah at long range you just run fast and hope to not get shot. If people don't like it, that's fair, but I think they nailed the "feel" of Star Wars. Maybe many didn't play the old DF games back in the day. I will admit it is annoying at times to have someone just plug you from far away, knowing it was just dumb luck and not skill. Doesn't ruin the game though.

Some of the game modes are definitely fairly pointless. Honestly I'm going to play Walker Assault or Supremacy (a slightly more complex domination).

I'm just thinking people don't like the design choices made, which is fine. It doesn't make it a flawed game, maybe just not the game people were looking for. This isn't a try-hard eSport uber competitive game of skill. It is a casual game.
