The Nintendo Switch

Holiday will be interesting. Don't see the PS4 slowing down and the Scorpio plus Slim will see MS do well and by then the Switch will have games.

Several years?? Like 2? 3? Cause the last release was the Pro

Or 3 years ago? Cause I believe the PS4 did 1M in the US alone?

If this thing did 1 million in the US Nintendo would tell you just as Sony did like 24 hours later but Nintendo have not done so.

Someone across from me on the subway right now is using a Switch.

Glad i didn't get one at launch. Not a fan of screen protectors and if i scratched it i'd go crazy. Nintendo really knows how to tap into that inner OCD with their fisher price console quality.

I'll wait for the felt revision and hopefully a $50 price cut. Yeah, how hard is that? Put some felt inside the thing, cause ya know.. maybe it will scratch sliding it in their 12 times a day with no protection? That's like sticking your junk in a hooker and not expecting to get aids.

Zelda might be the best thing going in gaming but it ain't worth dropping $300 on shoddy design. Why can't these companies ever do things right at launch? FOH.

I've got a co-worker who just got one. He only plays Nintendo and won't even buy any Apple products (though that's all he uses outside of work) after Jobs left. Even he has big problems with the left joy-con and how small the controllers are.

I can understand the shell scratching. Anytime you have something lodge into a input and you yank it out, there's going to be scratch marks on plastic. I'm sure everyone has had old Genesis or SNES games getting the plastic shell with some marks.

However, the built quality must cheap because a problem some gamers are having is the actual screen is scratching too, and some people are even getting dead pixels on day one.

Any kind of smart phone or tablet has pretty solid screens. It takes a lot to make marks on it.... drop it at the wrong angle or you accidentally sit on it. If you never drop it, there's a good chance (like myself) of it never scratching the screen in any way. I think I've had 5 cell phones in my life and not one ever got dead pixels or a scratched screen, and like everyone I've dropped them on the ground. Even that grey Nokia brick (which everyone had in 1999) took a beating with that crappy monochrome Gameboy-ish screen and was still fine.

The plastic shells get dinged up sometimes, but never the screen.

That should be a given. Anyone seeing the videos since reveal knows the joycons are tiny. And also lack complete sets of functionality, since it's missing an analog stick and buttons.

Well according to the guy in the video the problem is actually caused by the console itself

Oh damn. Switch Neon is available via Prime Now for me. Damn you guys. Resisting is getting tougher by the minute.

Edit: OK, just ordered Zelda for Wii U. Can't justify the cost to upgrade to the Switch considering Scorpio is coming out this year. That was a close call though.

Make note your gamer profile and game saves are tied to your system, so if it breaks down and you want to exchange it for a new one or buy a new one, you can't get your game saves back.

In order to do so, you either have to make sure you sign out from the broken system before returning it. So when you get a replacement, you can sign in.

Same thing goes for trying to sign in at a friend's system. You have to ensure you sign out of your system first, before meeting your friend and signing into his.

Your other recourse is to call Nintendo customer service.

Oblong's One Week Switch Mini-Review

+ Best graphics, controls, and ease of use I have ever seen in portable gaming.
+ Zelda is a game like no other, it truly stands on its own in a sea of repeating efforts.
+ Snipperclips has been a fun family game to break up the Zelda marathons.
+ Setup was a snap including hardware, Nintendo accounts, Mii's, game installs.
+ Controls have been easy to adapt to and responsive (I know others have had issues, not myself).
+ Pro controller better than any controller except for the Xbox Elite (which is still miles better)
+ I am surprised to find that I am enjoying playing undocked in small screen as much as on my 65" TV.

In fact the last point is likely the reason I will keep this console after I've run through Zelda/Mario. I actually never owned a DS so my last bout with portable gaming was a Gameboy. The phone has been acceptable mobile gaming but there is no comparison to being able to play Zelda on the go as compared to Boom Beach or Clash Royale.

- The Switch causes my TV to automatically change to the console source when I am watching TV. It's like the sleep mode isn't fully asleep. This means I can only charge my Switch when I am not using my TV (not a huge problem, I have to sleep sometime, but annoying nonetheless)
- Freaked out about scratching my screen because of the dock design or breaking a Joy-Con by putting it together wrong. Bad design!
- Pricey peripherals
- Never could find a Special/Master Edition of Zelda at retail
- Tabletop mode is hampered by a poor kickstand - no degrees of setting, not large enough to fully support the Switch on soft surfaces like a bed.
- Controller configurations don't follow industry norms and not always able to modify settings in all games.
- Not all features are ready (online, Netflix?, browser?)

While I am definitely still in the honeymoon period I can't give the console an "AAA" rating. It's been great fun and I think there is much potential to be realized. Nor can I say I've been troubled some of the widely publicized issues. 83/100 would be my early score but the needle could still easily move 10 points up/down as Nintendo evolves the platform throughout the course of the coming year.
