Inside Xbox: May 7th, 8:00 PST

Mostly agree. I think their messaging was wrong. Everyone was hyped to see ‘next-gen gameplay.’ Bad choice of games for that!

After watching all the trailers a few times, I’m more excited about some of them. But the show itself was too much hype and too misleading. All eyes on Sony now, but I also think this will push the MS July show to really be a showcase of what they have lines up.

Hopefully they learn from this, I think one reason they went with this format is because this is what they've been doing at E3 for the last couple of years and they think it works. It's easier to just put a bunch of 2 minute highly edited trailers together than to give each game time to show what it really is. That's why personally I've found their last couple of E3's to be a forgettable mess, people brag about quantity but they don't worry about quality.

I’m hoping come July the COVID restrictions will be eased and MS can put on a better show that isn’t streamed from living rooms. As much as want to see more games, If it means waiting a a bit longer for a show we’re used to seeing at E3, I think they’d be better off waiting.

Yeah a show where they are all at the same location even without an audience would just come across better but of course if that can't be done I completely understand, safety first.

I think that the main misstep for me was them trying to show next-gen at 30fps, while already claiming that next-gen is more 60fps and EVEN 120fps! Dirt is confirmed 120fps, so they premier the game at 30fps?

Other than that, the games looked pretty good to OK, with Assassin's Creed being the worst, with no gameplay perspective and 30fps, even in its native stream. They should have demanded more from Ubi for the exclusive sponsorship!

I think Colt Eastwood's video on it was pretty good, from a couple days ago. I agree with most if his takes. How much better does Bright Memory look at 60fps? This was basically developed by 1 person? WTF!? Is this a sign of things to come?

Why? There was nothing wrong on the presentation front. The issues were decision making, messaging, under delivering. Same as the last 5 E3s then.

Dirt is confirmed to have a 120fps option it's not just that by default, clearly it's going to sacrifice visuals to get there and that's totally fine, PC players that brag about framerates often leave out that most of them have to cut back on visual features and resolution to get it.

Honestly the framerate had nothing to do with it the way the show was perceived, most people were mad because we barely saw any gameplay yet this was made to sound as if it was going to show us what XSX was going to be capable of. It was just a poor choice on MS's part to not only rush this stuff out a month earlier than it normally would have been but to also choose to showcase games made by mostly small studios. That game "Medium" a few of the guys here are impressed with only showed about 8 seconds of gameplay and it was all cut up so you couldn't focus on anything for too long, all she was doing was walking or in one scene running by herself, nothing else was happening and honestly it didn't really look much better than what we have now, hell it still had s***ty white toothpicks for rain :(

I have no doubt the console is capable of much more than this, the event was just ill conceived from the beginning, I'm sure they'll learn and do a better job next time. Hopefully the whole industry learns from this and stops advertising "gameplay trailers" that only show gameplay for about 10% of the trailers length, most companies do this and it needs to stop.

No, nothing wrong with premiering next-gen 4K/60 and 4K/120 games at 30fps. OK...

Also, their whole "sizzle reel" that they always use for their E3 recap was done again by MS, and this was actually the first exposure to these games that I caught on Thursday. I cannot stress enough how much I wanna punch whoever greenlights these things.(Edit: re: a gentle smack with a wet glove) So cheesy! Microsoft Xbox team needs to fire their video game presentation producers and start fresh IMMEDIATELY! Their montages are stupid! It always feels like an out of touch dad trying to be "fire". Just the spirit of the game and/or gameplay, plz!

Agreed. The presentation itself was not bad. Nor were the games shown. Where alot of people took issue with was the messaging of WHAT the show would be. Both Head of xbox marketing and AC: Valhalla Creative director acknowledged this and apologized. Both knew that they mislead fans of what would be shown at this event.

I agree with everything except for the framerate. The game runs 4K/120. I don't care if that's just a MODE. They showed it at 30fps, all of it. This is a dumb move.

Other than that, yeah I don't know why they showed these games first. They weren't bad, but just an odd choice.

One thing the should of done was slow down some of the editing. They were chopped with an exceedingly fast pace. Still though, we saw gameplay and what we saw looked amazing. Games for next gen just feel different from any other gen I can remember. They felt like movies IMO.

Apologized, lol. They knew exactly what they were doing.

Which falls under decision making.

Yeah, not disagreeing with that part at all.

It's not the end of the world, either. I think that ppl just expect more from Microsoft. I think that just about sums everything up, actually.

People expect them to deliver what they promise. Something they haven''t managed to do for a long time now. It is bulls*** PR with them, they are turning into EA.

I don't think they are being purposefully deceptive. I just thing they are disconnected, and lack a singular vision. I know these are tough times with COVID, but let's be fair. Zoom (or Teams, in their case) the F out of it right now, and get in the same page! One message, Microsoft!!! One message...

That said, I'm sure they will do better in July. They just need to be as transparent in their reveals as they claim to be with their Tweets. Get everyone on the same page, and it won't be a problem. I know these Thurs vids were 3rd party vids, but they don't have to show anything that doesn't fit with their vision, either. That stupid 'sizzle reel' was all theirs, too.

They didn't say 4k/120 they just said a 120fps option. I'm sure resolution is one of the things that will be sacrificed to make that happen.

Yeah a 60fps show would have been better but I don't think that's why so many people felt upset or underwhelmed.

This has been an issue for years with game trailers, especially those advertised as "gameplay" and I hope gaming studios stop doing it, it makes it hard for us to appreciate how things look one way or the other.

It is purposely deceptive. Gamers ask for gameplay. Xbox makes hypes up they are giving us gameplay. Show end ends with very little gameplay, none of which is presented as gameplay.

How is that not on purpose?

Same as gamers ask for new big exclusive IPs. Xbox starts hyping up games games games. Show ends with no new big exclsive IPs and just got paccked with indies. How is that not on purpose?

In both cases you have the main man Phil Spencer doing the hyping.

No, Dirt 5 will run in 4K @ 120fps. I didn't know that until I watched the Colt Eastwood video that I already posted. Edit: looking for clarification elsewhere on that.

I don't know why he would purposefully want to upset gamers, but I'm not buying that at all because it defies logic. I'm sticking with incompetent on messaging. Phil seems too genuine to me to be the purposefully deceptive type, anyway. Like I said, it would actually defy logic to do so... But you can keep all your spite. If he were a different person in interviews, I might understand.

The quote says "4k 60fps but there is also an option for a 120fps mode" that doesn't mean it's 4K 120fps, if that were the case they'd just offer that. It's not going to be 4K 120fps I think you are misunderstanding. If it's something Eastwood says in his video he's wrong, as he is about many other things a lot of the time.

Yeah, I actually just changed the source for the 1 min that you quoted me after realizing my original link was a message board posting, but yeah, I heard it on that video, so maybe he misspoke.

Again Agreed. Me being cynical, they were fine until the criticisms came in. Then all they could do was take it on the chin and apologize. I sometime think the whole xbox department after the 360 era was run on incompetence and PR speak.

It seems like its not definitive at what resolution it will run at 120 fps but the overall consensus is that it will be 1080p or using a dynamic resolution which is still an achievement on consoles.

Yeah, 4K/120Hz seemed too good to be true. I wouldn't exactly expect Codemasters to push a launch game that hard, either.

On aside, I wonder how many people have tried 120Hz mode on console yet. I know my projector can handle it, but I haven't seen it available through X1X. I'll have to check that out sometime.

I don't think we're will ever see 4k 120, lol. Not without it looking like a ps2 game. Maybe we will see some crazy Machine Learning sfuff

That and some of us actually like games and want to see what is coming without being so self-absorbed to try dictating what that looks like.

That's actually a pretty valid point, too.

My own question of his judgment is more like Dude, this is YOUR console launch! Show your own sh!t first!... I guess maybe that can also be looked at like this is the opening act.
