Assassin’s Creed IV: Avast ye lubbers, the Black Flag is officially flown

I've seen enough to know I will like it. Seems like it would have been better served being a new IP instead of another AC. Come one Ubi, pirate IP!

Definitely picking this up, but waiting for the next gen version.

Played the PS3 version for a couple of hours. The visuals are good. There are some things to note, though. They definitely skimped on animation frames for certain jumping / climbing actions. It varies, but it's either not noticeable or glaringly obvious. The more common animations look mostly untouched, but the animation completes faster than in previous games. I'm not complaining, though, because the old climbing animations just took too long. The combat animations definitely took a hit, as sometimes they just look silly. There's also the previously mentioned AA issue with the PS3 version, but unless you're a graphics whooorrrrre, you really won't notice while playing. As to the framerate... it's surprisingly consistent. There are definitely some dips in Havana, but it never gets to the point of being unplayable.

As to the game itself, it's a blast. Definitely the most fun I've had with an AC game since Brotherhood, but I can definitely see this one becoming my favorite of the franchise if the treasure hunting and other pirate-related activities stay fun. Sailing works well, you can toggle how many sails are in use to adjust your speed. The slower you go, the faster you turn. Naval combat is a lot of fun. Aiming / firing works by holding L1 to bring up the firing arc, Right stick to aim, and then pressing R1 to let loose. Of course, you have to do this while steering your ship. You'd think it would get confusing, but it all feels very natural. You don't ever find yourself trying to remember controls in the middle of battle. Again, I'm only a few hours in, but it's a lot of fun. I wish they went to the pirate theme sooner.

Is the enemy AI still atrocious?

Alright. Haven't played an Assassin's creed since the first one. If the target ps4 buy 2 get 1 free deal is happening in my area, I'm going to go for it. Along with killzone and fifa.

Thinking about getting this one. Should I play through ac3 first?

so I guess the PS4 version is getting the same score as this gen versions?...if so...wtf.

Reviews...so last gen. Anyway makes sense if you care about those sort of thing. If you go into it with expectations of it being last gen or new gen and both offer about what you would expect in that regard, the scores should be the same. Actually, judging by how it looks, you'd think last gen would score a bit higher.

I thought I was going to be disappointed with the graphics after having seen it on PC and played some of it on PS4. Nope. Looks remarkable on the 360. Helps to not have it displayed side by side with a next gen version, of course, but still looks great.

have you played any of the assassins creed games? ac3 is definitely weaker than the other games but not as bad as some make it out to be.

AC3 was one of my favorite games of the generation. I really enjoyed the story and particularly the side story about building up your homestead.

That's fine. But it was very much a love it / hate it type of game. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. I'll admit, playing as Haytham was awesome. I would have liked to spend the entire game playing as him. But at least for me, after that, it went downhill quick.

Other than the beginning, it was one of my favorites as well. I don't understand all the hate for the game.

LOL! I spent about an hour just exploring Havana... by which I mean synchronizing viewpoints and murdering every guard in sight. They literally cannot do a thing against you. As always, counter-kill = instant win. I mean, they give you a pop-up icon prompt for both counter kills and guard breaks. They're practically begging you to put the stupid AI out of its misery. But it doesn't change the fact that the game is so much fun. Also, I collected my first sea shanty! Yay!

The stories are only very loosely connected as far as I know. So if you want to get right into AC4 and are doubting if you should because you might not be able to follow the story, don't worry about that at all. However, I thought AC3 was great. Really took the AC franchise to the next level IMO.

So I'm really getting into the meat of ACIV now, and I'm in love with this game. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the whaling. Even when it's just a shark, it's still a pretty barbaric thing (regardless of how toned down it is) to depict. I'm perfectly fine with the way hunting was done in this game (the Far Cry 3 method), but I think repeatedly harpooning sea creatures is in bad taste, even if it is historically accurate. :p

The next gen version isn't too much of a step up visually from the current gen version. Saw a comparison video on YT. Waiting for a x1 and ps4 version comparison now and the ensuing endless dissections and arguments as to which looks better.

Not a slight on you at all, but that made me laugh :) only because I can picture some people being "we want more historically accurate gameplay!!..ok wait.. not that historically accurate", and then PETA throwing fits, etc. How often is the whaling?

And how is the story? Polygon's video review pretty much summed it down to having much better gameplay, but that the story was lacking

Yeah, I didn't want to come off as a tree-hugger or anything, I'm not. I just think whaling is exceptionally cruel. And it's not constantly present in the game or anything, but there are icons on the map of harpooning spots. The downside is you need to do it from time to time for crafting / upgrade materials. That's the part that annoys me a bit. It's just that you have to harpoon the whale / shark four or five times before you "catch it" and in the meantime, it struggles more and more and the blood is filling the water around you.

I'm only on Sequence 4, but it gets the job done, I suppose. It's not particularly memorable, but it's been the gameplay that's been keeping me playing. This is definitely the best pirate game I've played in a loooooong time.

Has anybody been playing this on PC ? How is it performance wise compared to AC3 ?

Yeah I hear ya, I generally don't think too much about that aspect though, because it is fiction in a sense but I can see why it may be too much for sometimes. Sucks that it's somewhat mandatory instead of being an entirely optional feature.

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus that I have read thus far

Man I hate that they tacked on Assassins Creed to what otherwise is an awesome pirate game.

My god, it's like every ending gets worse since the first. At least there were no huge cliffhangers. Cool game either way.

I was just thinking this yesterday. If they removed the parts that require a lot of stealth, this would have been an excellent standalone pirate game. I understand why they wanted the AC name recognition to go along with it, though.
