Bonus Round: Time up for Xbox one?

There's no way I'd count MS out or under-estimate them. This is the company that reached parity with the market dominator last generation -- stole a huge chunk of their market and cut their smug dominance right out from under them (with cooperation from Sony, of course). MS has made some blunders, but they've also shown that they are pretty quick to correct course when they need to. And let's not forget their deep, deep pockets. They can shovel money at the problem in a way Sony can never do. They also seem to have their pulse on the dudebro online shooter crowd (Gears, Halo, Titanfall), which is a powerful sales advantage, once the more casual gamers get plugged in. So I wouldn't underestimate them at all. They are a powerful competitor and will not sit by idly by while Sony runs away with the crown.

Maybe the title of the video is more of a "time's up" for Xbox one in its current form. The one that is $100 more expensive and forces you to have Kinect.

The big long term problem for MS though will be game performance. Even if that match Sony on price, which I doubt will ever happen because Sony will just drop their's, MS is still stuck with a Radeon 7790 and DDR3 in their box while their competition has a Radeon 7860 and GDDR5 memory.

Where were the Wii U doom and gloom headlies everywhere in its first so many months? Hell over a year later and has been trampled by PS4 and X1 not far behind. Fukk Pachter and others,X1 will do phenomenal as is through the generation.

There have been many doom and gloom articles and shows like this about the Wii U.
But it does seem like the heat has been directed towards Microsoft lately.

4 months in?

Well the gap between ps2 and the original xbox was even wider than that technically., and the ps2 destroyed the xbox in sales. Not saying that will happen here but its not a big long term problem for MS, the ps2, and even ps3 are prime examples of losing multiplatform battles and still doing well.

All they need to do is take drastic measures to lower the price and drop kinect, and pump out the exclusives. Simple.

I don't think MS is every going to pull Kinect out of the box. The most likely scenario, if they did anything, would be they just drop the price and eat the cost of kinect for a while.

Hopefully they can start pumping out some titles that show why its worth having. I would use mine for gaming if they would give me something to play with it. That Kinect Sport Demo was really impressive.

Does anyone actually care what Pachter says? This guy is the equivalent of a weather man. He can try to predict all he wants, but ultimately, he doesn't know s***. He's been disproved so much it isn't funny.

Another thing is, the X1 is only 4 months old. How is it that time is running out for it?. The PS3 was getting murdered in sales, and it took forever for it to catch up to the Xbox360, but 8 years later it just about caught up in sales. The Xbox One will be fine. It'll see a price drop, no doubt around the holidays, and with some strong exclusives coming, it'll sell really well.

people like Pachter are completely irrelevant, but he has to come out with conspiracy theories, because that's his job. By the way, who pays Pachter for his uselessness anyway?.

As far as Kinect goes, again, The X1 has only been out for 4 months. The Kinect will see some cool games released for it in the future that make it worth owning, not to mention updates that will no doubt improve its functionality. Microsoft is right to not stand down on packaging in the Kinect with every X1. Its obviously part of their vision for the future of the console, and they should stick to their guns.

You think he is going to give out his legit information for free on the bonus round?

This is just his opinion.

I'm no market analyst  But I think the best thing Microsoft could do is slash $100 off the system at E3.

Most likely won't happen. But is there one legitimate reason why this console should be $100 more than their competition?

My Xone has cloud power :)

I think MS should keep the Kinect but drop the price. They should've started out at $399 w/ Kinect to differentiate themselves from the PS4. "Look, we know we have weaker hardware but we also have Kinect bundled in to make up for it."

to be honest Patcher himself said the majority of the time he's wrong it's his job basically to guess and he knows 97 percent of the time he may not be right but sometimes he's on fire with some of the things he says.

I'm sure most won't agree with me, but to me it seems it was pretty arrogant of Microsoft to include the Kinect 2.0 when only 1/3 of the 360 user base actually showed interest in Kinect and then priced it at $499 when the more powerful hardware was $100 cheaper and expect it to outsell the competition.

but then again, I don't know whether to call that arrogance or incompetency.

I mean, imagine If the xb1 was launched with multiple skus, one being with a price point of $374.99-$399 with a no Kinect and a 2TB harddrive, and the Xbox's current game line-up?

It would have been killer

Really ?

There is already some evidence of this...

You hit the nail on the head. They have a serious image problem. Charging more money for weaker hardware will do that to you.

The video is very interesting. I didn't realize that this whole forced Kinect/DRM/Online-check-in business was all Don Mattrick's doing and that his ultimate goal was really to get us all using Skype. Makes sense. I'm glad he got kicked out.

Because these guys know what they're talking about, right?

Wrong. As analysts, hey're great guessers, but they only think skin-deep. Their discussions are no more meaningful than what you find at gaf.

I'll use Twitch on Xbox as an example. The Twitch app takes resources, and it's a universal app - meaning it runs with every game, exactly the same way. It runs far better on the X1 compared to the PS4 because of the system architecture and multiple OS structure. Are there sacrifices in resolution for games in order to accomplish this? Yes, but if you think resolution is everything, I bet you also believe Monster HDMI cables are crucial for getting the best picture quality.

What MS failed at was getting this message across simply and easily. They simply said, "Hey, it's going to be great - trust us." That's not going to work in the marketplace of one-liners and memes.

Fortunately for Microsoft, the message is being told properly now, and it's just a matter of time before that message becomes crystal clear.

wow.

It isn't arrogance or incompetency. It is a business plan. It is a vision.

Your multiple Sku comment was funny though. Might help if Kinect could actually save $100+. All things we have seen point to around a $75 mark up. That is the price of a game, nearly. Oddly enough MS are offering free games with bundles, but nobody takes that cost in to account.

a business plan can be arrogant or incompetent.

The Sony's business plan with the ps3 when it launch was based on arrogance. People will work two jobs, yada yada yada.

Microsoft had their Kinect sales, arrogance or incompetence led to packing it in.

Have you heard MS say anything like that ? Nope.

Business sense led to them packing it. Come on, 20 million units sold of an expensive, non-essential Peripheral. Of course it got bundled. Guess what, Sony was planning to do the same ;)

Nope, they haven't. That's why it could be incompetence.

And you're right, Sony was planning on doing the same, they wised up.

And exactly, the non-essential peripheral, which is still non-essential in a lot of people's eyes including the majority of the 360's user base, would have sold fine without it being packed in.

People want to stream themselves, or make shows or whatnot for twitch? They could have gone out and bought Kinect.
It's going to be needed for the AR/VR glasses? Have to go out and buy it.

Gaming is non-essential, does that mean MS and Sony should just stop making hardware and games ?

They will pull it out, save that quote.

They kept it in because they thought it would propel them in a "iphone" like way, and now that it isn't they will do everything they possibly can to try to up their sales until they eventually give up on that.

(if things continue as are)

If they keep losing out to sony in this way though, I expect one of two possible things

1. They have a new box ready sooner than later (2017)
2. They end up giving up on the xbox brand in this manner.

I think the Wii U doom and gloom is ridiculous. Even to this point but i can still understand the doubt. The Xbox One doom and gloom? It's absolutely baffling. This is Microsoft we're talking about. You know, the company that consistently puts out the biggest blockbuster games this industry has to offer. We're in good hands.
