I'm not bothered by this as I was only level 6. I understand their reasoning. Not to mention, it was a beta and no promises were ever made to keep character.
Yeah, I already figured the characters would be deleted, because things change after a beta. I actually hope they slow down the leveling in the full game. During the beta, if you played through the story missions, and the strike mission, you should have ended up at level 6. Play a couple hours in the explore mission, and you would hit level 8. So you could basically almost reach the halfway point to max level on the first planet in the game. I don't want to reach max level in a weekend, that would be lame for an rpg.
The soft max is lvl 20. But how I understand it when you start getting "Light" armor, you can go to lvl 29.
Agreed, it didn't take long at all to level up in the beta either. In the beta, you would go up a level or more in each mission.
Me too. I will be let down if I hit level 20 in a couple days. Its Bungies first rpg, God I hope they don't mess this up.
Hopefully they balance it out though. Enemies in Borderlands 2 kept regenerating health were annoying and if you didn't have orange guns it was really hard to fight raid bosses.

Level 20 is not the definitive level cap, there will be light levels after lvl 20.
I got the impression that there were levels after 20, but things like leveling up armor or weapons for example beyond 20....but that the highest actual number is 20?
Normal level cap is 20, when you get Light armor you are supposed to be able to level to 29. Im not sure how Light leveling will be done. I don't know if you have to collect Orbs of Light to level, or if it will be just like normal leveling. There is a video posted above that shows a level 29 Titan with Light armor, if you are curious.
Motes of light are used to buy high level gear. Some gear will have a light level. This is added to you level. So you could have three items that give you 2 light each and you would.be level 26. The higher level you are, the more damage you deal to higher level badies.
