MS’s strategy and messaging is losing me. And I have been with them through thick and thin for 20 years. Xbox Series X feels to me as almost a console they don’t want you to buy. Other than pure specs I see no reason why....and I have been looking for one. Sure Game Pass is great...but as Phil says that can be played anywhere. Next gen, last gen, mobile, PC....great. But you don’t need a Xbox Series X for that and if it’s a loss leader or the margins are so small then MS maybe really doesn’t want you to buy one.

As for the Xbox Series X itself I think the 120 FPS thing is as much marketing as it’s improved gameplay. Since MS is embracing cross gen so much then that’s the value proposition and where all that power is going. Push the sane games harder with some graphical tweaks. Basically what we got with Xbox One X. Color me not impressed.

And speaking of Xbox One X I think it’s garbage how they handled that. Basically thrown away after marketing it as the best place to play. And I think the reason they did that is I suspect Xbox One X will punch harder than they like in this cross gen space. I believe in scaling like PCs do but having a closer little brother seemed easier to me. Not having one console at 1.3TF and the other at 12.1.

"We want people to feel like they're a member of Xbox. And that membership in Xbox isn't about one device, it can be multiple devices.

I want to have a great experience on the television and I think Xbox Series X is absolutely going to deliver that and I'm incredibly excited by the lineup of games that we're building, but it is a fundamental difference than the traditional console war as people talk about.

'How many consoles do I sell versus how many consoles does another company sell' - Sony or Nintendo or other companies back in the day - we're just not...that's not our approach."

If [the traditional console war] was our approach, we wouldn't put our games on PC, we wouldn't put our games on Xbox One, we wouldn't do xCloud and allow people to play games on their phones.

And I'm not disparaging someone else's approach, but when I talk to fans and customers, what I say is when you're a member of Xbox, we want to build the experience around you."

When you think about it, it sounds a lot like a 3rd party developer developing the same game for every platform other than the PlayStation and Nintendo's console.

it kinda does, but it sounds like they’re trying to reach markets no one else is in (ie India and third world countries), when you think of it. PlayStation is sold in more than double the amount of countries that Xbox is sold. He’ll they’re in China, they, PlayStation and Nintendo are struggling to get a grasp there.

I really don’t care of all this future talk, we hardcore gamers know of what’s to come, even if we don’t we know each platform has plenty of studios working on at least one game and some up to four projects.

A third party publisher with very few games.

Philosophically I’m aligned with Xbox’s current vision. Gaming should be more accessible and affordable. You should be able to game on the device of your choice and take your games with you. Backward compatibility should be a given. Artificial walls like cross play between platforms should come down. Xbox has led on all of that. PlayStation only believes in that to the extent they are forced to. However I want a glimpse of next gen. Xbox Series X is not giving me any of that. It’s a hope and a promise....a couple of years from now. The only glimmer was Forza and a couple of BS trailers for State of Decay 3 and Avowed. I thought Xbox was past that....announcing games way to early with a trailer not representative of the final product but they did that.....again. And it showed despite all of the new studios, Xbox has a weak bench heading into launch.

I want to see next gen too, from both companies, but we definitely seem to be a while away from that for whatever reason. Like many have said it is the most underwhelming lead up to a new generation.

That is kind of an interesting angle Shaun brought up.

What if Microsoft didn't make hardware at all and was just a games publisher? Where you rank them?

Forza/Horizon are two of my favorite series, but kind of overlap a little.

I loved Halo until Reach. And 343i hasnt made a great one yet.

Gears 4 was almost good, 5 was good. Solid if played out series.

Sea of Thieves, I've heard great things as they eventually added content. I'm a single player type gamer though.

State of Decay 2 is a lot of fun, though janky.

Quantum Break was ok. Not Remefy's best.

Minecraft is huge. But I've never gotten into it. Plus its on everything.

Crackdown 3 is better than either of the previous games. But still not great.

Well, I wouldn't mind, but I would want GP, their controller, the beast console, Ori as well, but I hope it never happens as it would make Sony the main driver of evolution in tech and competition is best for everyone to push things forward.

When I was stuck with horrible internet at the start of this gen, MS straight up told me their console wasn't for me...stick with the 360.

Now that issue has been resolved, I have yet to see any reason to throw down the $ for the console either. Their recent game show killed off any desire to buy the system at all. I was hoping to pick up all of the X1 games I've missed out on due to poor internet, but their show needed something more and it didn't happen. I was hoping to be wowed by the new Halo like many of us were at E3 nearly 20 years ago, and I was in disbelief of what was shown. So much disappointment for it and the idea of no XSX exclusives taking advantage of the console killed it for me.

As for the 120fps stuff...just ridiculous nonsense most of us won't have any use for and won't be able to take advantage of anyway. It's just wasted resources IMO. Both consoles seemingly have terrible launch lineups so far. I wish they'd delay both launches by a year and give people an actual reason to upgrade.

I think they'd do a lot better as a game publisher only. I would rank them behind Ubisoft (they make A LOT of games I love each gen, so hush) so, second or third on my list.

There's no reason to upgrade my gaming PC either... other than the specs.

Specs are a big deal. The X1 got crushed because it was the weaker console power wise (along with other factors).

The problem is we don't know price. How it is priced determines how badly I want one. If these things are $600, that's a lot and I'd consider sticking with what I have. $500 or less is a lot more interesting.

Without price, we're missing a vital piece of information.

20 years of being doomed, just built record number of game studios and building the most powerful console in the world.

RIP Xbox, it’s like we never knew ya.

Red rings, Don Mattrick, forced kinect and more expensive than your competitor while having less powerful hardware.

But this time they are going down!

If Phil weren't up against two systems, you'd probably have a point. I honestly don't think he anticipated Sony unveiling two consoles. That was an unexpected curve ball, I think. You noticed he hasn't unveiled the Series S yet or even hinted at it. Which leaves me to believe he wanted to give the impression that only one system would be launching the market (Series X) and of course Sony would also only have one system as well. It is the perfect bluff.......if only it had gone that way.

It's easier for two systems to corner one system into a pricing war since you could be very agile price wise and still penetrate the market comfortably as one system could easily offset the other's losses. I feel like this is where the power difference came from.

Yeah, an all digital edition is a brilliant, unprecedented move that only the marketing geniuses at Sony could come up with. 🧐

For a launch, i would definitely think so - especially if they could have done it at any point during the PS4's life span but didn't or even down the line of the PS5.
