Power never was and never will be the deciding factor to any console generation. But it is very much an important part of it, hands down. People who say "power doesnt matter" are the same one's who dont have it. It happened to Xbox fans curent gen. It's happening to Sony fans with the PS5. .

It's rarely the deciding factor when purchasing a console and it'll matter even less this time because people are so much more invested in digital libraries and overall ecosystems. As long as they are close enough in power to run the same games and make them look the same it becomes much less important overall.

There are a lot of things that go into deciding who "wins" a console generation, clearly bringing in the most money is what matters to the hardware manufacturers, if they can make more money and sell fewer units they'd be just fine, those two things don't usually go together though, Sony has been making more money off of PSN alone than MS has been with it's entire xbox division for a while now.

It looks like MS is going to be pushing the subscription model even harder with next gen, we'll see if that strategy pays off since they'll be doing it from the start vs bringing it in halfway through when the "war" is already over. At the very least it may get more people to become multi console owners but they are still going to need a ton of high quality AAA exclusive content to get people to want to buy into a second ecosystem..

How much power matters is all relative and depends on priorities. Base PS4 power mattered because it was also cheaper. Aside from that, power has never determined the "winner".

I'd be disingenuous to say its end all be all for me. I went with Xbox One over base PS4 and still play on my One X over my more powerful PC. I think it matters more to some people.

One X over the S mattered. OG Xbox One power mattered because of the types of games it could play from PC not possible on other consoles. We're not looking at that type of disparity here.

Bought an xbox because of the power advantage, bought a 360 because it was first out, bought an xbox one because I was invested in achievements, the controller and exclusives even full knowing it was power inferior and more expensive, bought an xbox scorpio because of power, will buy a xsx because all above.

Power means less when you're invested in the brand, seeing how the support regarding bc is going forward I'd think that's where it's going to be for many.

I think power matters to a % of gamers at the beginning of a generation. It helps set the narrative for its public introduction, and that does matter initially.

Hell I even clearly remember seeing the first ad for the Turbografx 16 in EGM, touting its power. It had to! It had games no one had ever heard of, so what other selling point did they have?

The PS4 did it at the onset of last gen, and that point was driven home repeatedly for at least a year after launch. Even claims like ‘1080p makes you a better gamer.’

People who love PS or X will stick with their box no matter what the power. And power won’t be enough to shift a ton of consumers, especially if games are lacking.

But to say it doesn’t matter is just false. I read tons of twitter and YT comments, and a lot of people on the fence seem to be far, far more positive towards the XSX than they were about the X1. The reveal trailer alone already has more than 10M views, and the overall opinion of Xbox as a whole seems to be improving.

And why? Because MS sacked up and made a hefty piece of HW. And they are letting everyone know that with new info every few weeks.

Will Sony sell more units overall, and ‘win’ this upcoming gen? It’s practically guaranteed. But having a super strong piece of HW at the onset of a new gen will absolutely cause at least some % of gamers to go with SxS, at least initially. I’m willing to bet initial sales will crush those of the 1X.

Things like AI & Animation has less to do with hardware than tools & resource/time.

For animations, up until now...yes. That can all change in the future thanks to ML and the possibilities more compute brings. https://www.engadget.com/amp/2018-08-13-ai-animations-digital-avatars-video-games.html

AI is very compute heavy. The key with AI is not about making it more difficult but rather dynamic. If/and/or/then formulas have can have exponential impact on compute used. Especially with more variables on the screen.

Most underrated factor next gen is how much all that extra compute can allow devs with less manpower and resources to do things that used to be very expensive.

Not liking the white at all, there are pics with other colors too and they all look like toys, should have been pure black or black and gray. The transparent tops on the buttons make it look like they are flush with the front of the controller when you look dead on lol. Get that white two tone s*** out of there.

I like the shape of it though and the stuff they are doing with the haptic feedback sounds awesome.

This looks so much better IMO

These just look like toys to me, I'm sure it feels great to use but damn they need to be sure to offer solid black at launch lol.

Just for the hell of it :)

So if you favor Microsoft now all of a sudden power does matter.

People need to stop pretending the "other side" is worse.

Yeah it's the same way with all things in life, when the roles are reversed so do peoples opinions. I think just about everyone is guilty of this most of the time, none of us are immune and we should know better.

I like it but it would look better in black. Also has a built in Microphone. I don't think the series X controller has that
Exactly what I've been saying. Xbox should have added a mic since the S redo/Bluetooth. Why remove Kinect and NOT put a mic in the controller? Then they add Google/Alexa voice assistants? WTF? Was honestly baffled again at the omission of SX controller...

Controller honestly looks super cool!!! I just wish the share/menu buttons were bigger. That little guy on the right is the worst part of PSVR UI, having to find and hold that little sliver to re-center. Still looks improved and further from pad though.

I wonder what Pessino is talking about? Wasn’t there some patent about haptic feedback? What else could they possibly do?

I think it looks pretty cool, but with everything ‘feel’ is more important to me. Hopefully it feels nice and sturdy, and not too light/plastic-y.

Yeah they talked about this last October in the Wired interview, the guy got hands on with a version of the controller and had this to say.

One is "adaptive triggers" that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing—the tension increasing as you pull the arrow back—or make a machine gun feel far different from a shotgun. It also boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to, with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller.

Combined with an improved speaker on the controller, the haptics can enable some astonishing effects. First, I play through a series of short demos, courtesy of the same Japan Studio team that designed PlayStation VR's Astro Bot Rescue Mission. In the most impressive, I ran a character through a platform level featuring a number of different surfaces, all of which gave distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences. Sand felt slow and sloggy; mud felt slow and soggy. On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding. Jumping into a pool, I got a sense of the resistance of the water; on a wooden bridge, a bouncy sensation.

Next, a version of Gran Turismo Sport that Sony had ported over to a PS5 devkit—a devkit that on quick glance looks a lot like the one Gizmodo reported on last week. (The company refused to comment on questions about how the devkit's form factor might compare to what's being considered for the consumer product.) Driving on the border between the track and the dirt, I could feel both surfaces. Doing the same thing on the same track using a DualShock 4 on a PS4, that sensation disappeared entirely. It wasn't that the old style rumble feedback paled in comparison, it was that there was no feedback at all. User tests found that rumble feedback was too tiring to use continuously, so the released version of GT Sport simply didn't use it.

That difference has been a long time coming. Product manager Toshi Aoki says the controller team has been working on haptic feedback since the DualShock 4 was in development. They even could have included it in PS4 Pro, the mid-cycle refresh—though doing so would have created a "split experience" for gamers, so the feature suite was held for the next generation. There are some other small improvements over the DualShock 4. The next-gen controller uses a USB Type-C connector for charging (and you can play through the cable as well). Its larger-capacity battery and haptics motors make the new controller a bit heavier than the DualShock 4, but Aoki says it will still come in a bit lighter than the current Xbox controller "with batteries in it."

I wouldn't mind the white so much if the back was navy blue, they blend together better than black and white. I'd still rather have an all black controller or if it has to be two tone a darker top layer but I really like the design of the thing overall.

Controller looks better ergonomically. I like the look. Still can't stand the sticks so wont use it unless I have to.

Yeah, a bunch of people parroting a singular dev who probably saw the conference.

It's the exact same rumor everyone else wants to talk about. Hes just mentioning the rumour. Is that the one who deleted their own post? Was this a person actually working on something for both, or someone basing comments on what they heard?

Paul's actual assessment is a grounded, self-admittedly-deprived-of-enough-info-on
-these-consoles take. His own assessment doesn't mirror that rumor, so you pointing out his mention of scuttlebutt means nothing.
