Would love for MS to tell us the official number of consoles sold. Ain't gonna happen :(

....because they are getting beaten.

360 era they had no trouble letting us know.

/but this isn't the right thread for that kind of discussion.

XBOX isn't competing with PS either. That is literally the point. Their primary focus is Game Pass, from the CEO of the enterprise down. Their incentive compensation packages for the CEO and named executives specifically have incentives for Game Pass - not for consoles sold, not for console market share, not for MS games sold, not for metacritic ratings for games, the only component for gaming that is specifically called out with an incentive is Game Pass. This is from top to bottom the primary driver of the Xbox strategy.

I mean, the whole point of selling consoles has always been to get money from software - Microsoft as a company has lost money on selling consoles (and I presume that doesn't even include the R&D and the cost of the RROD failures, but I didn't read the Epic documents to see if that was part of the testimony). Gaming has been shifting towards finding ways to make money on software other than the initial purchase price as well. This is basically the next step, moving away from single point purchases and into recurring revenue.

I don't remember if you're one of the folks who works with Autodesk products too, but they also went heavy on the subscription model in the mid 2010s. That's the direction a lot of software is going, and in the end, Microsoft is a software company. I'm sure they'd love to sell more consoles too, but I still think if they can get to 2/3 of Sony's hardware sales and get to 60M gamepass subs by the end of the generation, they'll be much happier than if they somehow found magic rainbow unicorn farts and got to 110% of Sony's hardware sales and only had 35M gamepass subs.
Yes, I work & paid for Autodesk product mainly Maya LT. Yes Autodesk earn from sub. But here is the thing, Sub is a reflection of USER, just like gamepass is a reflection of consoles sold.

Obviously Sony do not care as much about console sold, It is the amount of profit made from revenue of game sales/MTXs/subsription, but all these are link to Sony console sales.

Gamepass is mobile, PC, Xbox console. It isn't really tetherd any more.

PS5 games coming to PC as well.

Jisatsu_Kiddo: “PlayStation will remain the best place to play our PlayStation Studios titles at launch. But we do value PC gamers, and we’ll continue to look at the right times to launch each game.”

Val em cry...

"We believe in generations"

More like PS is the LEAST in on next-gen out of all gaming devices. And I wanted them to do well this gen.

?

Most next gen looking exclusives pushing the consoles visuals boundary, fastest selling hardware in units and dollars in the PS5, looks like a continuation of the great generation that was the PS4. It has been a great start so far.

Porting their old exclusives to the PC is a great way to generate more revenue as new IP's and sequels are being developed.

Even better is that they want to put their PS5 games on PC as well. That is a win win.

This would be reasonable if they were coming out this year but cross gen games in 2022? Gross.
They were likely planned for this year when development began. I think after seeing how good Horizon looked as a cross-gen games most people should calm down about the early cross-gen stuff when it comes to first party at least. No way the PS4 version touches the PS5 version graphically and if we are all being honest it takes a couple of years for even true next gen exclusives to really start hitting their stride graphically, most games in the first 2-3 years are still using engines that haven't been tuned to take full advantage of the new hardware etc.

Look at what happened last gen, TLOU launched on PS3 in the same year but when the PS4 came out we got a killzone game that it seems nobody liked and a few months later we got InFamous and nothing much really until the following year. The PS5 launched with BC which helps for big games like GoT and TLOU2 being playable but we got PS5 exclusive games like Demon's Souls remake, Returnal, R&C all PS5 exclusive as well as possibly a huge cross gen game Horizon ZD that was actually developed with the PS5 in mind the entire time,. Would I like it better if these games were purely PS5 games? Sure but I have more confidence in Sony's 1st party studios when it comes to actually pushing the hardware than I would a 3rd party studio.

On another topic I know Jim Ryan made that comment about generations but in that same interview he also aid they'd continue to support the PS4 for years so it's not like they are doing anything different than what he said it's just people only read headlines and at the time the media was pushing the Sony approach vs MS approach where MS said their games would play on the whole family of consoles for a long time to come. Ryan never actually said all PS5 games would be exclusive to the console, saying they'd support PS4 for years actually goes against that but people just took bits of his interview out of context.

The numbers might be sad but we get em.
One day we might get them. Until then, I guess MS wants to keep us in the dark. But then again, they have billions of Microsoft Windows PCs and billions of Mobile devices, so I don't think they are too concerned.
