If it goes on PS+

Looks like trend is native PS5 games will take up less and less SSD space as the gen moves forward.

I actually get a little freaked out in games like Assassins Creed where you have to swim blindly into a tunnel and hope there's a way out.

It's a meh game with meh graphics and gameplay, okay story and an unnecessary gimmick that bogs down the res.
I haven't played it. But I'm glad I didn't buy it. Maybe when it goes on sale.

One thing's for sure, it's coming out on PS5 and the console comparison is going to cause a ruckus up in here.

I do not think there is hardware compression accelerator or something on SSD (I could be wrong). Compression is usually a software thingy.

WHat compression do, is looking for something that can be group to save space.

To give an example (illustration), say a txt read RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSS (20 letters), you can save space by compressing as 16R4S (5 characters), The decompressor know how to read the compressor & output to RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSS when needed.

The advantage of SSD is speed. So instead of having to decompress raw data (in our case RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSS) in the harddisk, & then send the raw data to RAM like HDD, SSD can just decompress the compressed data & send direct to RAM saving file size, without needing to decompress before hand.

But I could be wrong about how it works in PS5.

It really shouldn't, the studio is over 100 people but not gigantic and being that the medium doesn't look all that great on the series x where they got paid extra for timed exclusivity I don't think it's going to look any better on PS5. When it comes to very average looking games from mediocre developers I don't think anyone should get too excited if their preferred console "wins" when clearly the game isn't pushing either piece of hardware anywhere close to it's limits.

How does an ssd compress a file, is it not just for storage/transfer of said file?

Don't think he was referring to the SSD compressing files but more that there won't be as many duplicate files like last gen where they stored many repetitive files to reduce HDD seeking times. With the SSD, they don't need do that anymore so less space is required.

I think Cerny mentioned this in his Road to PS5 presentation. Since the current (next-gen) consoles are using SSD now instead of hard disc, the developers do not have to store duplicate assets of the game near certain other assets. They used to have to store duplicate asset in strategic places, so that the hard drive reading arm does not have to waste time fetching the game assets from another area of the disc.

Here is the part in Cerny's presentation:

For example we might group all the data together for each city block that removes most of the seeks and the streaming gets faster but there's a downside too which is that frequently used data is included in many chunks and therefore is on the hard drive many many times.

Marvel's Spider-man uses this strategy and though it works very well for increasing the streaming speed.
There's a massive duplication as a result some of the objects like mailboxes or newsracks are on the hard drive for hundred times.

I would rather play games that interest me. I never go by metascore, ever.

Same with movies.

What I love is “OMG Miles Morales is the best eva”

Score: 85

then “OMG Halo 5 sucks balls close down 343”

Score: 84

Scores count when?

Critically acclaimed means more people like them in the general population and it's what developers like to see when making a game. More people playing and liking what they made always feels good.
Critically acclaimed typically refers to the professional reviewers, which can differ substantially from the user ratings.

You mean the reviewers who hype and rave and give high scores only to turn around after launch and completely change their mind?

Sorry for tge question, but "Proffessional reviewer" threw me a liitle. Pretty sure those guys got wiped out in the console war.

I love Halo. But that’s besides the point. Just talking about scores. Scores matter when it’s convenient.
No, scores are derived from pointless reviews, thus 84 for Halo actually means sub 60. This is all very straight forward.

Watch Dogs 60fps mode tested. Seems like the general trend these days, XSX with the resolution advantage, PS5 with the performance and sometimes texture filtering advantage.

TLDR;
-PS5 has better performance and improved texture filtering
-XSX has higher resolution

The versions tested were 2.13.0.0 on Xbox Series consoles and 1.120.000 on PS5. There may be some time of day variance in some clips. Watch Dogs Legion on PS5 and the Xbox Series consoles have two modes: a 30fps mode with Ray Tracing and a 60fps mode that doesn't have Ray Tracing.
The footage in this video and the information below are for the 60fps mode. Xbox Series X uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2364x1330. Native resolution pixel counts at 3840x2160 seem to be rare on Xbox Series X. Xbox Series X uses temporal upsampling that can reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.
PS5 uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 3392x1908 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2080x1180. Native resolution pixel counts at 3392x1908 seem to be rare on PS5. PS5 uses temporal upsampling that can reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution.

In some scenes the resolution difference between PS5 and Xbox Series X can be smaller than it is at the highest and lowest resolutions found, with one scene rendering at approximately 3100x1744 on PS5 and approximately 3392x1908 on Xbox Series X and another scene rendering at approximately 2800x1575 on PS5 and approximately 2951x1660 on Xbox Series X.

Xbox Series S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 1920x1080 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1200x675. Xbox Series S uses temporal upsampling that can reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.

PS5 and Xbox Series X have some enhancements over Xbox Series S such as: an improved LOD transition distance (5:03) and a longer draw distance for certain objects (6:14) Some aspects of the game update at 30hz such as car wheels.

I’m referring mainly to how Metacritic categorizes ratings and already stated their ratings often do not reflect general user opinion.
