The PS5 will also have the option to swap out SSD cards as well as upgrade to larger ones. Sony also mentioned that you could download portions of the game that you only want to play - such as online and offline or both to conserve space. So, i imagine that depends on the type of gamer you are at that moment.

hopefully with Sony’s push on certified/approved SSDs manufactures will produce more and bring down their price...looking at some earlier and some are hella pricey. I hope they have another event or accessory deep dive into what’s compatible so I may purchase one in advance or save up for one, that’s worth it.

Does anyone actually think MS will show better games?
Serious question?

THIS is the image MS needs to change.
They need to give people a reason to take them serious.

They just need to have at least one game shown as good as HZD2. If they do Infinite right then it’s possible.

Anyone else feel that ratchet and clank is just a hint of what should and could be possible with the ssd less than what that game that was shown for the series x?

it was a neat trick but it doesn’t look like you have total control of warping through worlds or through them. It’s either a mode to move through a snazzy set piece (with what looks like an empty buffer zone between where you were and where you’re going) or to quickly move you to another part of the current location, out of harms way.

that one game, sorry the name escapes me atm, had the world changing on the fly like that old Zelda game on the snes.

i don’t know the technical details/challenges but don’t games like halo ce/2 anniversary and Starcraft (I’m sure there others) that let you switch between two engines of the game on the fly could use said techniques to do similar stuff of what we’re hoping to see in the future.... oh that Dreamcast game, legacy of kain, no?

I'm beginning to think this ssd hype will leave people disappointed if they expect much more than better/nonexistence loadtimes tbh, just like xbox cloud hype.

A good 10 minute Halo Infinite showing shuts down that show. Throw in Hell Blade II with a Fable or Perfect Dark reveal, it's a wrap.

They have no excuse not to bring the heat with those 15 studios to hype Series X.

If they ever want to make that impact, the july showcase is the time.

Cerny said that after the console launches, they'll have a list of some you can buy that are compatible with the system. And yes, they are expensive, but just like the memory sticks and HDD, they will drop pretty rapidly.

If that were the case, i think we would have noticed by now. Yet, it's been proven. You'd have to have blinders on to think otherwise.

Those were my first thoughts, too.

This is early footage on new hardware - launch even. Developers don't start getting used to the hardware until around the 2nd and 3rd year. If games are already doing the things it is doing now, developers are going to raise that bar significantly later on with the SSD. Looking at Octo Dad, Knack and Killzone at launch, did you think it was possible for the system to pull off something like The Last of Us 2, Detroit: Become Human, GoW, Horizon etc.? Give them a few years.

What have we noticed? We can skip between dimensions with a half second loading transition in ratchet? That's nifty, don't get me wrong (and really what I said the SSD's most likely able to be used for other than regular loads) but I will go out on a limb now and say that once games are released, if DF or anyone else profiles the SSD usage, other than the loading or fast travel, less than one tenth of one percent of the time will they be reading from disk faster than the 2.5 gb/sec baseline on the xsx. I mean, the folks at PlayStation's studios are wizards but there's just no way to design a game around constantly reading GB/sec of unique data from disk for any reason unless storage space is not really limited.

SSD is a huge improvement, but even then some games still have massive load times. Every load time isn't simply a hardware limitation. It seems like many games just take an eternity to load. SSD isn't going to fix every issue. I have PC games that still take a long time to load off a solid SSD.

Wtf it's HUGE lol
now keep in mind that someone did this with the measurements of the disc drivers and USB being the same size ports. I didn't do this.
Now if these are true, I don't care what anyone says, you have to give the people at MS surface team coming up with the console design.

Not "SSD cards" - NVME2 SSDs. They look like:

It'll probably be easier than replacing a normal HD/SSD, but not something you'll just swap in and out (which is the benefit of the XSX expandable storage route, though of course you're then limited to whoever they let make compatible hardware).

Yeah I have 2 of these in my PC. Even with thermal pads they can get around 55 degrees with extended instances of read/write. Keeping these things cooled is paramount to the NAND performance. Granted they can get a lot hotter before they start to throttle I’m really curious to see how both Sony and Microsoft cool these drives. Particularly in the case of the PS5 since that drive is even faster and is going to be generating ridiculous heat due to constant read/write cycles.

Better games is subjective. I do expect them, if any hint of the rumor mill is true, to show more games I'm personally interested in coming out of their 1st party studios ( Minus Compusion Games, they haven't made a quality game yet)

After seeing yesterday's show, it should be easy. But no doubt, MS will screw it up.

I don't feel like its easy unless they are willing to really willing to blow their whole load. Which maybe they will and should but I don't think its a lock.
