Official Thread ReCore: Definitive Edition

Please quote where I wrote off the game?

Voicing that I wished the game was big budget is not a dismissal of it. I bought Ori and loved it.

My point in saying that I wanted a AAA budgeted game is because there are so few big new IPs that MSoft has put out so far. It is a disappointing state of affairs in my book.

I will gladly buy this game but I will not champion MSoft in their current games strategy.

totes apologies for this.....i wasn't throwing you under the bus but what I had seen elsewhere......3 hour que to play this at e3 each day tells me everything that I need to know. Sorry again was not calling you out on anything!

No problemo amigo.

Yeah good news that it was well received on the show floor. Maybe it will be a nice cheap little sleeper hit?

2016: Hands-On with ReCore – The Metroid Prime Successor

ReCore-Delayed.jpg

ReCore sold itself to millions of gamers with one simple statement: “from the makers of Metroid Prime”. That Gamecube classic is still regarded by many as one of the best games of all time. Anyone who had a hand in creating that masterpiece has a bit of a free pass when pitching new games to those fans. It helped that the game looked great by itself, with an engaging main character, and a mysterious looking storyline. Finally, after a year of waiting, I got to go hands-on with ReCore, and so far it’s living up to its Metroid Prime pedigree.

ReCore stars Joule, a settler who finds herself stranded and alone when something goes wrong on her mission to Far Eden. The robots that were meant to help her and her fellow adventurers settle on the planet have run amok, at least most of them have. A select few are still friendly, and are helping her along her way to figuring out what went wrong, and how to possibly fix it.

I keep referring to it as a Metroid Prime successor, and with good reason. A lot of the core concepts from that game are present here, with a lone woman exploring a vast alien landscape. However, ReCore definitely blazes its own path. In fact, it has a similarly impressive resume in that it is being shepherded by Keiji Inafune, the creator of Mega Man.

And really, when you know that, a lot of the pieces of this game come together. It is a third-person action game in many ways, but it is also a platformer, and even features lock-on combat, ala Metroid Prime. It also has the traversal and puzzle mechanics from MP, with color coded devices that require you to have the right robot helping you out.

These types of roadblocks will also create the backtracking that Metroid fans are so used to

You can switch between them as necessary, but you’ll still need to have found them, and possibly upgraded them to take advantage. For example, in the E3 2016 demo there were yellow railways along the walls and ceilings. If you had your spider-looking robot out they can create an anchor point for you to latch onto, then carry you along the path to your destination. It felt very much like the magnetic railways that Samus could ride on in ball form.

These types of roadblocks will also create the backtracking that Metroid fans are so used to, and crave so much. You’ll run up against areas that you can’t access, but later on you’ll gain entry thanks to your robot companions.

Combat feels very Metroid-esque as well, with color-coded enemies that you have to match your laser to. You can still kill a yellow enemy with red lasers, but it will take longer. There is even a charge shot that deals extra damage. Enemies take patience and thought to take out, as they can easily swarm you and become overwhelming. I even died once in the demo, which is rare at E3.

Platforming was still a little rough, but the team has a lot of time to work out any kinks in that system. It wasn’t terrible at all, but pressing the right buttons, and making sure you land on your target was troublesome at times, with both a double jump and a boost mechanic creating some definite challenges.

Even with this small fault, ReCore was an E3 favorite of mine. It’s probably not going to be as grandiose as Metroid Prime or Mega Man, but it is a fantastic amalgamation of those two venerable series. If you’re a fan of either, ReCore should be on your watch list for the coming months.

ReCore hits Xbox One and Windows 10 PC on September 13th.

Purchased and now just waiting for the unlock day. Looks like a lot of fun and a great mix of Classic Side scroller Megaman action,Super Metroid style exploration and a bit of Burning Rangers in the boss fights.
I totally called this megaman months ago! Its like I have ESPn or something!?

The actual gameplay looks much better than all the trailers they've done. They should have just shown us that at E3. Game is on my bought list now, but I had to dig to see it's a cool game.

'ReCore' is the mashup of 'Metroid' and 'Mega Man' I didn't know I wanted

Unfortunately, I didn't really get to do any exploration, but I did get a good taste of the smooth and fluid combat system during my demo. One trigger locks you on to your enemies and the other lets you blast away, making it relatively painless to keep up with the swarms of fast-moving attacking robots. Another button tells your robot companion to attack, and you can swap rapidly between them at any time. Each bot has its own special attack you can use to even the odds, as well.

The bots are designed to be crucial to your success -- if you forget about utilizing those special attacks, you'll likely end up in big trouble. But using those, as well as the Mega Man-style charge attacks, can help even the odds. There's just something about the combo of dashing about and blasting away that reminded me of Mega Man, not in a hugely obvious way, but there's clear inspiration here. No surprise given that one of Mega Man's creators Keiji Inafune is a producer on ReCore.

Another gameplay technique that sets ReCore apart is the fact that you have four different-colored blasters, each of which corresponds to an enemy type. So if you come across reddish enemies, using the red blaster will deal extra damage. But some bigger enemies can only be killed by using your grappling hook to rip their glowing "core" orbs out of their bodies, and some of those enemies have cores that switch colors at will. So you'll have to keep an eye on which blaster you're using at any given time to be most effective.

The big question I was unable to answer in my quick 10-minute play session was how Recore will hold up over longer play sessions -- there have been questions about whether or not the combat will get too repetitive over the course of the game. I didn't get to find out how long the entire campaign will be, but the game doesn't feel like it's going to have that extensive of a running time where you'll get tired of it. In fact, the controls and combat felt tight and fun enough that I think I'll be happy to play the game for hours on end. Plus, that robotic dog is so cute.

Never played Metro Prime so this should seem fresh to me.

The game looks very polished which is something I really appreciate in today's sell a beta\unfinished game.

I like the trailer but the game could have done with a stage demo as well. Especially as a new iP that's nearly out.

Reminded me a lot of Banjo-Kazooie, at least when players were doing it right. Could have done with a much better staged demo, but Gamescom is waiting.

You need to go play Metroid Prime

If ReCore is anything like Metroid i'll be in heaven. Especially since we haven't even gotten a Metroid game this gen.

Limited deal.

Pre order this off the market place and get banjo nuts and bolts free

Would hope so but their last new iP hasn't really taken off sadly.

So, ReCore in September. I don't know if i'm getting it day one but we'll see. These next few months are going to be crazy, as usual.
