Assassin's Creed Origins

I hadn't decided whether to pick this up or not and I think that I've just been pushed into making this a definite buy and now it's more a case of how long I can put off buying it so I don't get tempted to start before the X arrives (and knowing that last I checked, I have close to 300GB bandwidth left for October).

I put it off for literally minutes after this post, but, uh, it was done downloading before the end of the evening. Now I just have to convince myself not to start it up until I get my Scorpio on.

Didn't realise tthis was out, I thought it released this Friday.

Anyway, it has just finished downloading:grin:

It's really good. Probably the best AC game Ubisoft have ever released. Move over Black Flag, there is a new king in the AC family.

Fell off AC a long time ago. I might put this in the queue to play during a slow game period. Glad to hear everyone enjoying it.

The game is huge, dude. Just do it. At least just play through Siwa. Run around and explore. That way, when the X comes, you get to experience the upgrade directly.

This is one of those games that you know is going to be amazing inside the first hour. Everything just feels right, the combat has an appropriate learning curve, and the story is immediately interesting.

My only complaint after a few hours is you get new weapons at a really high clip. Not really satisfying to get a new cool weapon when your likely going to get 3 more over the next hour.

Yeah, but if you like one, at least you can take it to the blacksmith for an upgrade. I actually keep Bayek's Father's Kopesh. I feel a strange sense of connection to it.

20 hours in, level 19. Still in Alexandria. It's already up there as one of my favorite games of all time.

I'm going to disagree. I have played about an hour and initial impressions are mixed. A couple of negatives I have noticed...

1. Tge fighting system seems to be missing a parry ability.
2. The dodge is OP and makes these early fights rather easy, even on hard difficulty.
3. There appears to be noway to tell when an NPC is attacking, which can make combat very annoying.
4. The few side quests I have done thus far are basically fetch quests dressed up as "rescues."

Now, it is possible that #1 & #3 might be rectified via the skill tree.

But it is super early in the game right now...

There is a parry. It's in the warrior tree, I believe. Pretty early skill. Not sure about anything that signals an attack, but I've been able to successfully parry pretty regularly, so It hasn't really been an issue. What really stinks if fighting baddies who are mounted and shooting arrows. Make sure to always have a long weapon in your inventory. Long weapons make attacking from a mounted position much better, as it should.

There is a parry ability in the skill tree. For the attack stuff they have visual ques. For the side quests there is a couple of fetch quests but most of the quests I’ve come across are very good and some are quite abstract.

Yep I basically look at most weapons as currency lol.

Make sure to log onto Uplay and unlock rewards. Plus if you have Uplay points you can spend them to unlock things. Worth it.

I have no visual cues. I'm not talking about one on one, I am talking about 3+ on one. They attack out of nowhere and usually out of your field of view. There is no visual sign they are attacking and no audio sign that I have noticed either.

Ah yeah. The lock on system and combat in general I find a bit clunky. I’ve solved those problems by wild swings of an two handed battle axe.

Yes, that's it, I can play the prologue/opening chapter... for science! I may have to give it a shot Saturday morning since I doubt I'll get a chance before then.

I dislike the franchise. Will this make me feel differently? I was bored by the constant interaction with no action.

If you liked the Witcher 3, then I think the answer is you will probably like this. They have gone down the road of slowly turning it into an action RPG which is the best move they could have made I think. Gone is the one button counter move combat, for example. Now you have actual fighting, clunky though it might be. You still climb points to synchronize fast travel but now these points can be anything from a tree to a huge tower to a cliff face and they have added auto fast travel points to all the villages and towns that unlock automatically as you enter that’s place for the first time. They have also changed the discoverable stuff. Now there isn’t as many things in each region but each thing you do track down is related to the area you are in, like a scroll in a village that gives you a clue to find something in that area, or sword/armor you can steal from a milita base. There are loads of small changes along side the big ones.

The problem with answering these types of questions is thaat this game is still very much an Assassins Creed game. The way you traverse the world, the sync towers, stealth, etc are all still at the heart of the game.

The main gamplay change is the combat system. Instead of the dull reactionary system we now have something very much like an action RPG, witcher 3, Skyrim, Fable, etc. It certainly is a big improvement...but, based on my limited playing time thus far, I do feel like they could have fleshed it out a bit for those who like more complicated combat.

However, the different weapon types do feel very different. Maces are heavy and take time to swing, but deal a substantial blow when they land. Swords feel nimble and quick. Spears feel like an inbetween of the previous two and have the added AOE effect letting you hit multiple targets with one swing.

The spear is my fav thus far. I 'm sure there are othe weapons I have yet to try.

How does the combat compare to Middle-Earth and Arkham series?

Simple answer is it doesn't compare. AC combat is more about stealth killing the minions and brawling with the boss 1 on 1. The system in those other games is designed for big groups v 1.

Sounds like I'll still be bored with it. Maybe I'll give it a rental?
