I grabbed the beta on my work X1's, my home X1's, home 360's, and work 360's. I've got it everywhere now.
Honestly, I think the visuals really are last gen. The character models are about Mass Effect quality (if that), the landscapes (while beautifully designed and colored) have low-res textures everywhere, and the geometric complexity is quite poor. The lighting looks like slightly more advanced lighting from last gen, but it's not much better.; higher quality variants of the same kind of lighting done last gen. The depth of field looks alright, but no where near something like Ryse, or Infamous.
Overall, all of my suspicions and assessments prior to actually playing it were accurate. This is last-gen visuals in 1080p with slight improvements across the board. I wouldn't be surprised if Halo 4 running in 1080p and at 60fps looks/feels more next gen than Destiny.
The gameplay also feels dated, but perhaps that's because I've been playing so much Titanfall. Games like Assassin's Creed, Titanfall, etc. give the user so much freedom in terms of movement, climbing on structures, etc... Destiny just feels like Halo: Combat Evolved. It feels old school. I kinda' liked that feeling for nastalgia's sake, but the gameplay (so far) feels very dated (though admittedly, I'm not far into the game yet).
The cursor on UI is ridiculous, and makes no sense.
I love the music. I wonder how much of it is from Marty, and how much isn't from him? Either way, it's great.
The Cortana replacement is fine. Male instead of female... which is cool, because my character is female, so now it's like gender reversal of Cortana/MC.
The enemies all seem a bit like Elites from Reach, in terms of their attack and defense strategies.
I like the blend of third and first person.
I like that loading screens are more interesting than black screens with wheels, but so far - there's A LOT of loading. This is next gen, people. There's more loading in this game than in Halo: Combat Evolved. Sad.
I like how Earth feels so barren. They nailed that sense of "this has long-since been destroyed".
...but seriously, the 360 version looks good for last gen, and PS4/X1 versions just look "remastered" last-gen gaming.
The story seems interesting... but (again), I'm not far in it yet.
I did like the seamless cross-generational experience. I loaded up Destiny on my 360 after playing on X1, and my character and state all moved with me.
So far, no way I'd buy this game... certainly not at full price. Maybe if I get it for $30 or so... but no way it's worth $60.
Bungie - seriously - get your heads out of the sand, and look at all the great work other people in the industry have done. You could learn A LOT... and to stay relevant, you'll need to.
