I actually got some time to play this today. Been a hectic several months.
I kind of dig the game overall - the RPG/customization aspect is nifty, and I actually like occasionally running across other players now and then. The story seems like it could be interesting enough, too. I imagine the upgraded Hunter class could be a lot of fun - as it is, the double jump is nice.
What I don't like is the artificial difficulty of 'darkness zones' coupled with the stupid AI that allows me to get through it. In several of those areas, the path to survival was trigger spawn points, run backwards, have the enemies follow you to a certain point and then they run the heck away. The most egregious for me was the mission where you have to take out the "Wizard", and the enemies other than the acolytes whose name I don't remember are basically dumb bumrushing you. I'd just run down the stairs, shoot them as they ran down, and one time out of five I'd have to back up further. down into the chamber before the door. That was actually fun, but I was completely incapable of doing several of the missions otherwise (though, admittedly, that may be a side effect of playing the hard difficulty options).
The mission where you have to get your ghost to a terminal and then endure the fallen attack was annoying as hell. Luckily the dropback option worked again, but I had no idea if we were just supposed to make time or kill everyone or protect the ghost or whatnot - and my son's reaction watching me ("another captain? Really? That's like three!" summed it up. Some checkpointing between waves would be highly appreciated.
Probably not going to have the kind of time needed to play it regularly after it releases, so it'll likely be skipped like I did with Titanfall. It does seem like fun, though, but I'm not sure it really handles the difficulty scaling well and seems more cheap than requiring skill. Luckily, having no skill, I could get by on the cheap but that didn't seem ideal. At its best, it did feel a lot like Halo with the excitement and the music, plus a little of Mass Effect 2.
