Personally, I liked the first Mass Effect more than the sequels, despite the technical limitations. I thought the story and the characters were more interesting, and the RPG elements were a lot stronger. All that seemed watered down in the sequels, with an emphasis on shooter mechanics. The first game also had a sense of wonder that was missing in the others, in part because it was the original, a new creation, whereas the sequels were ... well, sequels. I played the first game three times (very rare for me). One of my favorites.

me1 had that feeling because it had a story and actual exploration. me2 was a straight-road of babysitting missions; and they replaced exploration with that probe minigame wtf (yes i'm still mad at the changes)

ME going MMO would be the worst thing for me. I have zero interest in MMOs. I like a good narrative with character development, and the more choices you allow the player, the more generic character interaction tends to become( fable being the worst offender that's not an MMO). It also diminishes your importance if everyone running around is the same special character as you.

That and the time required by MMOs is way too much.

The gunplay in this series is so freakin boring. Give me ship combat, more roleplaying and exploration and I'll give it another shot.

I think ME is fantastic, but I would agree in saying I'd like to see more RPG elements make their way back into the forefront.

I'm looking forward to a reboot for the series. New characters, new time and place, new hardware. Should be interesting.

Looks awesome. Just "conceptual prototypes," but I know they're well into development by now.

I'd love to hear more about that second game, the new IP.

I've always been a Bioware fan. The ME3 ending didn't throw me the way it did other people (I played the game later and so knew what to expect and wasn't disappointed). It'll be nice to get a new game from them every year (I'm imagining ME4 next year, then the new IP the following year, then another Dragon Age, etc.).

ME3 ending was a low point for me as it concerns Bioware. I think that initially disappointed me more than DA2's reused dungeons and assets. But with the epilogue DLC fix and the excellent Citadel DLC ,I'm back on board. Andy, you and I would be in RPG heaven if we could get a Bioware game every year. But you know thats not gonna happen. At best, every 2-3 years.

Yeah, I'm probably dreaming. Every other year will be fine.

Re. ME3's ending... The only thing I didn't like about that ME4 video was seeing Casey Hudson and his permed hair (or whatever that is). Every time I see him, I can't help but think of him squirreled away in his office, crafting the crappy ending that will piss off Mass Effect fans the world over, without any input from the other writers.

I seem to have a good strategy for enjoying Bioware games, though, even when they screw up. What I do is, I wait a year before I play them. That way, I hear all of the negativity. My expectations get lowered, and I know what I'm getting into. And so I enjoy the game. I enjoyed ME3 just fine, and I'm even enjoying DA2. I won't be able to follow that strategy with for DA:I, though, because I'll want to play it right away. So I hope it's not too screwed up.

Unless they pull, DA2 and DA:I was all a dream of the warden from DA:O, I think they've learned their lesson on endings. Plus its Dragon Age, you have to try hard to screw it up. DA2 despite the reused dungeons and locations was still a pretty good game story and gameplay wise.

I guess the plan is for them to release a game every single year, just not yet. When Montreal ME goes on track and the new IP from the previous Edmonton ME team comes out, it's fair to expect a yearly Bioware game.

I still don't get the hate on ending though. It's a hard Sci-Fi-like, Arthur C. Clarke-ish ending that was foreshadowed since the early part of the game. Not that bad, hell, not bad at all.

I wonder if they actually make it to relaeasing a game a year will the quality still be top notch? Like I know seperate studios will be working on it with the bioware name but I'd like the quality to still be high.

Yeah I know, yearly release is something that reminds us of Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed, not a good thing to hear of. The impression I get is that this 'new Bioware' thing includes a gameplay and game design completely set in stone. Bioware games since Jade Empire all had different sorts of gameplay, always changing and iterating with each release. Some worked, others didn't, but clearly they could have afforded one great gameplay that just needed some enhancements which can save time and resource. Hopefully, if each of their games find that balance, 3-year cycle might not be that bad after all. And after all, it's not even like Ubisoft, since Dragon Age will be more action adventure-based and Mass Effect is already shooter-based. Every year it's going to be quite different.

Will have references to the trilogy but will remain separate. So not a prequel which is one good thing I just hope they don't move it 200 plus years ahead so they don't have to pick a cannon ending.

My guess? Wrex was betrayed/died and now the Krogan have become a problem for everyone.

I recently installed Mass Effect 3 again for another play through, this time as Fem Shep.

I know the ending was a bit controversial, but damn if that wasn't just a hell of a game. Great story telling, the gameplay and graphics hold up very well 2 years later, the characters are memorable, loose ends (mostly) tied up. Just a hell of a game if I'm honest. Glad I played through it again and this time with some of the DLC like Omega and the Prothean included within the main storyline.

Anyone still tooling around with this game? How do you feel about this game now that a couple of years has passed?

Agree, thought it was a fun game. Nothing earth-shaking, but a good game.

The ending blew.

The graphics don't hold up at all for me. Mass Effect 2 was much better in that department without a doubt. ME3 felt rushed.

3 is far from a record low that was the first one, and there are a few sequences that are just hella amazing. But IMO Mass Effect works best in the pseudo-episodic structure of the second game. In terms of the game's structure, Bioware listened to some of the unfair criticism on the second game and put too much pointless activities into the game. Combat was undeniably the best of three, though, and I'm all anticipations with the next game.

And then again, looking back, I still prefer Dragon Age over Mass Effect.

I thought Mass Effect just kept getting better with every installment. An overall great series and one of the best things to come out of last gen.

One of my favorite series from last gen, I didnt like the mission complete screen in ME2 though that was unnecessary and i am glad they got rid of it for ME3. Also the thermal clips idea was a bad change for the series imo. I liked ME1 and ME3 better than 2 overall though.

ME1 felt the most "open" of the three and sort of has that nostalgic feeling of wonder and discovery. It was all so new. I liked ME2 as well but for me ME3 was just such an intense and emotional game, especially if you had invested time into the other two. I think the storytelling aspect of the games peaked in ME3, whatever we might think of the some of the technical or gameplay choices (ie no planetary scanning for resources, no decryption and other minigames to speak of). But I guess that's what ME3 was about - all about telling the story and finishing the series, less about ticking boxes on the gameplay elements.

I know a lot of people didn't like the ending, but to me it felt suitably epic, even poetic, and it was "high thinking" enough to fit in the overall theme of extra-galactic sentient machines sent to cleanse civilization every 50,000 years.

While the story was great the real highlight and surprise was how well done the co-op mode was. The typical wave based survival mode was given a shot in the arm by the different objectives that were placed around the map that required a new game plan over just hunting enemies. Some had you hack a security computer requiring the team protect a specific location on the map while the hack progresses or activating terminals which was really risky if the team spread themselves too thin by going off to activate terminals solo. And the enemies were powerful and would coordinate a powerful offense to test your team's defenses with giant mechs and shielded dudes that could really take a beating before going down. Add in the great gunplay, variety of weapons and chance for biotic bonuses and the mode was better than it had any right to be. I was hoping the recently released co-op mode for Killzone would be as good but it pales in comparison to what ME3 brought two years ago.

I loved them all but the first will always be my favorite! I loved playing as both a male and then female and both characters as a paragon and renegade. The first game had the most fun with the renegade side of things of the three of them. Playing as a paragon and then a renegade felt like a totally different game at times and then even going from male to female too (and I think the voice actor for FemShep was fantastic). Game play wise I feel three was the best, felt the most fluid.

ME1 is still the best IMO. 2 was mostly filler with hacking and scanning and the only story arc I cared for in 3 was the Krogan part.
