No surprise at all, the game plays great on the old maps. 64 player conquest plays so much better. I was on one of the BF3 maps I think (man that was a long time ago) where there's lots of infantry fights in the middle, and still lots of vehicles around too.
I think with V and this game they went too hard on the "everyone in vehicles" thing. BF V started it but 2042 went too hard on it. Too wide open and just assuming that everyone is going to spend the whole match in vehicles.
Hopefully the season pulls some people in. I think it will.

A good BF game needs a mix of everything. That's why these older maps play so much better. I can spawn on the big infantry battles for the close together points, or in vehicles and play that game. Normally, a mix of both is needed every round. One quick glance at the map, and you know where to spawn for what you want.
The new maps lack any cover or even concealment, so you're just at the mercy of snipers and vehicles.

I'm surprised it hasn't been announced yet. It would really generate a lot more buzz, and get people to ignore the hate and actually play the game for themselves.
They've got to know that their best chance for making money long term is getting people in and buying the season pass. People aren't going to plunk down $60+ for a new map and a couple of guns. The game is actually in a good state now with all the patches (even the BF subreddit is less salty now). They just need people to try it.
It'll be at Xbox's presser. It will either be FIFA 22 or BF 2042.

The game was DOA. I jumped in today to check out how it's doing. While it is in a much better state than it was on release, DICE still has a long road ahead. It looks like they removed "AI" from bots too. I noticed weird behavior from many "players" on both sides running in circles or just shooting at random s***. I felt lonely in the server.

Just another company who wants a live service without the massive staff to back it up. It is no different than what's going on at 343 with Halo. Bungie is the only company still doing live service ok, and even their content is slipping badly. This entire season is a copy/paste from stuff they sunset in a past season. The amount of people working at Bungie is staggering and that's still thin on content. Halo is still doing 6 month seasons. Great gameplay, but as a live service it is a joke.
BF V had the exact same content drip. People forget a map had a crash bug in it and was delayed many months. Pacific didn't launch until more than a year after. And BF V was actually in a pretty stable state. Now the internet loves BF V for some reason which is hilarious after all the drama.
Ea/Dice would not have bothered with all the game fixes if they weren't going to jump ship. The internet wants nothing more than for EA to fail. Honestly the company should sell and rebrand at this point.
