Because it is off the shelf, you will get multiple sizes varying in cost. That's the upside to using standard, storage solution. I know Samsung and Lexar have been working on some for a minute now. Couple this with the fact that you can use an external for additional storage, and you kinda narrow that impact.

And by the way, the Xbox’s solution don't look too much better.

Xbox solution should be cheaper and is better cause you will be able to combine it.

I did not mean Sony or PS5 branded. SSD at PS5 speed or higher is NOT on the market as of this writing. I checked- It sill be super expensive when available for a while. But the NOT available is a real issue, as there is NO option to store PS5 games to be playable at all.

We don't know yet if that's the actual price, but if you buy that you spent 220 and have 2TB to play next gen games on. How much would it cost you to have 2TB on PS5? Not sure since I don't think you can get a 7GB/s SSD now and that's what they said you need, but a 2TB at 5GB/s will set you back about 400. https://www.newegg.com/sabrent-rocket-nvme-4-0-2tb/p/0D9-001Y-00014?&quicklink=true

You're looking at that wrong. That's 1TB not 2. Now, for 1TB on PS5, it will likely be around the same price, and then you'll get others much cheaper.

You can combine the one in the PS5 as well. You don't remove it's SSD, you simply add to it from a controlled bay, based in Cerny. And those drives come in multiple sizes, not just one or two. This is the advantage to getting an off the shelf storage.

No, if you buy a 1TB SSD for the PS5, your PS5 will have 1TB available - which is pointless, since you have almost that much already. If you buy a 1TB expansion for the XSX, you'll have 2TB available. Expansion vs replacement. Sure, you can swap back and forth between the two on PS, but it's pretty unfortunate that the one thing that your bosses in Sony's PR have touted above all has to be removed if you want more space.

Wait, have they confirmed this? What I've read is that it was replaceable like PS4 and since we haven't seen a teardown it's pretty unclear.

They don't have to be branded for the console, they simply have to match the specs required to use it as it has been the case for most of their storage solutions.

I agree as far as availability, but unless you planned on upgrading at launch, i doubt the wait will be that long before the roll out.

I decide to stick middle finger to SOny for their s*** pricing.

I checked & COD CoD war is 59€ on blizzard store & xbox/xbox series X, & 79€ ($94) for PS5.
20€ or 33% more.

How do you guys justify this?

Update (April 28th, 2020): An earlier version of this article said the storage expansion process would require users to "replace the internal SSD with a larger drive". Sony has not clarified either way whether additional storage will be a replacement, or an addition, to the 825GB drive offered at launch. We'll continue to update this article with further clarifications when we hear more.

I guess this confusion is the downside of the silence strategy, unless it really is a replacement and they're just hoping people believe otherwise.

I NEVER said PS5 will overheat, I said PS5 will overheat (educated deduction) unless it has a specialized cooling solution. If it has & it works as good as they said, then good.

I think soon, people will accuse me of being Xbox fanboy, lol.

The fact that they made it so big should counter that. I hate when people complain about the size of these things... hopefully the people who built them made them big to keep the heat vented.

Nope. It's definitely an expansion/add-on to what is already in the system.
Go to 20:06 and keep listening.

That's has more to do with the developer and not Sony. I imagine ALL games are going to become more expensive the further we get into the next generation consoles.

I hope they make the optional SSD portable in the PS5 like XSX so we can just take it out and put it in others such as friends or families console to bring your games over.

Let’s hope when they offer ps branded memory, from a third party like Seagate, they don’t mark up the price....

You don't have to get them from Seagate or any popular brand. As long as the drive share the specifications that is needed to keep up with Sony’s SSD in the PS5, you are good to go. So you can get a generic version if you want.

Sony never said that yet though.

Gotcha, but I feel like average (or non-knowing people like grandparents) consumers will just go to a store or only and see the official PS logo stamped on the side of their official SSD and go with that no matter the price. Where an approved, third party or “generic” one may be overlooked because it doesn’t have that seal even though the packaging may have it on the list behind it.

Hopefully Sony clears things up soon...kinda disappointed they didn’t talk about it in their last showing, but who knows, maybe we’ll get another deep dive for accessories, be it in video or blog form.

Are there any SSDs as fast as the PS5 that you can buy now, or this year?

They have a teardown coming. Those generic versions are usually for those who are more savvy or prefer to window shop. Storages like this, though, Sony has always made locating them quite obvious. And like i said, they'll come in all different sizes, so you can base cost on what you feel is sufficient enough for your gameplay.

Not that I am aware of. You'll have to wait to the end of the year or early next. I'm sure they'll make it public as they've always done. It should have the specifications in the manual along with how to install it, though

"I never said it will overheat but I did unless..." lol They talked about the cooling back in June, this isn't a surprise and I would think anyone who thinks about games enough to bother posting on a forum like this especially as long as you have been would have already known that. It's just common sense even if you hadn't bothered to read up on it before bothering to comment, why would they design a console to run at a high speed and not make sure the cooling was in place for it?

I don't know why anyone would spend that much money on either one when an external HDD with 5TB of storage is only $110, yeah you swap games from drives here and there but saving that kind of money is worth the tradeoff IMO. Plus if you need to buy 2 of those xbox series x expansions or a larger internal SSD for PS5 you are basically spending as much as buying a new console so if worrying about wearing out the SSD is an issue just save your money and replace the console in a couple of years.
